blklabs, hello from Milwaukee. It depends on what you have. if the flowers hang from the stems it is burgmansia which will do fine in the house if you keep it close to dormant and do not try to force growth in winter. But quite frankly, I find them to be bug magnets indoors, so I do not keep them. Burgmansias are not hardy in Wisconsin. Then there is Datura, which is also called Angel Trumpet. This is usually treated as a tender annual here in Wisconsin. The flowers are usually white and face either up or point out to the side but do not hang as in Burgmansia. These I have never had to bring through the winter indoors. They do reseed in the garden for me...sometimes too well...LOL. These are my favorite of the two. The seed grown plants from the previous year usually bloom by late June and continue through the first hard frost. And the plants get very large (2.5 to 3 ft tall and about 3 to 4 ft across in one season). As far as toxicity is concerned, the Datura is a hallucinagen. It's seed pods are very large and has quite a lot of spikes on it...it kind of looks like a sea urchin. One year I was deadheading them barehanded and about an hour later I was having the usual hallucinagenic symptoms so I would suggest heavy gloves when handling the green seedpods. But all in all, a truly awesome garden plant...easy to grow and really beautiful. Hope this answers some questions about these plants. Dave Milwaukee

I recently moved into a new home, and transported a datura in the bed of my pickup truck to the new place. Our new place is only 1 mile from our old place, and the only bad thing that happened was that some of the leaves wrapped themselves around the stems of a hibiscus that was riding alongside it. These leaves are now curled up on themselves, and have turned black. Should I cut these leaves off, or will that stress the plant out too much? Also, how much pruning does a datura require?

Double daturas are available in the big commerical catalogs like T&M and Parks. They're expensive - about $4 for 10-15 seeds and much less germination (in my one time experience with this seed) than single dats you get in scads from everyone. I would suggest when speaking about mooonflowers be it morning glory family, daturas or brugs, to stick with the latin name. Otherwise you get an entirely different plant and it really causes newbies a lot of confusion. I was one to this forum last fall and it drove me nuts until I figured it out.
