Turkish Chile Peppers

Okay, So I've been trolling in these forums for a while, this is my first post though. Here is what I'm looking for....

I lived in Turkey for about a year and a half, and when I would order a kebap or just about anything in a restaraunt there they would serve it with a small side of these smallish yellow peppers when they were in season. I've searched high and low for the proper name of them. I've searched on the forums and though some look close nothing is exactly what I remember. they are the same ones that you will often find pickled on roadside stands in 2 liter bottles.

The best descriptive i can give is yellow/green at harvest ripening to a burgandy almost purple. 2.5-7.5cm/1-3inches in length slender. most resembling a tabasco in appearance and heat. I've asked the few friends I have remaining over there, and no one can give me a proper name other than aji biber, which translates literally to hot pepper. If anyone knows the info would be greatly appreciated, if you know where to get seed even better.

I've recently received some varieties from a friend in Brasil. Amongst them was a Turkish pepper; Aci Sivri.

I'm not sure if it's what you're looking for. The best description I've found is: An old Turkish variety can be mild to burning hot. Unusually productive for northern gardens, producing up to fifty 5-9 inch cayenne-shaped fruits per plant.

They would not be the Aci Sivri, which are red and 6-8 inches long, almost the same as Turkish Cayenne. What you describe might be Feferoni peppers. They are very popular in the Balkans an readily available pickled. Turkish cuisine is widespread throughout the region.

I got some seeds I could part out with. Hit me up if your interested in any of these. Bird's Eye Peppers about 20 seeds. harold59 same thing happened with my peppers only with jalapeno and serrano and the same hot. I have picked a short fat jalapeno and a longer bullet shaped serrano off the same branch. Some of the peppers get about the size of a nickel and turn red, they have a sweet tast when first bitten into then feel like a match head for about 20 minutes. Guy at works claims to eat Ghost peppers but admits my peppers make him sweat. I have a cayenne plant also they are a little hot but real bitter. I planted 3 Jalapenos directly in the ground but the serrano I had bought earlier and kept in a pot in the house when it got a pepper I put it outside close to the jalapenos and brought back inside at night after the jalapenos started blooming I planted the serrano about 5 feet away. the serrano only has serrano looking peppers on it, but they are dark green before turning red. in the spring i'm going to add a bell pepper.

A lot of those pepper are not any differen but just have different sounding names, like thai, korean, turkish, this and that. Case in point: "Aci Kirmizi" or "Aji Kirmizi" just means "RED CHILI" (Aci = Aji = chili, Kirmizi = red). Where did the Turks get their pepper from? Everything (in capsicum family) came out of the South America. @ Judo ... there are large communities of Armenians back in California. Do you have a relative over there ?

From what I read they can be used either way. Sort of like green bell peppers versus red. Perhaps the riper red ones are more mellow??

I am interested in peppers and pickles and have done some canning and also some growing. I recently found a produce farmer that also has pick your own at seasons end. He has many rows of peppers including Turkish cayenne and I also saw some yellow pepper bushes (loaded) that fit your description. I'm going back to pick more and am going to save seeds for next year. This year I grew serrano, habanero, hot and sweet banana and one plant of ghost. mekronmann@yahoo.com
