Anybody growing annual vines to cool the house?

What I'd really like to grow this summer is kudzu, for the root, the green manure, and the rapid development of shade for the roof, but I think the plant is enough of a problem in my area that I had better not risk it. It can spread by bird-carried seed, I assume, so there's no way to really contain it. (If I'm wrong, please tell me.)

What I have in hand are morning glory seeds, so they are nicked and soaking. Has anyone any experience with annual or deciduous vines that will grow up a trellis and across the roof without damaging a frame structure? and maybe produce other benefits such as fruit or...?

I'd like to be better prepared next summer so thought I'd get on the problem now.

Best,

Martha
