Yellow Habanero Fertilizer Question

I purchased a yellow hab from home depot on 12-31-05. I planted it into a pot on 1-7-06. It is VERY branched but very squatty. I have not fertilized it in any way as of yet. It's probably only 12 inches but it's starting to put out a lot of flowers. There are more than 20 buds developing but atleast 4 or 5 open already.

With that being said:

Do I fert with growth booster so that it's bigger than 12 inches?

Do I fert with a bloom booster so that I have quality fruit?

I have a liquid organic fertilizer that will mostly be applied to the roots but i will put a little into a bottle for folier feeding.

Any suggestions?

they sell *the* yellow hab at HD? or is it the orange one? The orange one is the generic hab, the yellow one is insanely hot and very rare.

I live right near you, i will make a trip tomorrow if its the yellow.

it's worth a shot. It was the HD on 41 and six mile cypress. It was very clearly labeled YELLOW (but NO name). Of course it was out in the garden center...with all the other little starters. They had a good 20 of them atleast but that was also on 12-31. So if I'm pretty new to this pepper thing...am I getting in over my head with the "insanely Hot and very rare" yellow hab? And what do i fert with? this little guy needs some assistance. it's little but trying to fruit so bad!

Yes, may is planting time ;-) What do I have growing...hmmm... I started at the very end of Jan or 1st of Feb some geraniums and crazy daisys, ornamental peppers, dalhias and zinnias. I should not have started the zinnias or dalhias, just got too excited! But, the other three are all very very slow growing! They need to be started around then. I put them under shop lights, so they are all doing ok, surprisingly even the zinnias and dalhias. Out of three full seed trays (72 plants each) I have only lost 5 plants. I have since then, about a week ago started a flat of various types of rudbekia. One is Prarie Sun, beautiful yellow flower with a green centre. Another is a type of double, and I also planted a type that has these beautiful oversized flowers and rusty centres. Two of the three varieties are short lived perennials. This last weekend, I have started marigolds and coleus. I also planted a really neat type of coneflower. it has petals on top of the centre cone. I put those in the fridge though and they will stay there for four weeks to stratify, so they won`t come out until April. I am hoping that by April, I can move them out to a cold frame. Now I have learned about it, I am planning on winter sowing a whole bunch of other seeds. I just got a stand off freecycle. I am thinking of trying some extra coneflower and crazy daisy and rudbekia seeds. (I just can`t get enough of those plants, although many likely won`t flower until next year. I have some purple basil, and forget me nots, and a burgandy blanket flower that I am also thinking about winter sowing, or starting in the cold frame. I also have some green envy Zinnias that will be directly sown in the spring. I have probably spent over a $100.00 so far on seed. I am not sure if I spent it wisely, but I have a lot of varieties that are not the common ones, and cost a little bit more. I figure though, I will get about 500 plants out of it by the end, so, by the time you add up the cost of the other supplies to grow them, perhaps it will work out to 75 cents a plant. Even if some don`t bloom until next year, that is still a pretty good value considering they can cost $7-14 at a nursery! I am really interested in seeing how the winter sowing thing goes. It will open up the door wide on what I can start next year. There is only so much you can grow in the house! So, what are you planning on growing...

Noodling around on the internet I happened upon a peppers download from the Univ of Calif. It had an apricot pepper jelly recipe that is very similar to the big batch but using powdered pectin. It has more apricots, more vinegar and less sugar. No onions but I could sub some for some of the bell peppers. I would finely dice the veggies rather than put them in the blender. APRICOT PEPPER JELLY Makes 6 half-pint (250-ml) jars. 1 1Ã¢ÂÂ4 cups dried apricot halves, finely slivered 300 ml 1 cup red or green bell pepper strips 250 ml (about 1 medium-size pepper) 1Ã¢ÂÂ3 cup chopped jalapeno or other hot 75 ml pepper, stems and seeds removed 2 cups cider vinegar (5%) 500 ml 4 cups sugar 1 L 1 package powdered fruit pectin 1 package 1Ã¢ÂÂ2 tsp butter or margarine 2 ml 5 drops red or green food coloring 5 drops (depending on the type of pepper used) 1. Cover dried apricots with boiling water. Leave for approximately 10 minutes. Drain. 2. Combine bell pepper strips, chopped hot peppers, drained apricots, and 1Ã¢ÂÂ2 cup (125 ml) vinegar in a food processor or blender. Process until partially ground with small chunks remaining. Pour into a saucepan. 3. Mix 1Ã¢ÂÂ4 cup (63 ml) sugar with pectin. Stir into fruit mixture. Add butter and food coloring. 4. Bring to a boil quickly, stirring constantly. Immediately stir in remaining sugar. 5. Bring to a full boil, stirring, and boil hard for 1 minute. Remove from heat. 6. Skim foam off the top. Then ladle jelly into hot half-pint jars, leaving 1Ã¢ÂÂ4 inch (0.5 cm) of headspace. 7. Wipe jar rims with a clean, damp cloth. Walter; I am growing bell peppers in a small ebb n flo in my office window. during vegative growth, I generally keep the EC at around 2.0-2.4 which (according to the stick) is approximately 1500-1700, so your 1100 sounds a bit low to me. I started my plants approx august 20. I have one that is very leggy, the other is short and stout. the latter is about 8" tall and has 6 fruits. the largest fruit being about 1.5" between flower and stem. I am currently clipping flowers to limit quantity and focus on size. the leggy one only just recently started to flower, and I haven't seen any fruit set yet. I generally keep my EC as stated above w/ pH of 5.8-6.0. I use general hydronics per their label, except in flowering I'll increase the micro a bit and / or lessen the grow. My experience with these plants and the ones I've grown in the yard is they are not very large plants, so I would expect 8" to 1 foot to be about max height, especially since you're using artificial light. Greystoke; I'm working on just such a system now. I'm thinking two tanks. the one at the bottom catches system runoff, the system at the top is a gravity feed reservoir. you just have to dump the bottom tank into the top tank each day.(muscle versus electricity, has to be some kind of power input) this system will also require some kind of check valve to keep the ebb n flo starting and stopping throughout the day. I haven't got the valve part fully worked out yet, but when I do I'll let you know. I believe it will somehow incorporate the smartvalve walter mentioned in his post though. 1100ppm with only 400w? holy cow. No wonder your stuff wont flower. I've never needed more than 800ppm and I use twice as much light. Strange that you mix product lines like that. The plant sets flowers as soon as it reaches sexual maturity. For a capsicum, that is the time where the single main stem branches into two stems. It will set at least one flower in the crotch of those two stems, called the crown flower. It will set at least one flower every node past that. Aborting a flower is different from not throwing a flower in the first place at all. Back off on the nutes and see how it does. My guess is it will flower like mad once all that nitrogen is out of its system. I'm a minimalist, though. I dont subscribe to the theory of feeding it until it burps then backing off. Consider switching to the Pure Blend Pro. Peppers aren't as sensitive as tomatoes to C deficiency so you may not even need the Cal-Mag Plus (although I use it anyway, mostly for the Mg)

leave it in the pot for about a week, then you can transplant it into the ground or into a 3-5 gal pot.

i wouldn't worry about fertilizers too much though, too much N and it wont set fruit.

to date, experimenting with fertilizers has killed more plants than anything else.

thanks a bunch sndk. I guess i'll leave it well enough alone. is a light feeding of 6-10-10 discouraged? I just couldn't fathom putting a plant in a pot and not giving it any food. thanks for all your advice.

the soil is full of nutrients as long as it isnt white sugar sand, and even that has some nutrients.

the problem most people have is not undernourished plants, but the opposite.

i got a kick out of seeing one of my guerilla grows that had no help from me whatsoever doing better than some of the ones i was feeding hehe :)

I grow in hydroponics and, when I started, used the tables for recommended fertilizer concentration.

In hydro, fertilizer is measured daily with a meter so I have pretty good records for many years.

Published recommended fertilizer levels are 3-5 times higher than a chile requires......

Consider that the person recommending the high fertilizer concentration makes and sells the fertilizer....

Better to do nothing than over-fertilize.

hmmm...good points guys. :-) I never thought of that! I'm using the recomended doses of someone whoes trying to sell me a product not a fellow garden buddy! I guess i'll just keep a close eye.

The way I usually fertilize all my habs is to transplant into the pot size I am going to use all season (since you are in Fl. you will probably have the plant through multiple seasons, maybe use a 14" pot or 16"?)

Anyway, transplant before it sets any fruit. I usually wait about 3-4 weeks after transplant and then hit the plant with fish emulsion/seaweed extract mix, half the recommended strength. I will also foliar feed with the same matrix. Two weeks later I will do a light foliar feed with some epsom salts. I would do the half strength seaweed/fish fert about once every month, and foliar feed once in a while too. It's true that too much N will stunt your blooms and make a big leafy plant, but you should have some nitrogen. Generally a 5-10-10 or somewhere in that ballpark is good, 10-15-10 is alright, where 20-2-2 or something would be a no-no. Also, I recommend the seaweed/fish because there alot of micronutrients in the matrix, sort of like a multivitamin for plants. I had really good results with that mix and fertilizing scheme.
