Yard Pics - for Mike and Brian in Chitown and others...

Mike and Brian, and anyone else interested, here are the current palms I have in my home's yard that I purchased back in December. I have a lot of palms in the yard so I've left many out since they're redundant. Some actually have got to go, WAY too much maintenance...never thought I'd be saying that before I moved here from the Chicago area. To think last year at this time I had 10 fully mature roebies in my garage while outside it was -7F. How are those doing by the way Brian?

Lovely palms you have there....how old is the CIDP approx? I like the way they grow at first being short and stubby with the large crown, reminds me of holiday time again....mine has a VERY long way to go yet!!

Where they were a few singles already seeded the same size but not all. When I go anywhere im all about bring back Big palms. A large butia and large bismarki also brian actually does too. David the trunks are about 6ft each when do they usually start seeding? Also

Thanks for remembering Brian. They were recovering from the cold nicely and then last week slow down with no weather change. It turns out I made two blunders with them. 1) I planted out too early, March 23, and 2) I didn't give them enough water. Next year, most likely I will plant out around April 7. I only gave them half a gallon of a water a week where before I used to give them 2/3 gallon every 4 days. My water meter told me it was moist. I finally just used my gut feeling and stuck my finger in the dirt which turned out to be dry. So I am now mulching and putting them on 2/3 gallon every 4 day regimen again. Hopefully, I didn't do any permanent damage. Frustrated with myself and seeing your nice 5 gallon buckets, I decided to create my own. I don't have a reciprocating saw so my wife was laughing her butt off at me trying to cut a big hole using small drill and then "connecting the dots" :-(. I found a 3 inch Atrium Grate which turns out to fit the bucket nicely and also stayed put all by itself. It's sturdy and has a place for the top bucket to "rest". Here's a picture and also one of the retaining wall which my wife took. I was too ashamed to take the picture. lol. Tammsf: Nice cages ;-). I am in the same boat as you are. I am inland so nights are colder than Raybo or bdobs.

Thanks for all the compliments...I will make sure the guys see this! I am pretty sure this is Mike's first 'dig'! But he really did a great job! Here are the fish that he had in the 100 gallon (how they lived 2 years in there, I can't understand!!) They will LOVE their new digs!

Hey all! The little tree frog just loves my mini pond. Can you spot him? Today, he was funny. I placed him on the land while I did a water change. I noticed a red lady bug on one of the plants in the pond. He was tilting his head and then splash, he jumped into the water but also had ate the lady bug! LOL! At least I know he's well fed for now. Mike, that worm is ick ick ewwwwwwwy lol too much like a tape worm. A good way to get a girl to run away, haha. Zoom zoom. If it were an earth worm, no problem I often help them when they get stranded on pavement. Yeah so going to be so cold tonight ~40F, I'll place some light blankets over some plants and probably bring in a few too. Ugg hate the change of seasons. I've seem some maple trees that have start turning orange and yellow, at least they are pretty. Brian your Var Calamondin is beyond gorgeous. My brother had one and I loved the pattern and size of the leaves, it got too dry and died. All this drink and bbq talk makes me want pulled pork or sticky ribs, and a tropical drink. I have some mango juice to finish, and some mango rum to add to it, maybe later when I watch TV. Sunshine, wow you are so talented! I love your drawings, especially the fish, he's so darn cute :)

Wine - I'd be happy to post more pics but will have to wait til the weekend since I get home from work after dark to take more shots.

Greenclaw - Not sure on the age, it was here when I moved in a few months ago. Maybe 8 years old, but that's a wild guess (same age as the home).

Mike - I want to get rid of nearly all the queens (maybe keep 1 or 2), and get royals, roebies, foxtails, majesties, and coconuts. All those except the coconut are rather common in my area...still doesn't prevent any 1986 freeze from reoccuring though.

That CIDP is a very nice palm! It looks very healthy. I know you don't like your Queens but they are very nice...really good trunks. I hope you are keeping the two in the picture. If you keep them well fed they will stay really green and full. If you plant Coconuts around them they blend really well. I have several among my coconuts and they just flow. Does your HOA care what you do in your backyard? If not, given all the space it looks like you have, I would jungle up. My goal is to get rid of most of my grass in my back yard. I am working on completing my canopy on one side and have started building out my understory. My ultimate goal is to have a tropical garden with trails and hidden garden grotto's. Of course my DW thinks I am insane and just creating a yard that no-one but another palm nut like me would want.

Paul, Very NICE! I wish i was able to plant that around here. to much maintenace LOL I wish i had that problem. All you need now is a nice in-ground pool and you will be all set :)

Thanks Brian. The pool is actually already there, just too cool to use right now with water temp floating around 70. I have a potted coconut and bottle palm in the pool area, and several planted crotons. Makes for a nice tropical theme.

Well let me rephrase that All you need now is a heater for the pool and you will be all set! LOL :) How big is your bottle palm? That is one of my favorite! I was looking around for one.......i am thinknig about getting one with maybe a foot or two of trunk but they are so expensive.....then of course it would be even more for me because i would have to have it shipped.

Royalpaulm. I envy you. Now if I only had a way to get down to Florida to pick up those queens when you get rid of them. LOL! Everything looks great and I'm sure it will look even better when your finished.

My bottle palm is maybe 4 feet overall, it was $24 at Lowe's in January. There is a nursery by my house growing huge bottles, about 9-10 feet overall. Be it expensive, they look awesome with their enormously fat trunk.

Thanks for the comments Jay. I may just keep all the Queens afterall, I found a company that will maintain them for next to nothing once they grow beyond my trimmer's reach. While I may change my mind again next week, it's probably best to just keep them as they are gigantic and very pricey to swap.
