Pic closely resembles California Privet or Ligustrum ovalifolium, a Japanese native. Does it have opposite leaves? In my area European Privet or L. vulgare has become a serious problem. The "one" potted plant I bought around 10 years ago stated "RARE" white voilet... it's not rare in my garden now....it took a good 8 years for it to grab hold and take control and now it's OUTTA CONTROL... and I CAN'T SEEM TO STOP IT....it's like an alien taking over my garden....I pull it out...it reappears..... @zzackey I don't think the stem is square, but I'll check. I'll also try crushing a leaf. @fatamorgana2121 I was kind of going by both definitions of "herb". It's certainly herbaceous, and I was wondering if anyone knows if this is an herb in the useful sense. ~Milton
