bookjunky, you really are sweet. When I was your age, I was living in an apartment trying to grow hot pepper on windowsills. I used to use shop lights to grow seeds and rose cuttings in the basement for a couple winters. After seeing my electric bill go up more than $10 a month I didn't think it was worth it. It was cheaper to buy plants from the nursery then. My neighbor who used to work at the conservatory grew seeds under fluorescence light for many, many years. The seedlings were wonderful. I would hate to see his electric bill, though. Karen, Becky, tiffy, we are going to celebrate our 53 bd at the same time? Wonderful. :-D

I've been trying to think of decent ones - for a while there I had a deal that every time I renewed my newspaper subscription, I got a free magazine subscription, and I always picked gardening mags. But none of them really were worth actually paying for. Sunset was the last one, but once again, it really didn't fit with anything I'd actually do - But maybe it's just me, but I've steadily cut down on the number of mags / papers I subscribe to, and I'm now down to a couple of local and regional newspapers, no magazines left - I realized I hadn't tried a single recipe in about 5 years from the cooking mags, and I wasn't likely to go to any of the restaurants they reviewed, palm trees don't grow here and I really don't want a whole garden full of potted cactus, and so on. Now, I just spend way too much time on the internet:-).

Notice I ordered for gifts...not for me! Y'all are my "Cooking Light! I got the magazine for a lot of years....but it got to much spa and beauty...so I dropped it. But my DIL loves it....and maybe my daughter would too... For $5 it's cheaper than buying her a margarita at lunch!! Linda C

One word of warning from someone who was burned twice by these companies who offer magazine subscriptions at deal prices. Only order one year. I paid for two subscriptions for two years, the companies I ordered them from paid the magazine for only one year. After fighting for months to get the two different companies to either pay the rest of the subscription or give me back my money, I've given up.
