Some pics and questions...

Just returned from a trip to SWFlorida and Mexico. Clouds,occasionally...temps,mid 80s entire time...sunburn, in place...liver, angry.

Mother-in-law's date palm. Latest offer from landscaper is $2,500 I believe.

Seeds collected from underneath. First, do they look viable? And if so, what is the best way to germinate them?

Dusk over Cape Coral, Fl.

Found this seedling under prior pic. No easy task digging it out without ending up bareroot. MIL will bring up in June if it takes.

Took a cutting from this guy. We'll see.

Cutting taken from this Ponderosa lemon as well.

Asked about this one last year. I planted it Christmas Day of 2007. It is growing very slowly, but seems to have sped up some since I last saw it. My MIL uses a 7-3-7 fert on it, and just allows for the irrigation system and any rain for watering. Maybe I'm just impatient, but I thought it would've been much larger by now.

Finally, just a couple of pics taken from her yard.

Another lousy day in the subtropics. "Royals, arecas, and queens, oh my." Just wish she had a boat...any kind of boat.

Night, dead calm, stars, palms, and warmth. Always a nice visit.

Nice pics! Im not sure why your coconut palm isnt growing faster, but it looks like its growing normally so I wouldnt worry. It just needs a good summer for growth (never a problem in FL) and a mild winter.
All the palms look really nice! I love FL!

I agree, nice pics, would love to live down there. The coconut doesn't look the healthiest, I do see some exposed roots, and I know Florida's been having some colder than normal winters, so maybe that's the reason?? If it continues to not perform, maybe rip it out and replace it with a majesty for a similar very tropical look.

Regarding the statement: "RMV is not contagious. It comes from the understock and will not affect companion bushes". The same poster posted essentially the same "information" in the following thread: http://forums2.gardenweb.com/forums/load/roses/msg1011234613097.html Since the poster is from Georgia, he/she may be interested in seeing what the University of Georgia has recently posted (April 2009) concerning rose virus spread: "Removing severely infected plants may be the only solution. Preventive measures to prohibit the spread of viruses include disinfecting pruning shears when moving from one plant to another, and a good insect control program is a must. Also, buy plants that are apparently healthy and exhibit no peculiar foliar symptoms (Figure 13, page 14)." Here is a link that might be useful: earlier thread concerning viruses of roses

If it has been outside all this time, I would probably allow the leaves to fall off naturally, allowing it to go dormant. Then I'd place it in an unheated garage where it will remain dormant until next spring, watering only once a month or so, just to keep it from completely drying out.

Thanks, everybody! Marg, I don't think it's squirrels, kinda high for them. Rita, unfortunately I found several more buds like this in different areas. Also when I went outside at about 2 to look at this bud a cicada flew out of there, not from the bud, but somewhere in that area. Do they eat buds? Nancy, I thought maybe JBs too.. I don't know.. Right now as they are done with the roses they started on their grapes. Mantis, thanks!! That's probably it, heat and lack of rain. But not all flowers are getting smaller, these two especially. Kay, I think you are probably right. I was liveheading and saw a big green grasshopper on one flower and after I snapped that flower the bud right near it had the same kind of hole. That grasshopper was different from any I saw before (there are a lot here), it had it wings in the form of a blade, kind of. I returned to spray it, and it was still sitting on a daylily. Jumped away and the spray only got on DL leaves. Thanks, Nate. It is painful, my DH can't even do anything with this hand, it's all swollen and it hurts. Hi Natalie4b :)

Hi!! I think we will try to heat it up a little to make sure it sticks. We did use the rolling pin as well. I wonder if we should rent a roller?? For cleaning, we actually used our carpet shampooer set on the hard floor option. Our slab had tons of construction debris and joint compound and this REALLY helped. We just used warm water in it. Then I mopped it with my Mr. Clean. We bought the Henry brand hole filler from Lowe's - it's the same brand as the latex tile primer and is right next to it on the shelf in the back. It took a couple of nights to prep the floor and then it only took about an hour and a half or so to put it all down. Like other things, the prep work is what took so long! But if you were putting it down over existing flooring, it'd be a lot easier!! We brought the gunstock color home, but it didn't look as real to me as the golden oak. It was very pretty, but a little too dark for our house. We have dark furniture so this looks better here~

Thanks for the slide show. The seeds look healthy and viable. Its been a hard year in s. fl for coconut palms.

The date palm looks really awesome with a little change of picture settings! You can really see the spines on the base of the fronds (or are those flowers?)
