Given that we have seen 2 "Storms Of The Century" in back to back years it's nice to know our product is Hurricane Tested-Mother Nature Approved :)

At ACE Hardware a 3' x 24' roll of burlaps costs $13. That is only $1.65 per yard. Do not use the plastic. It will kill your plants. It will create a greenhouse and cook them. It will keep rain of them and dry them out. What you need is shade from winter sun when the ground is frozen and protection from the winter winds when the ground is frozen. Burlap can do this without any plastic. Leave the tops open. Do not cover the plants. Just put up wind breaks and shade, but do not cover. When I was first planting our landscaping, I put in larger plants in the front and I never protected anything on the front of our home which is the south. But in back on the north, I would put in very young plants and would protect them the first year with 2' x 8' pieces of plywood that I had lying around. I would put up stakes and fasten the plywood so that it acted like a 2' high fence on the south side of the new plantings. I don't know if I needed it, but it worked. If these are small greenhouse plants they will need more protection. If they are larger field grown plants they should be OK if they are appropriate to your area. The idea is to buy plants that are hardy for the areas where they will be planted. There are plants that are hardy for Minnesota, so your cold NC is a walk in the park for those plants. Evergreen azaleas typically take 3 years from when they were removed from the greenhouse to develop their full hardiness. Some rhododendrons are very hardy and most deciduous azaleas are very hardy.

Plant Or Relocate Trees And Shrubs: The fall is the best time to get new trees into the ground, or move those you have earmarked to be relocated. The best strategy is to choose trees that are hardy for your zone, as it makes their survival more likely and maintenance easier. Also, choosing evergreens and shrubs that produce berries in the winter months can make your garden more interesting and provide activity for birds and other wildlife. Protect Your Trees: For new or young trees this is an important step you'll not want to forget in winterizing your garden. Covering trees and shrubs with burlap is most important in areas that have exposure to northwest winds and high sun. Be sure, however, not to do this too early in the season, in order to prevent rot. It is also a good idea to give your evergreens plenty of water to prevent burnout. Test Soil And Mulch: After the ground freezes be sure to add mulch to your perennial garden. This will protect both your soil and plants through the long winter months, as well as provide much needed nutrients for spring. This is also a good time to test the pH of your soil to see if it is lacking any essential minerals for the next growing season. Plant Spring Bulbs: This is also the time of year to get your spring bulbs into the ground. Be sure that you do this before the first frost, and give them plenty of water when planting them. Warm temps here in Ohio, could get up to 65 today and even 70 tomorrow. Regardless, I put down my leaf mulch yesterday. Normally one waits until the ground is at least frozen a little. It was a nice day and rain was expected over night so I did it, trying to keep the mulch away from the base of the perennials - which are still green! And I swear I passed an eye clinic that had beautiful green lawns that looked as though someone had mowed recently.

Hi Teeka, I read your OP about the problem with your Serbian Spruce. I also read the advice that the other posters gave. I would pretty much ignore that. What I would do is return the tree and get a refund. Has anyone here ever noticed how if something is repeated again & again there will be someone who believes it? Like DT and his "birther" nonsense. There is one poster here who is fond of linking that ̶W̶a̶s̶i̶l̶l̶a Puyallup site. That infatuation reminds me of Dr Sheldon Cooper and Batman LOL. Only one small problem, the so-called researcher's grad students, colleagues and provost want to give her the ole "heave ho". It seems that they have some expectation that research on the university level should be peer reviewed, what nerve! Besides that, who links an obscure, extension site on an international forum? Myopic much? In my case I rarely if ever respond to a PNW or West Coast post, I don't have anything to contribute. When I read heavy soil is preferred to keep the rootball intact I am simply baffled. Around here the tree's root system keeps the ball intact. Here is a typical field grower in Maryland.The soil is sandy loam. It is no coincidence that our Delmarva has such a concentration of growers with their light, stone-free soil. It drains quickly so the equipment can go back to the field the next day after a rain, unlike clay. I will never forget a trip with the SNA to Hawkersmith Nursery in TN, the soil was just like the seashore. Like the OP I am in zone 7, in my case NE Maryland. It has been stifling here and the forcast for tomorrow is 95°, school districts lacking ac have been closed for two days. And what am I gonna be doing tomorrow? Along with several other vendors, selling plants @ Green Spring Gardens in Annandale. I promise you NOONE is recommending plants be barerooted, no way - no how. If a commodity is defective the liability is not on the consumer. If I buy jeans and the zipper is defective I take them back. Why would trees be any different. This goofy notion that the consumer should "correct" a defect in the product only rewards the seller and perpetuates the problem.

The 1st 2 pictures are 8-9 footers measured from base to top frond. We are selling them for $799.00.
That includes:
*Installation with initial mulching and spraying
*1st Winterizing (Wrapping, spraying, mulching)
* 1-year warranty

We will offer a winterizing service for $120.00 for the 1st palm and $30.00 for each palm thereafter. If a customer chooses to continue with the winterizing service then the warranty will also be extended as well.

We feel that once the root system has regenerated and established the Fortunei-given their age and size will only need mulching and spraying.

Hey Jim!

I've seen the pictures from the nurseries at Coldplant.com. I ordered seeds from them about a month ago and they still haven't arrived. The pictures on their website are nothing short of amazing. The shear size of their nurseries and stock is mind boggling. As I'm sure you are already aware, we can not import plants from outside the USA so that relegates me only to buying seeds from them which are exempt from that import law. I question if the palms would be able to survive the journey anyway. My babies are made in the good old USA...while that makes me happy to say that, the reality is, I have no other choice.

We cant import plants? Nobody told me or anyone on ebay.

Those are very nice trachies. I doubt I would pay that for one unless I won the lottery.

Hey Chadec...

Don't know what sellers on eBay get away with but I can tell you my Son was sold a pair of replica Nikes that the seller claimed were real. Ebay/PayPal was very good in returning our money but they would have never known had we not filed a complaint. That said, I'm sure most sellers are on the level. The US Dept. of Agriculture has strict policies on allowing foreign Flora into the US for 2 main reasons...1. they maybe carrying or harboring a destructive insect species and 2. The Plant species may be considered evasive. I would love you to show me a link to a seller outside the US that is actually selling via mail into the US.
As for my pricing, it is what it is, and I totally understand that the price may seem high if you don't live in the metro NY area. When you factor in the size, the warranty, delivery, installation and winterization-it really is a good deal. My Fortunei's are over 15 years old...it takes a long time to get them that big.
My customers aren't palm enthusiasts who take pride in raising a palm from seed or seedling-like most of the fine people on this site...they want a big showy palm that is big enough and hardy enough to live and add noticeable tropical look to their landscaping. Nothing wrong with that, it just ain't cheap :)

I understand its not a bad price for ppl who are not into palm. As far as regulation on plants, I know that some are protected and will be seized at the border. Otherwise having a phyto should get you by, no?

I have only ever ordered agaves and cacti from over sea. Dont think a palm would fare too well. Probably would go into shock and die.

I think the prices are definitely reasonable since there will definitely be people willing to buy them at that price. I personally wouldn't be able to pay that price for one palm, but I'm glad that there will be some nice trachys available in the NYC metro!
I once saw a 3 gallon trachy (it was a triple trunk, but very small) for sale at $119 dollars at a local nursery. I don't think it ever sold because of the price, but you're palms are definitely a bargin compared to that and the fact that delivery is included will help it sell.
