How often do you water with no rain?

I am trying to find a happy medium without killing my plants from thirst.

Last year I did every 2 days if there was no rain.

This year, during the couple of weeks where we had 1 or more inches of rain, I did not water at all.

Duriong weeks with no rain (like now) I am doing twice per week, and watering deeply (Wed and Saturday). This takes a LONG time even for my smallish garden (3 hours each time).

I killed some squash seedlings. They popped up and died. I stuck my finger in the dirt and realized it was bone dry after 2 days with no rain (raised beds).

So, How often do you water? Do you adjust this for raised beds/container plants/ in-ground plants?

I've been ignoring my in-ground trees that are 1-2 years old because the hose won't reach, but if we don't get rain soon I think I will need to haul some watering cans to them.
