Getting rid of grasshoppers in a large garden
Comments (4)I have found grasshopper spore, Nosema locustae to be an effective, long-lasting (years) solution to grasshoppers. The material comes in flakes that are spread lightly around the property. The grasshoppers eat the flakes, become sick, and either die or are eaten by other grasshoppers, helping to further spread the disease. The spore is not very expensive, and easy to apply. The amount in even the smallest of the containers you buy may be sufficient to not only treat your garden, but also adjacent areas. I spread this material about 14 years ago on our property (a number of acres), and have not had grasshopper problems since. The spores seem to have a long-term persistence in the garden ecosystem. Comments (7)Having both ducks and chickens on my current property I would emphatically recommend you keep both out of the growing garden. A fence is essential. You asked about grasshoppers. No problem. Both ducks and chickens are grasshopper eating machines. The chickens like to stalk the long grass at the edge of our lawn and flush the grasshoppers. As a side benefit, we have not seen a tick since we got our hens. Ducks LOVE slugs and grubs. This actually creates a slight problem when it is raining and the ducks are drilling for gubs and tearing up the lawn. But few slugs make it to the garden. Final point early spring and late fall when garden is not growing is a great time to fence the fowl in the garden space (along with the goats). The clean up and fertilize with no damage. And consider the eggs and the joy of watching them as extra benefits. I can't imagine why anyone would not have them if they have some land....See Moregrasshopper control where pesticides can't be used
Comments (2)Maywren, if there are too many for you to handle with picking, stomping, and the damage is significant, try nolo bait. It is a biological control specific for grasshoppers. It is expensive, takes about a week to start working, and works better for younger ones. There are other brands also, but I believe you can only get it from mailorder. Good luck! Comments (2)Hello Margie, I just stumbled on this site and saw your posting about grasshoppers. Have you tried making a "tobacco tea" and spraying your plants? Most insects hate tobacco. I buy a pouch of tobacco and place in a large pot full of water. Bring almost to a boil and strain. Put the "tea" in a spray bottle and spray plants as needed. I usually put the tobacco in an old sock and let it steep like a tea bag. Instead of a spray bottle, you can also use a sprayer on the end of your water hose, but if you do, you will need to make the "tea" extra strong. I hope you find it helpful.
