Early Sunglow corn

I planted Early Sunglow corn on 5-14. The spot where I planted was lawn in the AM and corn patch in the PM, then we got a fast 2+ inch rain that night. The only amendment added to the soil was a few shredded leaves.

The problem that my corn is already tesseling and it is only about knee high. The ground I planted in is very, very tight heavy clay. The corn was side dressed and mulched with leaves. I have never grown Early Sunglow on this land, but it seems that all the Sunglow I have planted in the past was talled than this before tasseling, but I have always had much better soil in the past.

I know Sunglow is short, but is it common for it to be this short? The stalks look strong and healthy.

Any ideas?

Larry
