Planting Corn

I am going to be planting Silver Queen and Early Sunglow corn this year. I am using raised beds with lasagna style. I will have quite a bit of mushroom compost though.

I had planned on using one box for my corn. Eight silver queen and 8 early sunglow. After reading about corn and pollination should I keep these two types far apart?

dapper, from the mature dates on both, I wouldn't think there would be a problem. The sunglo is around 64 days and about a month later for silver queen. Wouldn't think they would tassle at the same time.

I agree with Shot. You can plant corn varieties together as long as they have at least two weeks' difference in maturity dates.

You can probably plant the Early Sunglows at one foot apart, maybe even closer if you keep them well-watered and fertilized -- they grow only 4-6 feet tall. The Silver Queens are 8-10 feet tall and require more root-space.

Once you get it going, definitely learn what it looks like when going to seed and leave it alone -- last winter I had it in half my beds, this winter I ended up with one whole 4foot by 25 foot bed of it (all self planted) and we've been eating salads every day the snow is off. However, I don't see much reason to plant it now, as it's no good in warm weather. Maybe plant now so that it goes to seed and gives you a bed of it for next winter? runswithscissors -- keep trying. Maybe buy some different seed (there are two kinds -- get the most cold hardy kind for your area). It'll be worth it. Maybe try planting in the fall -- I normally plant it in September or October.

digdirt blood meal will not corn where you get this fantasy since it not that strong or fast acting That makes no sense. If what you were trying to say in your usual rude manner is that blood meal burning corn is a fantasy then you are simply wrong. It can and it does if used too heavily on young plants. Works fine on well established plants but should be used with care on young plants such as these. There are many articles about this aspect of blood meal available from reputable sources on the web. There are also several past discussions about it happening on the Organic Gardening forum. And I have personal experience with it. Been there, done that, had the burned corn to prove it. Dave

I do. I saw "Janet Craig" growing outdoors here in Hayward, SF bay area,and it was a big plant growing under the eaves of an apartment. Hit the roof,and was growing forward to the light on a bushy plant.

SQueen is taller than the ESGlow so plant the ESunG on the south end of the bed so it won't be shaded out by the SQueen.

What are you worried about? Both are plain "SU" types so the only thing that could happen if they would happen to cross is a few yellow kernels on some white Silver Queen ears. And I agree with other comments but if you are concerned you can also just remove the Early Sunglow tassels as soon as the first Early Sunglow silks start to darken. But their maturity dates are closer to 3 weeks apart so you really won't even have to anything. Just enjoy.
