I can only tell you what I am paying. I live in Palm Beach County and I am buying three more for my yard and the installed price is roughly $150/ft of wood. I am getting all 6' of wood. If those are Jamaicans they'll grow really fast if you keep them fed. I have Maypans that went in (2004) at that size and they all have about 13-16' of wood. They'd be taller if it was not for the three hurricanes that ravaged them.

If you have the proper proper climate Coconut will grow very fast. So why pay for a large one??
Second without the prper climate you will eventually lose it no matter what you do.
765 seems like an expensive rental to me. Why not spend that money on something more appropriate??

I'm no expert but there is a nursery up here in the Detroit area (yes the deteroit area)that sell coconut palms close to that size (i'm not that hard core) and they get about $800.00. I would think they should be less expensive down there.

I'm in P. Beach county and out of curiosity checked the prices of Coconuts . 129.95/9.95 The highest had about 3 feet of trunk. Not sure about the variety.

Hey Gary, where did you see them for 129 for 3' of trunk? If they look like the ones in the picture above, I am definetly interested at that price. I am in the Wellington area.

Thanks everyone for the help- this is great to know. Do the pictures above look like Jamaican yellows? I thought they looked more like green malayan dwarfs, but I'm far from an expert. $129 for 3ft of trunk would be a steal!

IMO, $765 for those palms is high. Around here (Pinellas) those palms would be less than half that price. Even when Lowes gets those size Coconuts in, they are usually $299 (at least they were last year).

Its tough to tell from the pics, but if I had to guess on the variety I would agree with you in that they are green malayans. If you have a choice, Id try and find some Maypans. They are far more impressive to my eyes.

Do you need tall trees right off the bat? Coconuts are easy to grow from seedlings and grow pretty fast in the right conditions.

I would agree with kekoa .Why plant a large one when they grow very rapidly ,much easier to transplant. Given good conditions will mature well under 10 years .
Except for the disease problems about all they really need is heat. I removed mine because I'm on a small lot they are messy and real space hogs.
Would definitely wait until warm weather is certain.
If I really wanted one in a marginal area I'd wait until May plant a seedling which will give it time to establish before winter returns. The most you could lose is 9.95 lol Good luck with whatever you decide gary

An average wholesale price from a place that will load them in your truck is $10 to $15 per foot of over all height, making those $140 to $210. Some people charge for grey wood and that is around $80 per foot of GW. Those looks like about 2 1/2 to 3 feet of GW, making them wholesale at $240 at the most. If you double the price and add an extra $150 for installation labor, that is still cheaper than the price you have been quoted. I will bet you can find a cheaper place, but you would still have to look around, where these people have it right there. You should be able to shave off at least $200 from that if it is worth taking the time to look around more.

They look ripped out of the ground with no protection of the rootball. Seems likely they will need more time to re-establish if not planted soon.
wooo,a bare rootball like that in hot dry California sun would make those great plants a fire sale in no time.

I think the general consensus is the palm is overpriced, and I tend to now agree. Thank you for all the information from everyone, I cannot tell you how much I appreciate. I think my most affordable bet for this experimental palm in Central Fla is to drive down to the Palm Beaches' HD, Lowes, etc. and pick one of these suckers up. Even for $3.10 gallon, still much more affordable than scenario A above.

To the Florida posters: Are the coconut palms in South Florida for $200-300 at lowes, hd, etc. really about the same size as above? Do others in this state know of any stores closer to Orlando with these size coconuts currently in stock? I'm wanting to get something in the ground in the next few weeks since planting season is beginning.

Just my thoughts as I have no idea of palm prices, especialy in the US....in my opinion any price is a good price if it ticks all of the following boxes
a) if you are not getting ripped off in the first place
b) if it serves the purpose it was bought for
c) if it lasts as long as it is supposed to and does not break, (or die in this case) in the first few months after purchase
d) you get a guarantee of some kind, may be difficult with a tree, I don't know
e) you can afford it
f) your better half won't chase you round the garden lashing you with palm fronds for buying it in the first place
g) you wont be too dissapointed as a consequence if any/all of the above do/don't happen!
Just wish I was in a position to afford to even THINK about spending £385 on a tree. If you get one of any size, I'm sure it will get plenty of TLC. Good luck in your choice : ¬ )

I'm not in a position where I have loads of money lying around waiting for something to spend it on. I set aside a generous landscaping allowance before I bought a home down here since I knew I'd want to re-do the palms. You'd think there were only 2 species of palms with the way home builder's landscape the lots. Every other home has Queens, and the rest have Robustas. The two CIDPs I have were a very pleasant surprise when looking at homes.

That does bring up an interesting question, what would all of our yards look like if money weren't an issue? Would we be planting coconut palms in Seattle and majesties in Boston? Hell, as they die just replace every spring. =) Nah...not fair to the palms.

How are you going to feel after the first frost or hard freeze after spending 765.00 abd they DIE! You can always just save the money and buy smaller ones. Then use the extra cash to buy some other kind. Nothing like a hard freeze to watch your money go down the drain

This is my first time writing in this forum. Pricewise, I would say not a bad deal considering your location. Pricey for south Fla but getting a large palm from the beginning will help protect it in the winter for your area. I would say that the palms pictured are actually green dwarf malayans, not jamaican talls. You can tell because the nodes(scars) on the trunk are very close together compared to the talls. Secondly, the talls have swollen trunks unlike the ones pictured. For your area I would recommend either the mapan or a jamaican/panama tall due to their higher resistance to cold temps(by a few degrees only). In your area lethal yellowing is not such a problem due to the vector(insect carrying disease) dying due to the colder weather. Unfortunately that colder weather is also what kills the coconuts. Either way good luck.

It's really a Catch 22 on growing a coco here, but fun regardless. I've never heard of Maypans as being more cold tolerant; I've heard of that with the golden Malayan varieties though. Great to know however. The coldest we got this winter was 32.0F (4 hours), and that's the coldest in 5 years. The neighbors small coconut burned a little, but given the size I'm not surprised.

The $765 coconut is now a $700 coconut, but I think I'll still pass as I just don't think it's worth it. I found a nursery in St. Pete that has 1.5-2ft of trunk for $399 installed, much more to my liking.

Paul, so how is the house? You are gonna have to send me some pics. I was just thinking almost a year ago i was out by your old stomping grounds picking up them roebies :) Did you end up finding a job down there yet? or are you still living the good life! I just got back from florida on thurs. I went on a cruise then i stayed in miami beach/south beach area for a few days........nice and warm upper 80's!

House is great Brian. I posted some pics of the yard the other day under a post header "Mike and Brian....". I got a job with a major hotel corporation 2 days after moving here(leave name out in public forum)...going great. Orlando has WAY too many jobs for the small population here, def. a employee's market.

How are those roebies? I hope they're still alive...at least some? Another month or so and they can be moved outside, damn those were heavy!

I am going to see if i can find that post..........The roebies are doing GREAT! 2 out of the 3 have lived. The funny thing is all 3 were living at the end of fall and for winter protection i put 1 each in different places. 2 went in two seperate houses and the 3rd one went into a tanning salon that my family owns and the one that went into the tanning salon passed away.....the temps were constant 70's and low 80's i think the real dry air in there killed it.

I guess the tanning salon roebie couldn't take the heat, so to speak. Glad to hear 2 made it out this winter alive, any plans to add other monstrous size palms to your collection? That was so much fun growing in Chicago, definitely a real challenge.

I plan on adding probably one more big one this year. Because as i can see it right now......i know one of the roebies will probably end up staying at one of the houses....my family there fell in love w/it and they have a pool also so it will look nice there. I am gonna try this nursery over here on bell road and 135th probably mid may and see what they are gonna offer......they usually have mature palms (cococ's, roebies, royals, etc)

Hey paul, good call on the st.pete nursery. I live in south Tampa and Home Depot and Lowes has the same 14 foot coconut palms for 325$. And also alot closer to you than south fla. I have two (one golden malaysian and one green malaysian)4 footers in my back yard and they are fine, the temp hasn't been below 38 since i moved here 10 years ago. You might as well get two coconuts for 725$.
