Early spring update (lots of pics)

The weather over here in the West has been nice lately reaching into the 70f's so I decided it was a nice time to take some pics (warning alot of pics). Here are some pics of how my plants and others around are doing.

Palms: pt 2

I believe the palm above the sago is the same palm as the one I posted about earlier. It is a type of phoenix its a senegal date palm.

Fishtail palms:

This is the largest. I didnt see any damage on this guy.

This fishtail is rather new. I think this is its first year in the ground. Has some damage but I think it survived. Are they both the same variety? I'm not familiar with small fishtails.

Thank you for your kind words both about my photography (LOL) and my health. I will post a few photos directly for you.:-)) I doubt that Vintage will custom root Colette since they are, as far as I know, very good friends with the owners of Garden Valley Ranch who offer this rose every year grafted on Dr. Huey. By the way, GVR offers very good quality plants. So I would rather opt for buying from GVR and bury the graft union deep (not like silly me) and then in all probability the plant will go own root in 2-3 years. Most of my Dr. Huey roses did that but Colette was too big to dig her up and replant her deeper by the time I wised up. Or, you can check out Northland Rosarium if you want a good band size plant and if they didn't sell out Colette by now, and you can start growing this rose right away. Northland shipped me excellent quality roses and they guarantee to send virus free plants. I have no idea what's the story with Laguna,it all depends on whether Vintage bought the right from Kordes to propagate it. But if you want it own root, order it early, let's say, right now from Roses Unlimited for fall planting or early next spring. By the way, according to Helpmefind, Northland has Laguna, too, kind of surprising, because they are specialized in Meilland roses, in Romanticas in special. I got my wonderful Bolero and Rouge Royale from them. Both have fragrance to die for. They also have Jasmina, another Kordes climber. Too bad that I cannot report on that rose as yet, mine was planted this spring (came from Pickering, along with Aloha Hawaii)and has a lot of buds but hasn't bloomed as yet. Northland has Colette's sport, named Lunar's mist, but you have enough white or close to white roses for your pergola. Hooverb says it is a very gracious plant. But I also have too many white or almost white climbers by now. Do you have New Dawn? That would be great for a pergola and it is sparkling when it is blooming. I have never seen a pale pink rose with that kind of silvery sheen. It is a great and huge healthy rose and it is vigorous enough to climb up on any pergola. OK, I better shut up.

Hey Annie, Thank you for the compliments, just got done looking are your roses and I would have to say the same! I got the carnations at Lowes I think a few years ago. I love them! They are my birthday flower and I was so excited to find them as I didn't think they would do well down here but then again those places tend to buy things that don't do well for the area. Turns out they have done wonderfully. I do remember you telling me about your daughter living in Columbia and your someday visit down here which I am still looking forward to! :O) Yes, it is too bad she doesn't live closer as I would love to help her out. Mabe when you do end up coming to visit her we can all meet up at the zoo. Then you could come down to visit Charleston. I have a membership to Magnolia Garden and Plantation and I could show you around there and have a picnic there perhaps, I love it there. Maybe you could bring your daughter too and we could have a nice time. July and August are hot and humid though so be prepared. So far it really hasn't been too bad heat wise. We have actually had a nice long cool spring with a few hot days lately but not too bad. Looking forward to your visit! Congratulations grandma! ~Meghan

Beautiful as always Phil. Spring is just around the corner for you and it seems that way for us. After the 2 months of 15 to 20 degree colder weather in the spring last year, we're having 15 - 20 degree warmer weather since November and forecast into January. It looks like late Feb. or March around here. I'm not complaining. I just hope we don't get blasted with 20 (C) below in late January. Happy New Year everyone. Myrle (McTavish) ps. I went out yesterday and snapped a few pictures to share here. Here's Phoenix rupicola. This is by far my favorite of the phoenix species. It's very user friendly and it lacks those nasty spines found in other phoenix palms. Here's a Nikau palm (Rhopalostylis sapida)showing a little bit of damage to leaf tips. I'm surprised to how well it took the cold snap we had Here's a Jubaea chilensis seedling that laughs at the cold and drought we get. I planted this as a 1 strap leaf seedling in March 2008 right after the cold snap in 2007. It's grown slowly, but steadily to this point, but it seems to picking up a bit of speed. I don't water it at all. It survives on our rainfall alone which is similar to the conditions it grows in naturally in Chile. Finally, here are two Manambe palms Dypsis decipiens. The first one was more exposed during the cold snap, and the other one is still in its container. They're both pushing out a new spear though and it looks like they just shrugged off the cold snap we had. These palms saw close to 19F for several hours.

Lol yeah they are toast. But at least I am getting some new growth now :) Its growing kinda fast for this time of year. Hoping for some flowers when the weather warms up more.

Some other banana's:

Comparing damage-
Even after the Artic blast which caused a little cooler temps than normal but with longer durations the bananas in this area still have green leaves. Some spotting and others untouched. But only the lower two/thirds.The top third is all fried. Some even have some ratty looking flowers and small banana's. Cold z10a or warm z9b? I'm still not quite sure what zone they are in. lol. These guys have no over head canopy. Mine has some canopy and on a southern wall. They are completely fried, we hit about 25f on one night and it even took out the leaves that are protected by the over hang. No green leaves at all unlike the ones below.

Nice pics! Glad to see that spring is approaching fast in your area, hopefully it means that winter will be leaving my area soon too! I can definitely handle some 70s!
