Hi Ya'll! Here is a pic of part of my garden from April of this year. In the foreground are a couple of Kiwi Full Monties,with Clifford's Forest Fire in the upper right. Enjoy! Phil

Looking forward to seeing pictures of your hostas popping up again this spring while ours here in West Michigan are sleeping! I really like your of Kiwi Full Monty, I think I'll have to add it to my list!

I'm totally amazed at how hostas disappear during the winter and come back each spring.... especially the really large ones!

The Kiwi Full Monty is much larger than I thought it would be. You must have good drainage there, it looks as if you are on the side of a hill. Great woodland look.

Hi eloise, I already use recharge-able NiCd and NiMH batteries and have been doing so for some time, even before the advent of digital cameras. Some folks taut Lithium batteries, but these are expensive and in AA format, non-rechargeable. I have found a comparison chart that rates various technologies and it is revealing. NiMH appear to be the best way to go. I have a charger that will charge either NiCd or NiMH batteries. Here is a link that might be useful: Battery Technology Comparison

Phil, I'm so sorry for your lack of water. If I could, I'd send you some of ours. It's rained so hard I think someone should build and arc. Connie's right, in the spring we will all be jealous of you when your hostas are up and looking beautiful and ours are still sleeping. McT ps. You need some sort of watering system. I know you've talked about this but is it not possible at all?

Pt. 4 Banana's: My bananas's: Lol yeah they are toast. But at least I am getting some new growth now :) Its growing kinda fast for this time of year. Hoping for some flowers when the weather warms up more. Some other banana's: Comparing damage- Even after the Artic blast which caused a little cooler temps than normal but with longer durations the bananas in this area still have green leaves. Some spotting and others untouched. But only the lower two/thirds.The top third is all fried. Some even have some ratty looking flowers and small banana's. Cold z10a or warm z9b? I'm still not quite sure what zone they are in. lol. These guys have no over head canopy. Mine has some canopy and on a southern wall. They are completely fried, we hit about 25f on one night and it even took out the leaves that are protected by the over hang. No green leaves at all unlike the ones below.

My three clumps of basjoo get about 12' to 15' by this time of year. The most robust cluster must have 10 stems and pups. I think you're right Alex, yours may prefer to winter in ground rather than bring dug up. But you can always spade off a pup or two and nurture them inside this winter. To winter them over outside, let them get hit by the first frost and then cut them down to the ground. Let the cold night air get to the stems for a few nights to a week to signal the plants to stop growing and dry out. Then cover them with 3" to 6" of mulch (not compost). Snow cover will also help insulate them against very cold nights. By mid April you should see multiple pups coming up. Maybe a bit later up in your area. I usually have to spade off excessive pups or ones growing too far from where I want them. I root those and give them as gifts. Good luck.

moccasinlanding,let's put it this way. The only FLAT place where I live is the homesite;other than that,everything is either uphill,or downhill! Yes my garden is on the side of a small mountain. Thanks for looking. Phil

Gary,the ferns in the pic are much shorter than the pic shows,and when these particalar hostas grow up,they tower over the ferns,especially one not shown in the pic,which is Elatior which grows very tall later on in the season. Phil

We in upstate NY had the most rain since 1871 or so, had towns flooded, we also had some high heat. Therefore, I really enjoy the mild and no-snow weather right now, only 3 more months to spring.

Jan,he was planted in 2007 as a 1 gallon pot. Not a lot of eyes but it grows well. Thanks for looking! Phil

Thanks for your photo of these nice hostas! My plants might look good like that in a few years. I have a look alike - Magic Fire. We need more pictures like that for the next 3 months!

Beautiful as always Phil. Spring is just around the corner for you and it seems that way for us. After the 2 months of 15 to 20 degree colder weather in the spring last year, we're having 15 - 20 degree warmer weather since November and forecast into January. It looks like late Feb. or March around here. I'm not complaining. I just hope we don't get blasted with 20 (C) below in late January.
