Top 5 favorite Itohs

I already have one tiny Peony plant so that means I might have room for 5 more.

Please share your top 5 favorite Itohs. There are so many to chose from I'm feeling overwhelmed. I just don't want to make the same mistake I did with buying plumeria. Now I have to go through the pain of letting half of my collection go due to space issues. Besides, 80 plumeria is just too much work! But letting go of my babies will be rough! Ã°ÂÂÂ¥

What colors do you like best, No-Clue? Do you like the ones with flares? The ones that start one color and fade to something completely different so you have multiple colors of blooms on a single plant at one time? Singles or Doubles? Really large flowers, large or smaller shrub? There are so many Itohs now that you might have to list the properties you want in the varieties you choose to narrow it down. It seems like every time I decide I have all of the varieties I want I see another picture of one that is absolutely incredible.

I have quite a few Itohs now but only 3 that have bloomed to date, Singing in the Rain, Strawberry Blonde and Berry Garcia. I'm drawn to the larger flowers so Strawberry Blonde is my favorite out of the ones I've seen in person. Bartzella seems to be an all time favorite although another PE (Peony Enthusiast!) that has both Bartzella and Yumi says Yumi is prettier.

You'll have to tell us which ones you decide on and why and please post pics when they bloom!

Hi Lizin,

I love fragrance and large flowers. I also love the double over single. And I like the more rarer varieties so the harder it is to find the more I want it! Now that's my logically side talking.

The emotional side is very impulsive. So I could walk into a nursery and walked out with a plant that has none of the criteria I listed above simply because it has buds! How did you think I ended up with 80 plumerias after two seasons? Ã°ÂÂÂ

I'm planning to head to a nursery this afternoon now that I'm over the shock of the price tags. Let's see what I find and how much self control I have.

Thanks, Seil, for that info. about basal shoots. A Wisconsin Rosarian wrote the same about burying it too deep inhibits basal shoots, and he prefers to mound soil on top over the winter. On the contrary, Douglas Green, Canadian nurseryman, recommended burying it 6" deep like Karl did for his Firefighter & other HT's with only some oak leaves as winter protection. I made the mistake of burying a peony too deep (12 inches), it never flower - so I tried to kill it for the past 12 years. It never die on me, and kept sending shoots. The soil there is always wet. I suspect as long as there's moisture, basal shoots always grow. The recent peonies which I planted shallow (1" deep) are more wimpy with early winter-die back. I gave my neighbor a peony and they planted it shallow, it died during 2004-05 drought. The nursery sent me a grafted rose by mistake, Pat Austin, hardy to zone 6b. I planted it 3" deep. She's the most winter-hardy compared to the other nine own-roots, zone 5b Austins which I planted shallow at soil surface. They all came as same-height bands. I'll plant all my own-roots 3" deep for this spring. Favorite zone 5's roses: Any Austins and any shrubs. In zone 5a rose park nearby, the hybrid teas are really short and didn't bloom early June - while the Austins and hardy shrubs are 4' tall, tons of blooms, and ready to be sniffed. Hardy shrubs bloom much earlier than Hybrid teas.

Even when I had my smallish collection growing in very-less-than-ideal conditions (pots, shade ranging from some to deep, etc. etc. etc.), I'd have had difficulty limiting the number to five. So much difficulty in fact that, with the exception of a few I left behind by mistake, I took my entire collection when we moved. Now that so many of them are growing as they should be grown, choosing just five?....fuggedaboutit, as they say.:) But if you're looking for a short list of "classic" or "should be grown" daylilies, think about adding RUBY SPIDER to the list. I had a couple of mingy fans in the shade, which did absolutely zippo at the old place. Here, in the veg garden, with its amazing soil, it exploded into a clump within a year. Fabulous brilliant red, really really eye-catching. I don't have it, but I definitely second BELLE COOK. I was so impressed with it in the nearby AHS display garden that I marked it down twice on my list, once per visit, and without realizing it. I probably will get it this year. Same with HEAVENLY ANGEL ICE -- this one is gorgeous here in zone 6. You should think about getting that one, too. Here are a few more in my collection that I love and would recommend: JOLLY GOOD FELLOW, a now-somewhat older (2004) Don Herr intro with interesting color that just blooms and blooms and blooms, and on such a nice scape, too; ISLAND GLAMOROUS GUEST, from George Rasmussen, very quietly elegant blooms (a diploid....don't know whether that matters to you or not); and RUFFLED STRAWBERRY PARFAIT, late and toothy and lovely... Those are just off the top of my head. Oh, and I think I'll second STRUTTER'S BALL, for its color. Last year, at our club's spring luncheon, Curt Hanson said he thought there was nothing better out there in purple daylilies. I can't say I've liked the way mine melted in afternoon hot sun (so it's now sited where it gets some afternoon shade), but when the color's good, it's great. There! A rather arbitrary list of five of my daylilies after all, and, with the exception of JOLLY GOOD FELLOW, all easily obtained and fairly inexpensive I think. The list'd be quite different if I were basing on rarity, as Debra did, but if I were to move again, I'd take 'em all with me. Again. And since I can't seem to stop collecting, I'd have rather more than five to move. Again. :)

yeah yeah i know... but couldn't resist. (Yellow) 1)Aureum for graceful leaf shape and color (runner up Jordan/Katsura/Summer Gold) (dissectum) 2) Seiryu for its soft light green elegant leaves and vase growth habit (Laceleaf) 3) koto no ito for beautiful weeping habit (followed closely by villa taranto and Aekans Le's with its great purple bark) (variegated) 4) Peve Multicolor variegation on this one is inconsistent. BUT the bark is spectacular at least mine is - a light blueish silvery color. Underrated. (ukigomo) (pink) 5) Geisha - Terrific pink color. (also GGW. Taylor I like but killed 2 already - too fickle) (bark) 6) Acer Griseum ( runner up snakebark phoenix/joe witt/Murasaki Shikibu PINK STRIPED BARK!!!) HONORABLE MENTION - Amagi Shigure/Olsens Frosted. hummersteve: I can imagine the worms won't take to baked potatoes leavings right away. I don't bake my potatoes but may I suggest you "age" your baked potato leavings in a container with some liquid. Once it's mushy, I'm sure the worms will be all over it. I micro-waved potato peels (I know, waste of energy) for a few minutes and then let them sit for about a week or so before adding to the worm bin.

My alltime favorite is "Singing In The Rain",long bloomer, last year in full bloom from June 2- June 24! "Cora Louise" & "Bartzella" tie for 2nd."Going Bananas" is 3rd. I haven't had my others long enough to judge. "Julia Rose" looks like it will be a good one.

But so far I can't seem to find those you listed locally. I'm going to have to order them online aren't I?

OMGosh!! I just looked up Cora Louise. What a STUNNER! I love the color combo. So delicate and just simply beautiful! See this was exactly what happened w/ my plumeria. I going to be in big trouble aren't I?

I've never noticed but have read that Itohs don't have much of a fragrance. Anyone out there sniffing the Itohs? Do any of them have a really good scent?

I read the same thing too. Unfortunately, in my climate I can't just grow any peonies. I was told I might have a chance with the Itohs so that's what I'm trying.

The Itihs are so pretty that I think no fragrance isn't a big issue! You can always plant something that smells really good nearby. You might go through a lot of ice next winter trying to chili the tubers but I'd go for it if I were you! Grab a few Itohs and maybe a herbaceous that others have vouched for and do it!
