Lace up your sneakers and work off all those holiday sweets by going on a walking tour of Art Deco buildings in downtown Los Angeles, or the Flatiron District in New York. Save the date for Toronto's largest contemporary design fair and engage in thoughtful provoking discussions at their annual creative symposium. If you're looking for ways to be inspired or just enjoy getting out amid other design lovers, here is our shortlist of things to do around the world.
WALKING TOUR — Jan. 1, 2011, Flatiron District Walking Tour, 11 a.m. (every Sunday). Meet at the SW corner of Madison Square Park, at 23rd Street and Broadway, New York, NY.
Escape the throngs of holiday shoppers and join a professional guide on a 90-minute journey through the historic Flatiron district. View some of the city’s most notable landmarks, including the New York Life Insurance Building, MetLife Clock Tower, Appellate Courthouse and the famous Flatiron Building.

Attend a free lecture with Berkeley-based Peter Walker, founder of PWP Landscape Architecture, and co-designer of the National September 11 Memorial in New York. Walker's career spans five decades, and he continues to have an international influence on the field of environmental design. Over the years, PWPLA has created numerous prize-winning and iconic designs, ranging from small gardens to complete master plans. Walker served as co-designer with Michael Arad to the National September 11th Memorial, unveiled this past September.

Pershing Square, (Olive Street and 6th Street in downtown Los Angeles). Tour meets in the center of the park, near the mini-groves of orange trees.

Lace up your sneakers and join the Los Angeles Conservancy for a 2½-hour walking tour through downtown LA. Get an in-depth look at the history, materials, and style of Art Deco architecture from the 1920s-30s. Learn about the modern and angular style typified by vertical lines, geometric patterns and how this architecture style is now a staple of downtown LA's building aesthetic. The approximately 1½-mile walk will stop at the Eastern Columbia (featured above), Southern California Edison Company, William Fox, Oviatt, Garfield Buildings and more.

There’s fun to be done at this creative exhibit celebrating the life and art of Theodor Seuss Geisel, otherwise known as Dr. Seuss. Known as the imaginative force behind a bevy of fanciful people, creatures and things beloved by generations, his multi-faceted collection of work, including editorial cartoons, drawings, surrealist paintings and more, will be on display. Interactive displays including whimsical, hands-on activities focus on Dr. Seuss’ innovative thinking. You’ll have the chance to invent your own noise contraption, and write a book with only 50 words — as Dr. Seuss did with Green Eggs and Ham — and more.
