Pictures of my palm trees during snow storm!

Hey Everyone!!! I wanted to share a couple of pictures of my palms during our snow storm on Friday...We had a total of 9 inches here in Va.Beach...I took a picture of the same palms on Monday....they recovered pretty well...The temps are 37* and the snow is melting pretty fast!!

Pretty hefty dump of snow,quite beautiful!

I live in Upstate NY - near the Canadian border - yes, WAY upstate - Zone 4a! I wanted to post some pictures of the ice storm that we had around Christmas. Many of our trees were destroyed - seriously. I have a White Pine that I loved - blocked the view of the house - that is basically sheared away in the middle. Still not sure what we are going to do with this. Many trees were just snapped. My Tamarack snapped and the top ten feet of the tree broke off. Three Red Cedars almost done for. Poplars that were sheared. I will be honesty and say it is hard for me to go back and look at these pictures. Almost two months later now we have cut and chipped some limbs (figured we better get started on this early) that are already on the ground. The big Black Cherry we had to skid out with the 4-wheeler and we cut down the remaining truck and skidded that out too. We have had quite a bit of snowfall as of late so getting in there with the chipper is not possible now. When we bought this property it hadn't been maintained all that well in the last few years. We have worked hard the last three years sprucing it up and to see this act of God hurt. It is ironic to me because I know how obsessed, literally, I have been with it and to watch God allow it to be cut down in a matter of days - wow! Maybe He is trying to tell me something - more important things in life???? My DH kept telling me it could have been worse - tree through the roof, etc. - he is right I know but still hard for me to swallow - I loved all the work we had done. If anyone has any suggestions as far as what to do with these - obviously some have to be cut to the ground - I'd appreciate to hear anyone's opinion. White Pine Before/During Ice Storm - entire middle section is pretty much missing. You can see the snapped branches - I couldn't believe how many I hauled out of there that were just snapped off. Tamarack with top ten feet snapped out of it. Next to White Pine in above picture. Three Red Cedars as the ice storm was just starting/and now. Black Cherry Limb snapped off - honestly, this is the only one I really did want gone. Back of the house: You can see the White Birch that is hanging toward the house in the center and over another smaller red cedar. This tree is really three trunks and I imagine we will be cutting it down this Spring. The one limb never went all the way back up and the other two trunks are snapped at the tops.

hey dan.. your link failed .. for me anyway .... i figured view blocking was the issue ... but what often happens.. when they all grow up together... then tend to age the same.. and all start having the same problems ... e.g. .. how do you know the one on either side of the affected one.. now doesnt have root issues for the next storm????? ergo ... by removing this one.. and having just a bit of a view of the neighbor.. you can get a something else going so that in 3 to 5 years.. when the next fails... the new one will be doing its job .. i have no personal experience with these plants.. but i have read at least 100 times.. how they fail .. they seem to be planted because they are fast growing.. but all ... all ... fast growing trees and conifers.. eventually fail.. simple because they are fast growing ... it may be time to think long and hard.. about where you are going to be... screen-wise.. 5 .. 10.. 15 years down the line... and perhaps plant some new stock... while the old is still there... so removal and replacement is not so extraordinary ... a picture might sure help delineate the issues for us.. good luck have fun whatever you decide ... ken

Hey Greg, I'm so glad you all had a good soaking rain today!!! Only wish that I could take the credit!!! LOL...But we all know who really deserves the credit... Mother Nature of course!!! as well as the big guy upstairs!!! We did receive a great shower this afternoon...so I quickly put out my rain barrals and placed them under the eaves. Within 15 minutes or so they were full...so of course I had to grab a few (6) of my five gallon buckets to fillup as well...The only problem was that the showers were so off ond on that I had to stay on the rain collection duty...Yes, I was completely soaked...Only plant lovers would do this for them right? I know that my neighbors wonder what I'm up to sometimes...but it's good for them to keep them guessing!!! LOL...Now I have collected in a matter of 45 minutes...70 gallons of rainwater. I guess it was worth getting drenched for that amount of water!!! It will be gone in a couple of days with this intense heat we are having...but I loved doing it today...I felt like a kid again!!! Hope that the storms that are forcasted for tommorow will reach you again...Put out those barrals!!! I'll be waiting to hear if you collected any amounts Greg!!! :) How are your Hardy Hibiscus doing? Hi Charlene, Welcome home from your "trip"! Great story! I bet that honeymoon suite hasn't seen too many couples there with their kids! LOL And glad you're safely back home. I feel so sorry for all the people that are still at DIA---and probably will be for days yet! I'm a flight attendant and had been getting really down because I've been stuck down here on the ground for over a month now because I had surgery on my elbow, but when the blizzard started for real, I was so happy to be "stuck down here on the ground!" It's WAY better than having gotten stuck at the airport and winding up sleeping on the floor up in the domicile---which happened to a whole lot of people (not me) during the March blizzard of '03! Here's my Thornton blizzard story! Since I'm off I didn't need to worry about going out in it, so on Wednesday I just watched the people at DIA on TV all day. Then late afternoon I went out to try to shovel the 12" of snow off my sidewalk thinking (mistakenly) that it would make it easier to shovel the next day. Since I'm not supposed to be lifting anymore than 1 lb. with my left hand, I shoveled it 95% using just my right hand. Never knew you could do that, but you can! Except---one time when I got the shovel full and bent over to pick it up to empty it, I got too much "twist" in it and did something BAD to my back, so I decided to go in the house for a little bit to rest, but when I tried to take a step it hurt too much so I just stood there till it felt a little bit better--and I could move again--and started shoveling again. On Thursday I discovered that blizzards are no respecters of shoveled sidewalks, and when the snow finally stopped around noon, there was 14-16" of snow on my "shoveled" sidewalk, so I put on my eskimo suit and went back out to do it again. My back and the muscles in my right arm were so sore from the day before, that I decided whether I was supposed to or not, I was going to have to use my left arm. The city requires that walks be shoveled within 24 hours, so I was planning to shovel a one shovel wide path down the walk---and that was all. Right after I started, the neighbor across the street who was shoveling his drive started talking to me, and I mentioned that I had had surgery and wasn't supposed to be using my arm---and he went in and got his BIG 15 year old son out and told him to shovel the walk for me. He had it finished in less than 10 minutes---it would have taken me at least an hour like it had the day before! The neighbor asked if I needed the (hip deep) snow on the driveway shoveled, and I told him I didn't--that I didn't need to leave for a week and was just going to wait for the sun to melt it off---this is Denver, after all, and my driveway faces south! Then, early this afternoon I was at my kitchen window--which faces the front of the house--when I noticed that the snow on top of my roses didn't look "smooth" anymore. I can't see my drive very well from inside the house, but I went in the living room where I can see part of it, and the whole drive had been shoveled! I couldn't believe it--and started to cry! I waited until I was sure they were home this evening and went over to verify that it was them---they have two BIG teen boys--and to thank them--and started to cry again! It was so-o nice of them, and was the nicest Christmas present anyone could have given me. It means so much when someone does you a random act of kindness! This summer I'm going to take them some perennials and some produce from my garden. I can hardly wait! I'm sorry you didn't get to Mazatlan, but it's great that you were able to have a fun time anyway. I hope you are able to get your trip refunded--I know United is offering full refunds to anyone who had their flite cancelled. Merry Christmas, Skybird/Dee

Thats probably the biggest snow you have seen in a while. I looks like your palms are doing really great this winter, and they look amazing when covered in snow. The strong sun will probably melt it very fast. Even by me most of the snow doesnt stay too long even if the temperatures arent high because of the strong sun. But im sure the city was shut down after a snow like that.

Thanks for the Great comments everyone!!!

The sun is trying to melt the snow pretty fast...but the city can't keep up with clearing the streets...so they cancelled school for the kids again for tomorrow!!!
The secondary streets are still covered and the temps are down below freezing at night.

TZ, This has been quite a storm for the city of VB...They finally predicted this one!!! My trees are doing quite well this winter...I just let the sun melt the snow away from the fronds...I don't think it's a good idea to beat away the snow or ice with anything...I let mother nature handle most of the work!!!

Hi Laura,

Glad you posted photos, I was wondering what happened there. Is this the biggest VB storm in a decade? What was the lowest temp after the storm?

I think you found a VB Christmas picture :-)

Hi Greg,

Yes, I think this was the biggest snowfall that VB has seen in quite along time!!! Now they are predicting another snowstorm on Saturday...I hope the temps warm up so we will see rain instead!! Enough snow for now!!!
I think the lows for our area after the snowfall were down into the high 20's...then back up into the mid 30's so we started to thaw out. The back streets are finally clearing up...now everyone can get back to normal!!!
VBers don't handle the snow very well...they drive like it's the first time they have ever been on the road!!! (Drives me crazy) LOL !!!

Great idea for Christmas cards!!! I Only wish that I hadn't taken down the large ornaments that were hanging from the palms during Christmas!!! That would really make a great Christmas card with the snow on the ground!!!

Sabal Palmetto, Butia Capitata, and Trachy... we were a zone 9a until this show hit and made the temps drop it didnt get below 21* until this snow came. but we are a very wet 8b area... so i wouldnt consider it as a zone 9 tho.. i have snow palmy pics ill post soon thanks laura beautiful

@ Loveplants2, Well now I know what "Florida" would look like with snow falling and covered in several inches! Great pics! I still think you yard reminds me of central Florida. Love it! =o)

I have several Sabal Palmettos in that picture (one to the left is a Sabal) then in the middle is a Jelly (Pindo) palm then at the right is a Windmill Palm with a Sabal behind the Windmill...Spanish Ban.
