If it was me I would jut leave it covered. Dont uncover it until temps stay above freezing around the end of march its not going to do any growing until warmer weather anyway. If you uncover you have chances for it get damaged. Trust me im getting the itch to uncover things to especially with the days getting longer but ive lost alot of plants in the past uncovering them early.

HaHa,how much snow was covering them?I really don't see the harm in checking in on them as long as its not going to alter the level of protection but for sure wait until the snow is all gone.My palms under the styrofoam protection have held up the best, (well I guess the big"G/house" also as the cover is more opaque)because the sun was not beating down on them,they have a hard time pulling up water when the soil is cold and it just stresses them,I will post some comparison pics tomorrow(hopefully)I have been pulling the covers on my S.louisiana, T.campestris and needles when ever the temp is above 45 which has not been to often lately,I don't want to wake them up prematurely but I do like keeping them in the game,however I will stagger their exposure to every other day at most and keep a close watch for any leaf stress,like I said I will post some pics of the palms that are in the clear plastic for comparison-our forecast starting tomorrow is-44-48-51-45-54-51,then back to more"normal"Feb temps in the 20F to 35ish range,we are almost out of this $***
Did I mention that I am a little obsessive about these palms?well I have some free time now so I will pull the mulch back and let the sun warm the soil a little and then push it back at night to retain some warmth,I will try this on a few and see if it makes any difference this late winter,early spring and on all when it really warms up later in March,hey,anything to help my little green friends get a jump,within reason!

Thank you guys. I'm not talking about uncovering them for the winter but I wouls like to try and get the ground to thaw a little. They were covered by 2-3 feet of snow. It makes a great insulator. The snow will be gone by Sunday regardless. Especially if it rains on Saturday as predicted.

2 or 3 feet of snow will melt by sunday?

Andy I figured you were not looking to plant any Begonias around your palms-LOL,I would just be carefull not to give them to much sun as it can be hard on them with frozen or even cold/cool ground temps,what about wrapping them a little with some burlap or something to protect them a little at first and still get some sun on the ground?don't forget to pull the mulch back during the day so the sun is actually warming the ground and not just the top of the mulch,let me know what they look like,(pics?)would be very interested to see,I am looking forward to pulling the protection on my needle palms(big leaf cage)to see whats what after air temps of -16 and -13,good luck! hope this will be the best spring/summer yet!

Oh, andyandy, winter has been cruel for you this year. Sabal are tough, but your climate is truly challenging. I wish your plants all the best of luck.

Actually parts of Alaska on the water are zone 7. Trachys could do well there. We have a chance to beat the record (56) here tomorrow and into the 50s the day after also.
