scorpions, scorpions?????
Comments (23)Scorpions(Bark Scorpions) are not as dangerous at the media would lead you to believe. They do not normally sting to defend themselves, their first course of defense is to scurry away and hide, they will sting however if trapped like in a shoe or under a sheet. I have picked them up and also found them crawling on my leg without stinging. We literally have hundreds if not thousands of Scorpions on our irrigated citrus lot, they definitely prefer being outside although we do occasionally find them in the house. They avoid the interior of the house because we spray for bugs in the house eliminating their food source(roaches and crickets). I have been stung several times and so has my dog and my daughter when she was about 3 or 4 years old. Yes, it hurts, about as bad as a bee sting, but it lasts much longer(a day or two). I guess if you are allergic you could get very ill or possibly die(just like people who are allergic to bee stings) but I think that is very unlikely.(when was the last time you actually heard of someone dying from a scorpion sting?) I was stung by a paper wasp on the knuckle and some kind of ant on the foot and those hurt 10 times worse than a scorpion sting. We also have lots of Black Widow spiders, I'm much more afraid of those because I believe those bites actually are dangerous. If you have the ability to keep a domestic chicken in your yard, they will eat every scorpion(and every other bug) they can find. My family has learned to live in harmony with the scorpions, they keep the bug population under control, we no longer freak out when we see one, and when we have a party I get out a black light and go on a scorpion hunt with all of the kids, we usually can catch 50-60 in a half hour, sometimes we even find a mother with hundreds of tiny babies on her back....See MoreScorpion Control
Comments (42)Greetings! This thread appears to still be active, and I hope that members who're acquainted with small Georgia creatures may be able to help me. I'm currently at a relative's home where there are problems with scorpions and assorted "cousins." Though I'd never seen a scorpion before I arrived here with my small dog, I've seen many since coming. Among them the one that stung one of my feet while I was sitting at my computer, the one that fell off my black dog onto our bed when she jumped up onto it, and the one that somehow got on the bed and stung me awake one morning. Possibly it came through a ceiling vent, like a millipede that fell through the vent onto the bed one day, when I just happened to be looking. [The vent is now closed---I opted for fans instead of AC, under the circumstances.] I mainly control the scorpions by mashing them flat with a shoe, then flushing the remains--I've learned to be quicker than they are, and I offer them no life-options if they choose to come indoors. But something was on the bedroom floor a few nights ago that I haven't been able to identify, despite many hours online researching. It was shiny black, with a red spot about the size of a lady bug on its back. Including legs and possible pincers, the total shape was basically round, about the diameter of a quarter, maybe a little smaller. The legs and other appendages were sturdy looking/fat, and the almost-flat segmented body, about 3/8" long, was rectangular, not round or oval or in any way spider-like. Possibilities I've seen in research were pseudoscorpions, but they're usually shown as very small, and no picture even begins to approximate this (now-deceased) visitor. Ideas anyone? I looked at pix of trapdoor spiders, but the body isn't right. Hopefully there won't be another of these before my dog and I leave, but just in case, I'd like to know what I'm dealing with. Oh, and while I'm at it, there was a scorpion on a bathroom floor one night last week, longer, wider and "crustier" than the usual ones, and with a light colored cluster of dots (?) on its back. Different species? I've researched a lot to solve this temporary problem for my dog CJ and me, but haven't found all of the answers needed to make sure we're safe. Would appreciate any help you can offer. Thanks!...See MoreReviving a one year old scorpion pepper with hydroponics
Comments (1)I would feed it half strength nutes for now with no foliar feed. Let it get over the transplant shock and bear in mind the soil roots will need time to convert to water roots. I have some 4yr old chilli plants that live and overwinter in 20L tubs filled with hydroton, i have a hole 1.5" up from the bottom of the tub with a pipe attached which acts as a drain. I lift the pipe up and manually flood the tubs using a watering can filled with nutes and drop the pipe down to drain it back into the watering can. They always have 1.5" of nutes at the bottom of the hydroton they can use. They are flooded once a week in winter and 3 times a day in summer. Here`s one of the gnarly specimens. Comments (3)Well. Delightful homeowners. There were so many things that were beautiful (e.g., the paper mache obelisks!). However, all that stuff--everywhere--would make me itchy and restless and I'd never be able to relax. I guess I'm an unlayered person. I need white space, breathing room. My cats would love it, kwim?...See Moreseeker1122
