Rotted Trachy in ground...help!
Comments (24)Good deal, don't be afraid to plant now either, just make sure to work the soil so its loose so those roots can spread out with as little resistance as possible, and as always make sure soil drains well.I think at least as important and maybe more in some ways is keeping it dry(what is your zone and state)in mid fall going in to winter, through the winter and then not giving it to much water rightaway going into spring as roots dry up a little in dry soil you don,t want to overwater.I only watered mine a handfull of times during the winter lightly, and twice I watered it deeper( only when I saw that there was no frigid weather in the foreseeable future),and made sure it was dry before and during any arctic blasts, this does require watching the weather closely, its also important to have big enough openings to let moisture vent after watering.I planted mine Nov 1 and they made it fine, but I did baby them, nothing below 9F and never above 90F,(I wish the 90F would have been less but they did allright anyway)your new one should do fine.B.T.W,CFT nursery on e-bay has sone great deals on trachys etc.GOOD LUCK FRMMI!!!!!!! Here are some pics of mine in april and now-...See MoreAll the planted Trachys and a couple other pics.
Comments (3)I cant believe its that time again to cover up the palms. Your palms look great Jim. My washy did well this year with 13 new frond, I ended up cutting back 4 or 5 fronds. Its amazing how big it grew compared to last year....See MoreOverwintering a trachy in Central Ohio.
Comments (8)Thanks for the rsponse all.... @ brooklyngreg I have mulch about 5 inches deep inside and outside the enclosure. The enclosure itself covers about 7 to 8 inches in diameter from the trunk of the Trachy. I have c7 lights laying on the around the whole protected area and c7 lights in the tree itself making sure the bulbs aren't directly touching the plant. Today it is 16 degrees with a windchill pushing -2 and tonight it should be a windchill of -4 I think. The fact that snow has built up heavily on the top and around the bottom of the enclosure tells me it's insulated fairly well, however I did consider the roots freezing but mybe my next tree planting I follow your advice and dig the hole and insulate with construction grade foam....See Morei hope the palms make it through this!
Comments (80)Most of the snow melted here too (except for a scattered pile or 2 in the front yard) it should all melt by tomorrow. Today was very very windy. Im surprised there werent any wind warnings out because they were gusting probably in the 50 mph range (not too much damage around, but things were thrown a little). More snow possible next week, by then I hope to bring in my potted pindo palm. Good luck!...See Moreearthworm73
