Fatal mistake

Man I screwed up. I went outside today because I had a bad feeling and checked on the palms. The sabal palmetto is still green and ready to be uncovered. I went into the cold frame and to my horror my butia looks fried. The leaves are all windburned. The trunk is green and the leave stems are green but the leaves in the bud area looks burned too. I found the side of the cold frame flapping in the wind. After getting a closer look the tie downs were lifted out of the ground. It may have been like this during the whole week that it was 0f everynight. My male trachy thats on the same side also has lots of leaf burn. My female trachy on the other side looks a little wind beaten but she looks the best out of the bunch.

I would mix up some copper and pour into the bud and pray. I would not let it get cold again this year and it will have a chance of survival.If you really want it I would put it in the house.

So sorry to read of your palm problem Mike, I am no expert (as you all probably know), just an learner, but hopefully if the spears are still green and not damaged they will come back given time?? I hope so.
I thought I'd lost a Phoenix D from a large DIY store some 4 yrs ago, on bringing it home it promptly browned immediately and crisped every frond and they all died off, it didnt even have a spear showing. I cut every bit off except the central growing area and re-potted it from the dust like black 'soil' it was potted in and today its 5ft high and thriving...so don't give up just give them that extra TLC, also you have way more expertise than me which must be a bonus! Hi all, Kind thanks for all your replies. Here's my very late update: All my cuttings rooted in water after a week or so but I only potted them a couple of weeks after the fact (got busy with other things). Potted them in left over 50% MG (bad I know) 50% perlite. I found it very difficult arranging the vines after they had been growing this way and that over the past several months --had to cut some vines up so they would fit. I also tried NOT to bury a lot of stem deep in the potting medium out of fear for future rot, but found it difficult to keep some of the vines stabilized otherwise. Hope I didn't mess that up too badly. In the end, I was left with one medium sized "plant", one small, one tiny, and a handful of leftover vines to give away to friends. After potting, I watered, and then wrapped them up in those big dry cleaner bags and set aside. None wilted! Hurrah! Two leaves turned yellow but I suppose that's acceptable collateral damage. Overall they seem to be doing well --some new leaves have unfurled at the tips. I've only watered once or twice since they were potted, when the soil feels dry. I hope by next spring I'll see the same level of growth as the mother plant had this year.

I just now read that you should lightly put dry mix in cups and then water it That only applies to certain types of mixes - those that contain a wetting agent - and even then you d not have to do it that way. Most mixes do not contain wetting agents so dry mix in containers is NOT generally recommended. You have to read the ingredients in your mix to see if it lists wetting agents. And like Lynn said, no you do not pack it tight. Grab a handful of the wet mix and wring it out in your fist. Then put it in the container and just use your fingers to lightly level it out in the container. Dave

You've certainly got a showstopper in your house with a 48 inch. That's a very large range, and if you entertain a lot you're going to love it. I think you made a solid choice. Personally I love the look of them, but I just couldn't justify the space for one in my home.

I broke out the concentrated fungicide. I completely covered all three palms. I completely covered the bud areas 3 times. I fixed the area of the cold frame. When I fixed it I noticed almost right away a 15 degree raise in the temperature in the coldframe. I wrapped the butia some to keep it extra warm. We will see what happens If I can save it. The one thing that is good after all of this is the butia has 2 1/2 almost 3 years of good root growth in the ground.

Mike don't realy want to discourage you but a butia grows fairly fast if it's healthy. A cold damaged butia especially one that's fried will take quite a while to grow. I would not expect to see any growth anytime soon.Especially with this cooler weather. As andy

Well I have some great news!! Today I went to the " stump " that was my pindo palm. I had to cut all the stems and leaves off and it kind of look like a brown stump. I noticed that the bud area had pushed up almost a whole inch!! I am so happy! I bought the other pindo thinking it was through. I put 3 flood lights on the "stump" and the temp has been around 100f for 14 days now. You can see clearly divides in what will be leaves and even the hint of green. Thanx for the kind thoughts. Now what to do with the other capitata and the eriospatha??

I would be careful not to fry it with too warm of temps since that can have the opposite desired effect. Great news and I hope it contunies to recover. Hopefully warmer weather is on the way.

Thanx virginian. Its been in the 50's and 60's with all sun so it warming up. I fertilized it and have been watering it daily Its growing fast now. I think I will have a whole leaf in a couple weeks. Ill post a pic when I get home from work today.

Here are some pics of some of the damage palms that turned up tp be real survivors. This was a terrible as winter as we could get and I hope the winters get better lol. The first shows the butia growing back 2 leaves both growing in opposite sides.

And this is my about 10ft palmetto who took lots of winter cold and is still hanging around. Its pushing out the second leaf and the 3rd is raising up out of the bud. If you remeber it bloomed in the winter but all of the flower stalks burned of and died. If it could take this past winter the rest will be much easier.

Will do Iowa palms. I had 2 the other one died the right away. Thhis one seems to be a trooper.
