You should not have to be watering any palm (no matter what it is planted in) on a once (or even once every other day) frequency.--Especially if its roots are already growing in the Terrasorb. I might be giving different advice if it were July but this is January and you're in the North. I find it hard to believe that this advice is being offered as standard advice regardless of circumstances. (Yes, I probably do water my palms every day or every other day when they are outside in full or part sun and day temps are in the low to mid 90's, but not inside the house, in the Winter, in the North.

The tallest one measured from the base of the plant was 50 inches at best! Sorry I should have clarified, I'm looking now to purchase palms for this coming spring. I'm not planting anything until probably March or later. My question was directed at springtime watering, in full sun, and probably mid 60s to 70s weather, since it will be in early spring when I'll be planting.

I was considering purchasing from Paradise Palms, and searched Ty Ty for a price comparison, and found that both use Terrasorb.

Yes I have heard bad things about Ty Ty and wouldn't purchase from them, especially since all of their stuff is shipped bare root. Paradise Palms at least ships with some soil in the rootball.

Islb,I think if you have a fast draining soil with lots of mulch,leaves,greensand and organic matter that its a good idea to keep the roots moist as long as the soil is warmed up,one thing I am going to do this year that I did not do a good job with last year is waiting longer for the ground to warm up and really working in a lot of organic matter into the soil so the roots can really get dug in I think doing this alone can take at least a year off the normal few years it takes plants (palms especially)to get established.

Islandbreeze, I purchased two Windmill's from Paradise Palm last spring. I think I paid $25 each and received two very nice trees, around 3ft tall from the base to the tip of the tallest frond. Although, I have found some better deals and nicer trees on ebay for less...

Thanks guys. The issue is not finding windmill palms...as a matter of fact I probably have too many lol. The issue is finding large windmill palms that can be delivered. Paradise also sells 6 foot windmills for $259, but they only have a couple feet of trunk(I already emailed the company about them). For $175 more, shipping included, I can get at least 2 more feet of trunk, which should make the tree hardier and able to recover more easily from defoliation, should it occur, not to mention a larger palm is a nicer palm. I have several windmills already, two 3-footers with nice thick trunks, 2 Taylor form that are about 2 1/2 feet, a waggie the same size, and a small Takil.

I had another 3 footer in the ground that died last summer from rot, so I'm looking for a larger one to replace it. I think the reason it died was overwatering, root rot. I watered nearly every day in the summer because it wasn't growing. I figured it was too hot for the palm, and watering would help, but instead it might have killed it. Near the end of summer, the spear pulled and the trunk started to get mushy. I dug it up, only to find brown, not white, roots. That's why I want to keep this problem from occuring again.

I doubt you overwatered it,if it wasn't growing it was already going down hill,in my experience a healthy palm is always growing,sometimes it can take a year or more depending on environmental stresses for us to see it.

This is what my 7 footer looked like a day after I received it from Paradise Palm. My front landscape was not ready yet so I placed it in a big pot for the time being. Bought mine in April.

Wow! That palm is no joke! That's a real full sized palm tree they sent you. Did it put on any new fronds after you cut the old ones off? The only thing that I'd have to consider before buying a palm that big is if I'd be willing to make a structure tall enough to protect it, especially if it grows much bigger than that.

I ordered two Medjool date palms from TyTy nursery about 2 years ago. I was very satisfied...I guess maybe I just got lucky? :)

It took about 3 months to really start growing. By September and October it was really growing fast. I think this summer it will get full looking again
