Growing a Coconut Indoors
Comments (4)Hi, I live on the sunny side of Maui, and we have coconuts in the garden. I can't help you with indoor growing, but can tell you our winter temps are in the low 80's during the day and into the mid 60's during the night. Our humidity is usually in the 80% range. However there are many climate variations on the island and coconuts seem to grow everywhere except at the highest elevations. Good luck with your plant - have you got high ceilings? I hope so! I have just planted a dwarf samoan coconut in the garden which is supposed to keep low enough to be able to pick the nuts easily. We have to hire climbers to harvest and trim our other trees. Best wishes, Jenny...See MoreIndoor coconut a twin to outdoor King palms..
Comments (5)I notice that it has turned a darker green-plus I tossed palm fertilizer on it (Ixora brand?)something I feared like death(for the palm-lol) itself,to do in winter,or even with all the cloudy spring days we had. Im starting to think I just might get a real trunking dwarfish coconut palm one day out of it....See MoreAdvice on indoor coconut.
Comments (4)Virginian- Thank you for weighing in. I actually had it outside the other day along with everything else. We hit 71 on Monday. I'm picking up piles of maple leaves and mulching my outdoor palms....See MoreIndoor cactus dying - help. White spots and wilting.
Comments (8)Austrocylindropuntia subulata is the accepted scientific name. Not sure what is meant by temporary leaves, IME they last for at least a year. Easy to grow; needs good drainage (is there drainage hole in your container?); substrate needs to dry up between watering. Less or no water in winter, try to keep at temps no lower than approx. 40*F (it will tolerate less, but has to be very dry). Needs good light as most succulents do, and will grow few trunks and branches. Easy to propagate from offsets. Your plant looks quite etiolated, it really needs more light. It should be 'chubbier', and stems/trunks should be able to support themselves and grow more upright. I wonder about those white specks on trunk?...See Moreorchiddude
