It smells heavenly at my house - images

I look forward to this every year. These roses throw such fragrance - WOW! I have no idea how to prune them (Gerry!), so they are scraggly now, but still so beautiful.

Just beautiful!

And isn;t the smell intoxicating? Every time I walk outside it almost bowls me over...

I have some old white roses. They came with my house 33 years ago. They have a fabulous aroma. Some peach colored roses have no aroma. The white ones have a huge number of thorns but are worth it for the fragrance. They almost seem to glow in the dark, too.

Other wonderful fragrance are viburnum in early spring and the star gazer lilies that will bloom soon. Ahh!

Pharaoh, that's lovely..When flowers wake u in the middle of the night, that is heavenly..(S) Several yrs ago, I bought a packet of 4 o'clocks at Jewel for .10. Got home and sprinkled the packet on the side of my house..I really didn't think they'd grow, but for ten cents, it didn't matter much..This was about 8-10 yrs back..Wouldn't u know it, these plants grew a little the first summer. By year two, there were at least 20 plants w/flowers..Like I said, they're growing on the side of my house..At night, when we're sitting in the LR, the scent permeates into our home..It smells fantastic. I also have a Murray growing in a container in the back yard..It's so fragrent. There were literally hundreds of flowers growing on it..when I'm in the kitchen the smell from these flowers scent up the kitchen..so right now my house smells like a nursery..LOL..I'll enclose of pic of my Murraya so you can get an idea of the flowers..Toni Here is a link that might be useful: RE: Heavenly experience!!

Thanks Rococogurl, I've heard about Vaska but haven't tried it yet! I agree Persil is the best at cleaning but too expensive for the amount of laundry I do. Also trying hard to find a good green detergent but I can't compensate for not having clean clothes!! Just curious what would happen when you used Vaska being that you have soft water? Before I tried caldera I tried Nellys and it didn't clean my clothes at all they looked clean but smelled like they weren't washed actually had a dirty laundry smell. Reviews for Nellys were mostly all great. Just strange how it works for some and others not good at all.

Is your water heater a gas unit? Your furnace? If it is, I might have a solution since my first house had this similar problem. I am also an electrician and I believe your problem is not electrically related. On windy days, I would encounter a downdraft through my chimney and through the hood of my gas water heater. Two problems here - occasional burning smell AND carbon monoxide. Make sure there is a functioning carbon monoxide detector in the areas of the house where you spend most of your time. If you call the fire department and/or the local gas utilities, they can check for elevated CO2 levels. These burning odors I encountered in my first house were in the colder months when I operated my upstairs fireplace and the damper remained open. Please let us know what you find!

The recurring theme here is that people call the non-emergency line and then are surprised when the fire department shows up with all their trucks anyway. But there is a good reason for this: People are frequently embarrassed to call the fire department and tend to minimize the problem when reporting it ("Oh, it's just a small fire on my stove that I can't quite get to go out; no real problem other than I can't breath right now"). By the time the fire truck rolls in a few minutes later, it turns out this was in fact a real problem and needed all the gear and tools that the firefighters have access to on their trucks. If the caller only reports the smell of smoke, it's quite possible there is nothing much to worry about. There also is the possibility that the moment somebody investigates and opens the door to where the fire has been smoldering for hours, air rushes in an a major fire starts within seconds. At that point, you really don't want to wait another 10 minutes for the trucks to roll in. You need them right then and there. I don't know about all jurisdictions. But in most cases that I am familiar with, the fire department will happily come out to you and investigate, even if it turns out to be "nothing". And you shouldn't get charged for it. But there always could be exceptions. Also, if they subsequently call an ambulance, that's when you might see charges.

My grandma grew those roses! They are THE BEST for fragrance. She just called them "Old Fashioned Roses" We now call them Grandma Judy roses. LOL! Enjoy them for me!

What kind of rose is that? They are beautiful. I'm also in Zone 5 (NEPA)and can't seem to keep roses over the winter. I'm always looking for something that doesn't need extensive overwintering care.

Beautiful! Mine are in bloom, too. It's too bad most of my roses are only two feet tall. I have such a hard time with winter die-back. I'd like to know what kind of rose it is as well - looks pretty hardy!

Wow, beautiful. I can almost smell them!

I definately need more fragrant roses. Knockout is reliable but has nothing in the smell department.... maybe I need to sneak into Gerry's yard and steal a few cuttings to jump start a rose collection -Jeanne, I might be stopping by your house too!

Jeanne,

Wonderful looking rose, not sure who 'she' is but would love to come by and get some cuttings. Pruning right after it blooms is best for the once bloomers.

Maybe you can post these pictures on the rose ID forum and get an idea of the name of it.

Funny you should say that....I just hacked them all, probably the wrong way, but they've survived me doing it before. They had gotten to a really bad point, and I had to do it. I still have some, so let me know when you have time.
Sue and I went by your place the other night on the way home from Dupont (only a little out of the way) and your yard looked really nice (what I could see - driving). She was drooling a bit, I think LOL.

Jeanne..... you were in Dupont and you didn't stop by!?? haha. Not that there's all that much to see here, but I do have a few perrenials still doing well and I just managed to finally get the container plantings planted. Now if I could only get the front beds planted I will be in good shape. This year's theme is coleus and cannas and bananas.... mostly because the coleus overwintered so well on the windowsill!
I decided I can't wait any longer for the tulips in the front bed to die back. I have to plant the coleus in the same spot so I'm going to just dig them up now and hope for the best. I should have just ripped them up after blooming as planned, but they did so well I'm going to save them for next year.
I guess I got greedy.

My daughter is playing softball in Dupont and I get to spend most Monday nights there. She has at least one double-header, too, so I have an extended visit! Woo hoo! LOL
I just left my tulips in the ground. Devil squirrels didn't bother them so I'm hoping for the same again. I haven't been able to be in the yard as much this year, for some reason, so not a whole lot is getting done. I have higher hopes for July. A plan might help, too. :)
