Nor'easter causing below normal temps

For those of us who live in the northeast, places like Boston, Phily and even Pittsburgh, it seems like we're being effected by a Nor'easter. This causes below normal temps and abundant rain. Average highs are way more likely to be below normal than they are above normal. Watch this from weather.com to better explain what's going on.

The Actinovate and BiotaMax are both products that contain beneficial fungi and bacterial that are intended to prey on the disease causing fungi and bacteria in the soil. Just as people eat yogurt, kefir, and buttermilk to re-establish beneficial gut bacterial to treat an upset stomach, these soil probiotics help plants fight off diseases. I keep trying to imagine the interactions between either of these with the Myco-Grow. It sort of reminds me of the old story of Satchel Page about a thermos bottle keeping liquids either hot or cold. "How to it know?" Part of my brains says the microbes in the Actinovate and BiotaMax will prey on the mycorrhizal fungi in the MycoGrow that we want to get established in the soil. On the other hand, the MycoGrow contains many of these same microbes in addition to the mycorrhizal fungi, so they must play well together. While I've already bored everybody besides you to sleep with the benefits of mycorrhizal fungi to a plant's roots, these other microbes play different but equally important roles in the health of the soil and plants. Just as lady bugs, lacewing larvae, and praying mantis come in like the calvary to eat the aphids, spider mites, and thrips, these soil probiotics fill a simlar role. They will kill off the bad bacteria and fungi that cause plant disease such as Damping off, Powdery Mildew, Verticillium, Fusarium, Black Spot, Rusts, Fire Blight, and Phytophthora root rots and blights. It's difficult to say anything for sure since the ingredients of the products don't give you any idea of how much of the microbes are included, only which ones are included. My hunch from reading over the info on all three products is that the Myco-Grow contains almost everything that is in both of the other two plus having the Mycorrhizal fungi. The Actinovate only has one strain of bacteria, so I'm guessing the BiotaMax will do more good than the Activovate. They don't say above "normal", they say above "average", there's a difference. And what they mean by average is most often the mean (Mean = sum of all values divided by the number of observations). So there are some days above the average and there are some days below average but it's still in the neighborhood of the average and that's all very very normal. At least I think it is. As long as I've been living here, spring-like weather only lasts about 2 weeks then it's just plain hot. But it makes the evening news a lot more addictive and interesting if terms are used that make the viewing audience panic just a little bit. What I'm wondering is why it doesn't rain here anymore.

fridge temperature fluctuation normal?

Wow! Thank you for your generosity and interesting discussion. (1) My fridge is a ABB2227. The manual does not say anything about the "normal" variation. "If the fridge is too warm, set the control down; if it is too cold, set it up"... Dah... (2) I typed my model number on the Web. I did not know there was a Amana community that has as a hobby the periodic thawing of our fridge... how fun... (3) A precision: I remove from my readings all the meal time since my vegetables and nuts are in there (the service guy told me that a fridge cannot hold a normal temperature if it is empty). No kids in the house to screw up my readings. My readings' variations cannot be explained by the door opening. This I am sure. (4) The board and sensor were changed when the fridge once again went up over 50 degrees last week. I got fed up and instead of doing the thawing routine all over again, I called the service guy. This is where our opinions go into different directions; he says that my fridge is now normal, but I think that something is still wrong because of the large temperature variation (but one good thing though, the temperature never went back to 50 degrees with the new board; the problem is that I don't have anymore the readings before the last problematic episode... this is where I kick myself; I should have kept them). Since the new board, the highest reading I got is around 45 degrees. (5) Tonight I opened the door and put an instant 3-sec thermometer in everything liquid that had spent a couple of days in the fridge and was not in the door (yes I also have one of those... I know; I may sound like a crazy thermometer woman by now...). The cup of water I put in yesterday night, the water the radishes were in, the 1-liter of milk, the water the celery was in... were all showing 40 degree readings. (6) I went through the study that was linked to. Very informative. They seem to think that 5 degrees is an acceptable upper limit and 5 C is 41 F. So maybe my stuff showing 40 degrees is all right despite the very large air temp variation. (I will go on and calculate my average and median over several days... I think that the median is more telling than the average... my stat husband reminded me that on average everybody is normal...). Where do I go from here: - Tonight before going to bed, I will put the control to 5 to see the impact it will impact. (I am just a bit afraid it will freeze my tender vegetables; I have periodic readings between 31 and 32 F, so I hope that it will get the upper limit down, but not the lower limit). - Since there is nothing in the manual, tomorrow I will call Amana and ask them what they consider a normal variation (but I have to admit that my hopes for a meaningful answer are not high). - In the next weeks (we do not live in the same city), I will go to my sister's home and test her "perfectly functioning" fridge, just to see if she has the same variation as I now have. Oh good grief, I grew up in Minnesota fer cryin' out loud, OF COURSE I have a low body temperature! Dotmom, I look at it this way, I have a budget of temperature and I just have to spread it out more than a lot of people.... that would make it lower! :) Back in my teens when I broke my hip I drove them crazy in the hospital. They couldn't believe my temp could be so low. "Must be a bad thermometer!" and they'd run off and get another. I had 8 or 10 thermometers lined up there. I tried telling them, but nurses don't like to listen, especially to a "kid". (And I have the utmost respect for the unheralded nurses, but there is a flaw in most.) BTW, I still have a couple of those thermometers around. Makes me laugh when I see all these people so paranoid over light bulbs having mercury in them. They don't think about thermometers, but that's a different group to offend!

This is the 2nd one to roll through recently. Fall/winter is usually Nor'easter time of the year but we have to blame a blocking High for this nuisance weather. Sigh.... It's a shame to complain when we had nice sunny somewhat average/warm days but we need our regular weather patterns back and not the feast/famine. :\

Abundant rain?? I don't know.... we are still really dry here, even with a scattered shower now and then. I need a day of steady rain to get down into the soil.
Even though my plants are wilting and grass is turning crispy, I feel funny standing around in long pants and a coat watering the garden!

I'm in your boat Kato. I'm just glad the temps cooled to reduce my watering. In spite of the showers we are dry here, and I've been fretting over keeping my recent transplants moist. Was working on weeds yesterday (in the rain) and was amazed to find the soil bone dry under the mulch.

It was supposed to rain all day yesterday.... again all we got was a passing shower. It was gone in an hour and dry enough for me to mow the lawn. My soil is also bone dry under the mulch.

I broke down and watered. Looks like the hostas have already expanded, everything else looks happier too. Tomorrow I may wash the car, that should do the trick and bring in some rain.

It was forecast to be partly sunny down here yesterday with a high near 70. But in reality It was overcast and lightly raining on and off all day and it barely cracked 60 (and that didn't happen until late in the day) with a chill-to-the-bone wind. Sun is out this morning finally.

I saw an interesting map on accuweather.com either yesterday or Wed. that showed what the precipitation trends had been during these rain events and they did show that all across the Northern tier counties of PA back into the upper Midwest, the precipatation was well below normal, where down here, into MD, and along the Jersey coast, it was above. This not a monthly but I believe for the last week or so.

This morning's Inquirer has an article on how cold it's been. It may wind up being the coldest May in 38 years!
I recall they said that March was also the coldest in 20 some years....

It's also going to more difficult to adjust to the hot weather when it finally arrives.

Thanks for the link paula! The high here in the city did reach I think 82 or 83 finally. I noticed that the local NWS forecast discussion for last night (repeated by the day shift this afternoon), had some interesting stats regarding the unusually low number of severe storms this month as well as citing some average temperatures over the past 11 years and doing some musing and speculation, based on past trends, about what might happen this summer. Since they change their forecast discussion pages over time and only archive a few iterations on the website, I'll quote those stats here:
