My garden in Michigan in the winter and summer.

Well I planted a 7 foot Windmill palm in the front of my house in April 2008. I told the wife that I would have to add some protection to it in the winter. Was not sure she knew what I was talking about. She was quite shocked back in late November when she came home. She was upset a little and thought it looked stupid. So did one of my neighbors who called the city of Roseville. They came out and asked what it was. I explained to the guy and he said there is nothing he can do to make me take it down. THANK GOD. The protection i built consists of some 4X2 with a plywood roof. The outside walls are just 1" foam insulation sheets. I bought a 16 foot water pipe heating wire and wrapped that up the trunk. Wrapped some burlap around that. Put a 10'X10' tarp over the tree. I turned on the heating wire on days or nights below 20F. Well as most of you know we are in the artic right now. Got kind of worried about forecasts of -10F at night. Went out and bought a ceramic heater for $35. and stuck that in the Palm House. Also bought a nice digital thermometer with a remote sensor. I wanted to see how cold it got in my box. Woke up Tuesday morning when it was -2F and was surprised when I saw 50F in the palm house. Over the next few nights the coldest it got in there was 42F on a -10F night. Glad to hear it is going to warm up next week. I am excited to be able to remove my Plam House in the spring.

Here are some pics of summer in front of my house and November after the Palm House was built.
