Right now Im buying lots of rare tropical plants. So far I got a Musella LAsocarpia (might b spelled wrong), a variegrated plumeria, a pepper tree (in the family piper, it has large green glossy leaves and red undersides), and a cup of gold vine (native to mexico, also grown in hawaii and in the miami botanical gardens (its pretty much grown in tropical regions)).
Im always on the look out for rare palms, but I usually by palms a lot more during the spring than in the winter. Usually I dont buy as much in the summer, just some filler plants, lots of soil and pots, some nice tropicals too, ect...

Good luck, I think that a majority of the country is due for a nice mid-winter warmup! Im really looking forward to the summer now more than ever.

NJoasis, where you putting all that stuff? Do you have a greenhouse?

I know that if for some crazy reason I do NOT end up moving to Florida (which should be occuring within the next year to year and 1/2) that I will absolutely HAVE to move to a place where I can install a sizable greenhouse. Heck, I may even put in a small one when I do go to FL for those rather rare freezes.

This is the one time of year(for the most part)that my pocket gets a break from buying plants because it's to cold to ship them.
I am occupying my time watching the weather,planting some rare Chamaerops seeds that are sprouting and keeping an eye on the outside protection and monitoring the numbers.
Usually I will go out into the cactus enclosure and have a look at things but everything is pretty locked down right now and is better off that way.
As far as I am concerned January is the last really cold winter month and we turn the corner once in February as the strength of the sun rapidly increases,then I can stand out in the yard and see how I'm going to fit everything!

For me I think Febuary is the most miserable month. We get very little sun with all the storms and the temps are just as cold as january (and in some cases a little colder). But you do start to see some warm ups which are nice, and in march everything really starts popping up and by april the trees are getting leaves, my plants are back outside (most of them anyway) and summer is finally coming! Im already thinking about where everything is going to go next summer, but I usually coem up with a plan and change it completely once I actually see how everything looks (and if there requirements are met) in there new spots.

I don't mind February actually.--January is the B////--as is currently being demonstrated across most of North America right now. Actually, my Citrus start blooming in February so that is encouraging. Yes, it is the snow month, but I love the light off all that snow on bright winter days. Nova, I have two garages--neither are for parking cars. The smaller is my tool/potting shed. The larger is a two-car loft garage. It faces directly south and the doors are half glass panels. There is small space heater (running overtime in this weather), but this holds a large subtropical collection (Canary dates that were grown from seed, oranges, lemons, kumquats, Sabal palms, orleanders, Cycads, Araucaria, non-hardy Yuccas, and the bananas (the bananas are largely dormant save for the Ensete and Basjoo). It's quite cold but frostfree. Eventually, I want to put a hot tub in the center. It gets me through the winter before the tropics really explode here!
