Winter doldrums : Dicentra cucullaria - Dutchman's breeches

I
was quite surprised to see the broad range of this delicate looking
spring ephemeral. Just don't blink or they will be gone. The first
time I saw these they were blanketing the forest floor, I went back a
week or two later and they were gone like they had never existed.

They
have found their way into the gardens and pop up around buildings.
These grow from a scaly bulb and the flowers are 5/8" wide
and 5/8" long. These pics were taken on April 17th.

They are cute! I saw these in wv several times, but they are ephemeral. We have several dicentra here in Oregon, and some are uncommon. One that does very well is dicentra formosa oregana. These are very un-dicentra: they bloom from April through September and can take full sun. They turn a lovely blue in hot sun and their flowers change from cream to pink as they age. I have mine in part shade because they seem to do better in my yard there... But this seed was collected from a full sun specimen.

Blue Cohosh, Bunchberry, Eastern False Rue Anemone -- I think mine are above ground all summer. Trout lilies, Virginia Bluebells, Dodecatheon -- really seem ephemeral, though the shooting stars may linger through most of the year, with the candelabra of seed pods still there till next spring. Dicentra -- my Dicentra eximia is not ephemeral, but not sure about your species. Wild Leek -- leaves disappear, but round onion flower and seeds are there in the last summer-fall.

Shapiro, Can I ask what they looked like when they came up? I tried growing some from seed last year and after no success I threw the seeds into the garden and hoped for the best. Now I see something is coming up in the spot where I think I threw the seeds, I'm wondering if this could be them? Mine look sort of like a bleeding heart leave except less pointed.
