Hey guys! I'm going on vacation next week and I know you all like to read. I was looking for a list of books I should check out for the trip. I know one of you has written a book but I don't know the title. I own Carrots Love Tomatoes. I like Michael Pollan. What other types of things should I look for? TIA!

How about something like "The Truth About Garden Remedies what works, what doesn't and why". By Professor of Horticultural Science, Jeff Gillman....Oh yes, you also might want to lighten up a bit so how about the best in mysteries: Agatha Christie's Miss Marple series (or any other of her detectives, Miss Marple just happens to be my favorite).

You may just want gardening books and I dont know your reading tastes, but I love reading about the pioneering women who came before.

One I really liked was Joanna Stratton's Pioneer Women.

Jodik says: The coir might look dry on top, but down in the center of the pot, it could be quite moisture-laden! I have found it helpful to insert little wooden skewers carefully into the soil to about root level, and leave them there... I take them out and press them against my cheek to test for dampness... if they feel at all damp, I wait to water... but if the skewer comes out dry, it's time to water. My coir is 4" deep in a closed pot. I put the skewer to the bottom of the pot. When I take it out how many inches of bone dry top "soil" should there be before it's time to water again? Is it 1", 2" or 4"? I just went 10 days without water and only 1" of the top was dry so am I supposed to water this direct sun pot once every two weeks or so to avoid over watering, really? And how much water for my 6" closed pot? I had been watering 1 1/2 cup or so once a week and my plant was fine but I'm now worried that was too much so I'm re-evaluating. I know what conventional wisdom says (water deep, not shallow) but that advice doesn't seem to apply to my situation. Also how long should it be before I see new leaf growth in the summer time (first season outside)? My 18 month old Red Lion so far has only grown new leaves once a year. At potting and at dormancy end.

Now that I have learned to grow citrus with no problems I have 3 Poncirus trifoliata of grafting size and 4 sweetlee tangerine trees of vigor that will be graft-able next spring. That's 7 root-stocks that I can graft my twigs from the grafted tree I can purchase. My purchased tree will grow faster by waiting a year and will out grow anything I bought a year earlier. My decision is to not buy a grafted tree and to grow what I have. If it fruits, great If they don't. Well we'll see My from seed Nagami kumquat for grafting to poncirus trifoliata Seed grown Meiwa kumquat tree. The tree fruit I am interested in. To be grafted on to the poncirus trifoliata moots through the Nagami inter-stock. May also go directly to my sweetlee tangerine tree root-stock, Seed grown sweetlee tangerine tree for root-stock #1 Seed grown sweetlee tangerine tree for root-stock #2 Seed grown sweetlee tangerine tree for root-stock #3 Seed grown sweetlee tangerine tree for root-stock #4 Seed grown poncirus trifoliata to be grafted on Is posted above . Its in a blue 55 gallon half drum. This completes what I have done and what I have. I have the 36" Miele. You can keep the pan off the hob for 3 minutes before it turns itself off, and it doesn't beep but it does flash. I am also a messy stirrer and it doesn't turn it off, nor does a 'slight' boilover. I haven't had a major boilover yet--I've learned not to walk away from it if it's on high, because whatever is on the stove will boil quickly and then I just turn it down to simmer. What DOES turn it off immediately and makes it beep like mad is if you cover up the controls, be it with a towel or a pan. It does not mind being cleaned, though--a quick swipe is fine and does not cause beepage. As to "keep warm", setting 2 or 3 will do that nicely, depending on how much food is in the pan you want to keep warm. 1 is not enough to keep a hot pan of something hot, but it will melt your chocolate nicely without a Bain Marie. If you turn on your burner, it comes on at level 6. You can reset this if you wish to anything you want. The Miele is highly configurable--you can reset a lot of the factory settings to your liking, including how many levels there are, how loud the beeps are, etc. As for Boost, there is power sharing. The two burners on the right are a pair, the two on the left are a pair, and the one in the middle is on it's own. You may use Boost on one in each pair, and in the middle...for a total of 3 burners at any given time. I've had my Miele for about 8 months and love it. Cj

As far as gardening books go - my brother just brought me Ruth Stout's No-Work Garden Book to read. If you haven't read it it's an older book and Mrs. Stout gardened by mainly mulching everything, using no chemicals, no tilling, etc. It is a very good book - it has sure made me think about all the work I do in my garden and makes me wonder if I need to do everything that I'm currently doing. If you haven't read Barbara Kingsolver's excellent "Animal, Vegetable, Miracle", I'd suggest it. It chronicles her family's move from Arizona to the Appalachia region where they live on a rural farm and attempt not only to grow and produce as much of their own food as possible, but also decide they will "eat locally" for one year by purchasing all their food from local producers, farmers, at the farmer's market, etc. Her husband, Stephen Hopp, and her teenage daughter, Camille Kingsolver, co-author the book with her and it is wonderful. It blends together family life, gardening, cooking, raising chickens and turkeys, and information about why it is important to live/eat/garden sustainably. It includes recipes for whichever foods are fresh and available during the season. I loved this book and found it quite inspiring.

I'll second Dawn's suggestions for "Animal, Vegetable, Mineral." You might also consider "Eat, Pray, Love" by Elizabeth....? The author is going through a really rough time at the beginning of the book. She travels to Italy (Eat), India (Pray) and Indonesia (Love). It basically is a journey of searching for balance in life- with the excesses of pleasure and discipline explored along the way. I picked it up and stayed up too late a few days in a row in order to finish it. I also found a book "Not Eating Out in New York City". A blogger decides not to eat out for a year, then two while living in New York City. Kind of explores the connections between people and food and the pleasure of creating your own meals.

Animal, Vegetable, Miracle is a perfect combination of good reading and a subject you'll enjoy. Great vacation reading.

Any of Bill Bryson's books are a hoot, but I especially enjoyed "A Walk in the Woods" about the Appalachian Trail. Make sure you read it where you won't feel silly laughing out loud and having tears running down your face.

If anyone is interested in history, as well as running, my husband just finished "Born to Run: A Hidden Tribe, SuperAthletes, and The Greatest Race the World Has Never Seen". He highly recommends it. I just haven't gotten to it yet. Spring and summer is not my reading season.
