Roses for Zone 5 sometimes 6

Anyone have any personal experience with roses that do well in zone 5 (sometimes 6 with our last mild winters)? How long have you been growing them, etc.?

I am looking for climbers and shrub roses; preferably something I won't have to be spraying or worrying about bugs damaging all the time.

I have The Fairy, Bonica and Carpet Rose now that do well without much attention. I am getting to be a lazy gardener. (GRIN) My old Blaze rose that was here when we moved to this place in 1997 has about succumbed to that rose disease where the leaves ball up, etc. Don't remember what it is called. I think that is what happened to it.

I am kind of new to gardening but I do have some roses that did very well through the winter last year. I will give you a list of everything that I had though last winter

Kordes Perfecta, it didnt even slow it down, barely any pruning required. I think it was made in Germany so the cold dont bother it.

Her Magisty- That one did have a little pruning after the winter but is doing fine

Blue girl- It fared about as well as Her Magisty

Knock out roses- They are animals lol, they grow FAST and you cant kill them, or I havent been able to. My dog has even ran through them and broken a few branches off and they keep growing like nothing happened. I have 10 of them and they are a mass of color. I am going to plant the blushing knockout roses this year.

You mentioned flower carpet roses, yep they did very well, I didnt loose a one last winter.

JP baby blanket tree rose. One of mine did great, the other one, up and died. It had already had leaves and everything and just died. I dont know why or if the winter had anything to do with it.

This year I planted a HUGE amount of hybrid teas and Grandiflora roses, and a few English roses. Maybe next spring I can give you a bigger list of what survived the winter.

Thanks for the suggestions. I will check them out. I read lots of good reports on the KnockOuts.

Do you find fall or spring planting best?

Dcrosby, You may be right at the edge of zone 5/6. Check the map here. If you are still zone 5, you just need to do some winter protection. It should be fine. Climate affects disease susceptibility. In dryer, more arid climate like AZ or CA, they don't have to deal with fungal disease like we do here in humid East Coast. When you read people's recommendations, you want to see where they live. Different climate gives different results to the same rose variety. Spraying for roses every week or every two weeks is not my kind of fun (anymore). I didn't even want to smell the blooms after I sprayed the bushes. Now I don't spray, most of my roses esp. Austins look naked by mid summer. Wow, Anne. I got to check out Dorothy Perkins, a fantastic once-bloomer that occasionally has a tiny bit of rebloom and is zone appropriate 4b and upward. The once-bloomer Turner's Crimson was also very lively. These must be great weepers/standards, I love their photos on HMF. Unfortunately I didn't know at the time that my hybrid tea tree roses I chose were actually zone 7b and they had fragile genes as well. But the great thing was that they bloomed like crazy no matter the condition of their foliage. I think the major difference is that the Burlington tree roses spend the winter in the greenhouse where there is light and warmth and can be carried back & forth. Mine stayed in the dungeon of my garage with no light and they were not carried back and forth if we ever got a warmer break in the weather. Not that this would have helped that much because our winter remained record-breaking cold anyway. But even a little bit of light and fresh air in February through March might have helped the tree roses a lot! Instead I waited until it was "safe" to bring them out. But I also think that non-stop rains are detrimental to my tree roses. The canker always starts right at the bud-union and spreads upwards on the stem or simultaneously down to the bud union and it always occurs when we get slammed with flooding rainstorms. This drives me crazy! If the canker had started on the upper portion of the stems, it would be a piece of cake to solve (you can easily prune and cut). But invading the bud union from the get-go is absolutely maddening! Next year when I restart my tree roses I will definitely carry them in and out of the garage more frequently and I will also start my severe pruning in winter instead of waiting until Spring. Veilchen, I checked David Austin's tree roses but the only ones they had were Austins and not the Old Garden Roses. Maybe one of these days David Austin will carry them perhaps? that would be nice.

Magice Meidland Rose - zone 4, 5 or 6.

This is one of my favorite of the meidiland series. We're a zone 7, but it should be pretty hardy in at least 5 & 6. Even though the bloom is small, the colors in it are beautiful. The yellow & white in the center of the bright pink really catch the eye.

It's in an alley along a fence. You want something vicious that requires very little maintenance and is disease free. But unless you want to be bothered with quite a bit of pruning (which won't be fun) and tying up to the fence (which won't be fun either) I would stay away from the ramblers such as New Dawn, Dr. W. van Fleet, Alberic barbier, etc. These will climb, but left on their own will also sprawl all over, including the alley. I would use something that will stand up on its own without a lot of help and can just be sheared back from the alley when necessary--eglantyne, rugosa, and a number of others mentioned here should do fine. One also has to consider the quality of soil in an alley -- likely not the greatest. We assume you have sun, but sweet briars will do fine in considerable shade. A modern rose that will keep blooming, stand-up on its own, and is quite thorny,large and tall, over six feet, is Austin's The Pilgram, a yellow rose, that some think to be the most handsome and best of all the Austin roses, but alas it won't be as bullet proof as the sweet briars or rugosas, will require more water during droughty periods, and can get a little blackspot. It also requires more fertilizer to be at its best. I'd stick with the species and near species roses.

I will tell you the story of my Knock Out roses. I dont think it matters when you plant them things, this is why.

I got mine about this time last year, maybe a little later than this time last year. Yes I know thats late for planting roses.

They were on clearance at Lowes and looked like they were dead. They costed a whole dollar a pot so I figured what do I have to loose? If they die, then I loose nothing. I got 10 of them and planted them with the cow poop/humus mix from they sell at Walmart and just watered them and gave them mirical grow every week or so. I also pruned off anything that looked dead and just mulched them, and thats it. They grew a lot last year, but this year, they have really taken off. They are really amazing and bloom like crazy. I have kids and dogs and a cat that loves to sleep under them and they just shrug it all off. They were so easy to grow I think you could just throw them at the ground and they would take off LOL.

They are awesome with blackspot too. None of them have ever gotten blackspot, I fight blackspot non stop with most of my roses but them Knock Outs never seem to get it. I am going to get some of the new blushing Knock outs, I just love the color.

Thanks for replying--they sound easy enough to grow and I like the idea of no Black Spot!!
