Thanks for posting the pics. I'm surprised there are so many palms in Little Rock. Never would've guessed that. Question though...What has your low temp been so far this winter? I see flowers still alive and in bloom in a few of the pics. Seems strange to see in the middle of winter, especially in Arkansas.

Thanks for the comments so far. More and more palms are starting to be planted around the Mid-South and Little Rock is no exception. Back in 2003 when I started growing hardy palms, it was very hard to find a windmill palm in the city. Now, more nurseries are carrying them in all sizes. Now, even commercial landscapes are incorporating them. Maybe the word is out about how nice windmill palms are and how easy they are to grow.

These are the low temps that I've recorded over the last few years. Let me point out that the palms are not in any special microclimates and are fully exposed to the elements.

What you actually see in the pics are ripe seeds from the flowers that opened in late spring.

The "flowers" you see in the pics, assuming you mean the ones on the ground, and NOT the seeds in the palms themselves, are Pansies, most likely the winter pansies. They bloom all winter long, and generally die off when the heat of spring/ summer returns. They thrive in "refrigerated" type of climates, surving even severe freezes. I have some planted outside, and they have been frozen solid to the point where, when you touch them, the feel like ceramic, and they do fine. they just thaw out , and keep on truckin and bloomin! Now I dont think they can withstand that kind of freeze for an extended period though. Im not sure how far north they are planted for the winter, but I do know they are very commonplace here in the Mid Atlantic area (philly/balt/dc/ric) They are one of the few things that are garanteed to bloom and provide color throughout the winter.

Awesome pics. I cant wait until the DC area catches on, and they start getting used here even in "public" plantings or at hotels and such. They seem to survive here just great as well.

we have pansies here too,some in the ground,some not(-;

I was referring to the pansies, but i did notice the seeds/flowers on the palms as well. The seeds didn't surprise me. I had a huge sabal minor in the ground that had seeds on it in the middle of January. What surprised me is that the pansies are still alive there. I had no idea they were that hardy. I assumed they died back in the mid 20s.

I have seen those little suckers alive underneath the snow,they are pretty dang hardy!

I grow pansies here in Detroit Area and every year they make it through the roughest of winters as long as they are away from salted roads/drives.

In the early spring they still have blossoms. I live in the hilly - lakes area N and W of Detroit where we have much more snow than Downriver. They sell pansies at many markets including Walmart, Meijers, Home DePot, etc.

BTW, I hope my Windmill Palm makes it. It is covered in 1 foot cylinder of leaves and covered with plastic.

Yes, in the south pansies bloom and flower all winter. We typically have warmer weeks and then colder weeks. These plants freeze and thaw constantly in the winter, but they don't care. Pansies provide great color all winter for our location. Palms and pansies...who would have thought, right?

Yeah, those suckers (pansies) are fantastically hardy. Its 18F here now. Mine are in small window boxes, and they have been fine each year.

Its funny though, right NOW, they are hard, and ceramic like. I just tried to bend a leaf and it broke like glass, but it did seem slightly "soft" in the "middle" if u know what I mean. LOL! IT amazes me that those things can freeze solid like that, and still keep truckin right along!

I hope those trachys surive the next couple nights. ITs going to be a big test for all the Trachys in the DC area for sure, with lows tonight of 8-12, and tomrrow night of 5-10F! BRRRRR YUK! I want spring!

Nova you might want to mound some mulch or wrap some insulation around those roots the next few nights,just a thought,hate to see you lose that sucker,I mean palm(-;

Lots and lots of trachys in and around our area too .
It's good to see people trying to grow palm trees around here !
