Oooooh my aching joints

My husband and I enjoyed Saturday and Sunday working in the yard. Still only touched the surface but what we did accomplish looks so nice. Saw lots of green shoots and that is such a welcome sight. I hope to continue a bit every time it is decent enough outside. I may be rushing the season slightly but so what. With everthing in this world so messed up, my 2 days in the garden planted seeds of joy and potential (in my garden world anyway). Gardening is better than pills. Hope we weren't the only ones getting some fresh air and exercise.

I trimmed the butterfly bushes in back. I use them as a feeding area for the white-throated sparrows and cardinals during the Winter so I left the cuttings on the ground. The birds approved of my work.

Not much but I readied the 3 birdhouses too. If it is nice on Wednesday, I will take the berries off my Winterthur viburnums in front and rake the leaves from the plants. I have a lot of trimming to do this Spring.

i too cleaned up and was thrilled to see a group of crocus in bloom, considering just the week before we had several inches of snow. also, all the tulips and daffs are pushing up the green.

i have been out and about any day there was a hint of decent weather to get a head start. i have (terrible) neighbors that allow all their weeds and bushes and whatnot to grow out of control and over the fence and it all comes creeping into my vegetable garden. i finally put my foot down and told them they have to clean it. (i wouldn't mind if it was something decent, but it's ivy and junk).

the veggie garden is the last area i have to clean up and will be getting it done this week. i make sure i don't over-do it, although i spend hours out there, but top it off with a good long soak in the tub.

i already have many seeds started that i wintersowed and yesterday i would see some of the jugs have sprouts.

spring is certainly in the air. gardening is indeed, one of the best remedies for whatever ails ya!

I'm going to tackle the front flower bed this weekend. I plan to plant White Inpatients all along the walk leading to the front door. Red Inpatients all around both Live Oak trees and Multi-colored Caladiums in the front flower bed in front of my Azaleas. Now that I'm an older girl, 55 this June, I let a gardener mow, edge, and trim the trees and hedges. I save all my energy for just this kind of week end plant play, but I'm not the only hunch-back that limps back to work on Monday, there are a lot of us saying Oh my aching back!

this may help, see attached pic. I use hardcast brand 1402 mastic tape, and use it in many places. this is a good strong tape that has a long life. even at $30 per roll (3" wide 100') it is a good deal. personally I hate to have to go back & re-do... so over the years, this is my only tape to use. invest in this tape and you'll only seal once. as you can see from the pic, the sealing is done from inside the house, much easier than working from attic side. the pic is from an existing home... but as long as sheetrock is up...you'll want to do this for recessed light cuts in sheetrock & bath fans. stove vents..anything that penetrates into attic space. if all zip seams are sealed, sole plate is sealed to slab/subfloor, windows & doors are properly flashed & sealed...then look to ceiling for leakage. thermal bypasses like fireplace openings in attic that are not sealed at attic floor. dropped ceilings, and any holes cut into ceilings. builders do good with making walls air tight, but trades people cut holes in ceiling, this is the air barrier to the attic. holes in ceiling will suck attic air into living space, so sealing these holes & creating as perfect as possible air barrier is the goal. and don't sweat it if you can't get it all done during construction. I can pretty much walk you through sealing methods during or after home is completed. I'l have to check out JLC article later. what I tell my clients is to tell sheetrock crew that no ceiling moldings are being installed. this way they tape & seal the wall/ceiling joints. air tight drywall approach...even just to google it will show you lots of ways to seal. here in the south...we don't gasket much or caulk sheetrock to studs...but in cold climates these methods are more of an issue. kudos to you for putting ductwork inside cond space...this is such a great thing to do...I wish arch/designers would incorporate this in every new home. my analysis show I have a 25% energy savings by putting my ducts in furdowns in the cond space. I meant to ask earlier...where are you located?? best of luck.

Omg! All these sound like me! My body started aching everywhere in January. Along with hot flashes and night sweats. I tried hrt which made every thing swell in about 3 days. And I couldn't breath. Smile stopped. Progesterone cream, borage oil, maca root powder and now menopause took away moodiness, hot flashes and sweats. But now I ache like crazy. I workout 2x a day, eat a pescatarian diet and feel like I'm 80! Just bought glucosamine today. My doctors as given me 20 different tests and is stumped and that's annoying. Last week Lyme disease and valley fever. I've also gained 42 pounds, which makes me so uncomfortable. I'm so tired of this. It's nice to see others in the same situation. Although its sad.

I'm sorry you're going through all this. I've had a lot of health issues since I was in my mid 20s so I know how tough it is. I'm almost 60 so I've dealt with this for over half my life. One thing I have and I think it's more common than people think is low magnesium levels. Doctors don't recognize this as they only check blood serum magnesium levels that will always be high as the body pulls magnesium from the bones to keep the blood levels up so you don't have a heart attack. Instead, they need to check the cellular magnesium level to diagnose low magnesium. There are over 300 functions magnesium is needed for in the body including relaxing muscles and removing lactic acid from them. I've had severe myofascial pain since I was 15 years old, and had every sort of pain in almost every part of my body that couldn't be diagnosed. Fortunately I stumbled on a book on the subject years ago, and have been able to control my pain doing trigger point massage. Everyone has myofascial pain from time to time. I put in work on Saturday...clipping off all the Helleborus orientalis leaves, debris pickup, some tree pruning, just a start to all that needs to get done. I keep myself pretty fit all year, so it's not so much being active outside, but the stooping and bending are what got me sore on Sunday...ooooohh , Advil to the rescue.

My big project this spring is clearing brush out of a narrow strip of woods that runs 500' along the front of our property. Lots of bending down to clip multi-flora rose stems, ripping their canes out of the tree branches, pulling down grapevine, collecting downed wood and restacking the stone wall. Oh, and of course, moving the compost pile. Again.

No wonder it's taken me 9 years to get around to this project. My back is killing me!

Another backache... today I'm dividing yucca and replanting it in drifts in the newly-cleared woods. Not exactly a native plant, but I can't turn up my nose at any structural deer-resistant evergreen. Plus, it's free.

I sure start the gardening year off vigorously, but always run out of gas around July 15th. August and September are spent watching the weeds grow.
