Where to buy clove currant shrub?

Hello -- I'm Dorice from Norman as I'm sure you can tell by my user name. This year I'm really wanting to plant some clove currants (Ribes odoratum) but I don't want to order from a catalog. Has anyone seen them for sale anywhere, ever? Okie Dawn, I think you've said you have some in your 'yard'. I've been listening in for quite awhile and certainly enjoy you guys on this forum -- you sure know your gardening stuff.

Dorice, have you tried O'Higgins or a HD or Lowe's in Norman. There's also a really good nursery out on I-35 at the Goldsby exit, called Marcum's. You could call them and see if they are carrying them.

Hi Dorice,

I got mine many years ago at the annual Native Plant Sale at the Heard Natural Science Museum in McKinney, Texas. I bought it in 1999 or 2000.

If you don't find it in the typical nursery, you might want to try a nursery that specializes in native plants.

I just love mine. When it is blooming it scents the whole yard. I hope you are able to find one.

Everybody can read it for themselves. It is very clear no black currants are allowed in RI. As it appears many nurseries read it like I do. Including Raintree, Burpee, and Henry Fields. None of these nurseries will ship black currants to RI. The other rules are for other species of Ribes. it appears flowering currants are also banned. Three species of currants are named and banned. Red currant is not named Ribes rubrum. White and pink are also Ribes rubrum. They are sports of the red. Rubrum is not banned I agree. It is restricted though. What you quote is an area no currants are allowed. Ribes species other than Ribes nigrum L, Ribes aureum and Ribes odoratum can be grown. You can't ignore the clear statement I quoted. Well I guess you did. I really have nothing else to say on the subject. The document speaks for itself. I side with the nurseries on this one. We can agree to disagree. Everybody can read it if they care and make their own minds up what it says, If I was you, I would keep growing them, just pull if they become diseased. Even though we can grow rust resistant blacks in MI. I'm hesitant to do so. I have 12 currant plants or so, they are all Ribes rubrum. No blacks. Now with this article 'I'm even more apprehensive. I would like to try, but man, we have a lot of white pine around. I'm still up in the air, I may grow them in the future. OK - now I know the OP is in Europe I would say it could well be BRV. If you study unopened leaf buds are any of them large and swollen? This is where the mites live. Google Big Bud Mite. In future patrol your black currants in Winter and rub off any spherical buds.I also think that in Croatia it might be a bit hot in Summer for black and red currants, especially up against a wall. Are their roots getting into the mortar foundation for the wall? I think they'd be happier in a moister, shadier spot away from any walls. Blacks in particular are greedy bushes and like deep rich ground at their feet. If either black or red currants are flopping there is something wrong. Both should be sturdy self supporting shrubs with stiff branches and twigs. They should not need any support.

I'll second Scott's comments about Poorman. I've had no disease problems with it and the plant is vigorous. Mine is in full sun. The fruit is excellent, though as Scott says it is not as productive as other varieties. Many gooseberry varieties will sweeten up if you leave them on the plant long enough, but many people use them before they are sweet for pies etc., where they taste somewhat like rhubarb. Whitman farms should tell which varieties are best for fresh eating ('desert' varieties). Gooseberries are prone to mildew, and if you are in a humid climate you would be advised to get mildew-resistant varieties. They also suffer other diseases. Invicta is prone to a leaf spot disease. My gooseberries suffer some sort of insect damage, maybe gooseberry sawfly. I have found that it is imperative to net gooseberries if I am to get fruit. Given their thorns, this is easier said than done. It might make sense to make a cage around them over which you can place netting or shade cloth once the fruit start to develop. I have found black currants somewhat easier to grow here in humid Maryland than red currants, though red currants make a sublime jam or jelly. As with gooseberries, it is wise to select varieties resistant to mildew if you live in a humid climate. Although currants and gooseberries do not grow well from seed, they do grow extremely well -- especially currants -- from cuttings. If you buy a currant plant with well developed stems, you will want to cut these down before planting, but don't throw away the cuttings. Simply put them in the ground with a few buds above ground, keep them moist, and you will very quickly have new plants. Most varieties of gooseberries are very thorny. If planted as bushes they have a tendency to have branches that brush against the ground. If I were planting more gooseberries, I would probably try growing them as standards -- that is, as plants with a single stem of a couple of feet above which are the branches. With adequate moisture and temperature (see below), roots emerge and leaves sprout, and the plant goes through a period of vegetative growth. With the onset of winter, the plant undergoes vernalization (induced to bulb and flower) by low winter temperatures. * Although vernalized, no inflorescence or lateral buds (that later form the bulb) are developed until early spring with the onset of lengthening days and suitable temperatures. Proper bulbing is a function of adequate growth, vernalization, and subsequent growth under long days. Some temperate-region varieties may be adapted to spring planting because the long photoperiod of northern temperate regions are adequate, even if only minimal cold treatment has occurred. The degree of bulbing and flower stalk formation varies considerably and with genotype. From a flowering standpoint, three classifications are reported: 1. Non-bolting types. These do not form flower stalks, or do so only rarely. Only primary cloves form (as in strains of California Early and California Late). 2. Incomplete bolting types. These usually produce a flower stalk, the terminal of which (the bulbils) often remains enclosed in the pseudostem. Some of these types form a second set of cloves within the primary cloves, and may be confused with non-bolting types. 3. Complete bolting types. These bolt readily, producing a scape that terminates in an inflorescence containing sterile flowers and topsets (bulbils). The relationship between temperature and photoperiod is complex and variety dependent. Generally, a photoperiod longer than a critical value is the main factor inducing storage leaf formation after a period of cold treatment. Also, the longer the cold treatment, the shorter the critical photoperiod required for storage leaf induction (and subsequent bulb formation). A garlic bulb develops from the bud primordia (2 or 3) of the cloves that are planted. Each bud primordia forms between two and six growing points, each of which develops a lateral bud which later develop into a clove. Temperatures during growth determine the rate of leaf growth, clove, and flower stalk development. Clove formation in non-bolting types differs slightly in that lateral-bud primordia (which form the cloves), form in the axil of the youngest 6-8 foliage leaves, beginning with the oldest one. At maturity, these develop into cloves. The growing point may then either form a clove and go dormant, or form an incomplete leaf that degenerates. A garlic bulb can therefore be best described as an aggregate of cloves surrounded by a sheath consisting of the basal portions of one or more mature dry leaves. Each clove consists of a vegetative bud and two modified mature leaves. The inner of these two leaves forms a thickened base that makes up the clove. The base of the outer leaf forms the dry sheath surrounding the clove. The blades of both these leaves abort just above the clove. The vegetative bud is imbedded in the clove and consists of one or two leaf initials. CLIMATIC REQUIREMENTS Garlic grown in temperate regions such as the Pacific Northwest is responsive to temperature and photoperiod for proper clove and bulb formation (and subsequent seedstalk development of some varieties). Varieties adapted to southern latitudes, that bulb under the temperature and short day conditions common to those latitudes, may not bulb or segment properly in the Pacific Northwest. With varieties such as California Early and California Late, a period of cold exposure is needed for proper bulbing and clove development. That cold treatment is thought to be about 6 to 8 weeks of a mean temperatures below 40 F but may be considerably shorter with some strains. Garlic may be sensitive to a cold treatment range of between 32 and 50 F and is sensitive either during growth or while the cloves are in storage. Photoperiod interacts with temperature so that cloves held in cold storage will bulb quickly when planted in spring (increasing photoperiod) resulting in small bulbs. Bulb and clove size is related to the amount of vegetative growth that takes place before bulb and clove initiation occurs. This determines optimum clove storage temperature, planting date and associated growing temperatures and changing day length. Cloves exposed to adequate cold treatment may have a reversion of vernalization under water stress and high temperatures (above 85 F) so normal bulbing does not occur. The longer the cold treatment, however, the more difficult it is to devernalize the plants. Also, plants that are growing rapidly with good soil moisture are less susceptible to devernalization." Normansooner, the easiest way to get Clove Currant without going through mail order is to find someone with it growing in their yard, and ask if you can dig up a sucker. That's how I got mine, and I've since planted suckers of suckers in two different homes now. I'd offer you a one myself, but daughter's goats got them last year and took them down to the ground. They recovered, and even bloomed this spring, so you know they're survivors. they other name is Buffalo Currant; don't know if that means the Buffalo ate the berries, or the shrub,or if the fruits go well with buffalo meat. :^)

I know people do grow it in Norman; not in the fancy brick additions, but you can usually find some planted in those crowded neighborhoods of little single story frame houses that are probably 50 years old.

It's not something I would expect to see at any big box store, even if they have a really cool manager in the garden center who likes to try new things, because it's not common in "the trade". They can't sell what they can't find. I did see that Lowe's in Norman was carrying Arrowood Vibirnum, and Itea Henry's Garnet and Little Henry, if you're looking for other natives.

Oaklief,

Clove currant is hardy to zone 4 and is native in many parts of the country, so I think it would grow just fine for you there in the Ozarks.

Mine is in unimproved sandy-clayey soil just outside my vegetable garden. It gets at least 8 hours of sun a day.

It is not necessarily the first plant to flower in the springtime, but it certainly is the most aromatic.

It suckers, so put it someplace where it has room to grow, or you can, of course, dig up the suckers and put them someplace else.

It is a very hardy plant. Once it is established, it is quite drought tolerant.

I got my 'Little Henry' itea virginica years ago and Warren's in Midwest City. Too bad they went out of business and were purchased by O'Higgins. O'Higgins doesn't carry near the variety of plants, shrubs, and trees that Warren's did. I love my little itea because it grows in my partially shady backyard. Right now it is full of blooms.

Marilyn Stewart and her hubby, Ken, own Wild Things Nursery and they sell native plants at Farmer's Markets and other locations around the state. Here is the remainder of their schedule this year:

Just wanted you to know that I purchased a clove currant at the sale yesterday out at Harn Homestead. They were $4 in a big ole quart pot. To me these look like 6" pots. They were on sale marked down from $7.

It was an "impulse" purchase, so I didn't know much about it. Things were so hectic there, I didn't have time to ask Ken or Marilyn much about any of the plants. They had so many newcomers to butterfly/wildlife gardening, that their time was pretty much compromised.

I looked it up on the net when I got home, and it seems in order to produce fruit, I need a male AND female. I have no idea which sex I purchased since people don't often know, until they are blooming, or whatever, which sex they have.

Dawn, or anyone else who knows, how will I know what I have so I can then purchase the one I don't?

I have no clue how to tell the male from the female ribes odoratum. Since I was purchasing the plant for the lovely scented flowers, I was not concerned about whether I had a male or female. When I see them being sold, the tag usually only has Ribes Odoratum, Clove Currant, on it and does not specify male or female. I don't know if it is possible to purchase this plant as either a labeled female or male, or if it is just the luck of the draw.
