Woodland Phlox - phlox divaricata

My woodland phlox is blooming right now and if I could find my camera, I would take a picture. I just love this plant. I think I have the native variety. I got the original plant in a trade long ago so I don't have any way to know whether it was native or reseeded from a cultivar. I'd have more if it weren't for having to pull stumps out of our shade garden after the ice storm in '07 and my careless Roundup spraying one year. I still have three clumps and they look better than last year so maybe it's recovering and will reseed around again. I tried to divide off a few little pieces to transplant and I'm hoping they will take.

I came across a link that said 'Blue Moon' is supposed to be the most fragrant cultivar. Has anyone grown that one or other cultivars?

Christie, I have several clumps of the native which was growing in our woods when we moved in. With two little girls in the house they didn't get much chance to selfseed for years, but during the last ten years they have really spread, both naturally and with help from me. So if yours aren't picked in the flower stage, they should seed for you.

I don't know anything about the Blue Moon cultivar.

I could have sworn I replied to this. I guess I'm losing my mind.

Anyway, does the fragrance waft? I'd like something that wafts for my shade garden.

My experience with Phlox Divaricata is that it is a small, very slow growing and slow multiplying sweet perennial. I think it would look nice next to hostas and would do well planted with daffs. I would imagine the phlox would go dormant after blooming and the hot temps and dryer weather sets in. I seldom see mine after it blooms, but it is in the (wild) woods. pete- the ipheion is not native to the u.s. i have been growing it for many years and the only time it has moved is when i divided the clumps and transplanted. i recently went to tuskegee, al, and saw a few lawns full of it down there. these were old plantation-style homes so it may spread about over a long period of time but i have not noticed it on our invasive species lists. in fact, i don't know whether it was intentionlly planted in those lawns there or has naturalized. the flowers are fragrant but the bruised foliage smells like onions. just lettin' ya know.

I was wrong. I looked for info again on 'Blue Moon' and it was 'Blue PERFUME' that's supposed to be the most fragrant instead. Looking on Google, I didn't see anyplace that I've ever ordered from that carries it. There might be newer cultivars since that article was written.
It would be a pretty big stretch to say mine wafts but maybe one of the named cultivars would.
