Except now it seems that lawn equipment has to have these ooshy-swooshy designer lines where it's hard to tell where the deck stops and the shroud begins. Yes, I'm a nut also. My friends and neighbors openly remind me of that. If I hadn't found this forum, I'd still have to occaisionally feel guilty about that. For me, it has to be Turf Green. I never could get into gold or the white ones. I've completed two applications of the baby shampoo (with a week of no treatment in between). It has definitely helped in some areas, while other areas seem to still be hard soil. I've noticed that after a couple of inches of penetration with a screwdriver, I can feel gravel in the soil. I dug up a spot and it's not pure gravel by any means, but a few inches down there are a considerable amount of small rocks/stones. Do you think this is negatively affecting my lawn? I've done the tuna can test and adjusted my sprinklers accordingly, but after 4 days of not watering the grass had gotten a bit wilted, so it seems like despite my shampoo treatments the water is still not penetrating deeply enough....? Thoughts? Should I just keep doing the shampoo treatment a few more times? And water slightly more frequently (every 3 days?) until the soil really softens up throughout the yard? There are a lot of brownish spots now (see image below). Mowing once a week about 1.25-1.5" high.

If we go by the book, then we should try to go by how much fertilizer we have already given the soil up to the time we overseeded. The use of the 'starter' was to help the seed germinate early and well, protecting the seedlings to get off to a good start. One should then ask themselves whether the soil the seedlings are growing in needs more food. Me, I'd let the seedlings come into this world with what help the starter gave, then allowing for growth of the lawn and the new lawn, before I subjected it to increased growth by way of fertilizer. If the lawn has been fed regularly through the season, then I suggest the soil has sufficient to give a good account of itself and giving more is not necessary. You don't want to encourage new growth that will be hit by early frost, which would probably stunt its growth or kill it, and have that show up in the spring. If you do feed the new turf, I'd hold back giving it any volume that might make the grass grow on and on, into frost time.

If you are going to spend money redoing your floors, you would be better served to put that investment toward hard floors and get rid of that carpet. There is nothing that is every going to make those carpets clean. It is not the nature of a piece of napped fabric, that is on the receiving end of every bit of dirt and debris in the house, to ever be clean. It will always harbor loose dirt, stains, and very small critters and will forever release lint and dust into your environment, and forever remain very high maintenance requiring expensive machines and a lot of your time to keep it livable. Think about it---would you throw a piece of fabric on the floor and walk over it for years and expect it to be clean? You will be amazed at how much cleaner your house will be without that constant source of dirtiness. Even the air will seem to flow easier. Have there been animals in the house? Those stains will never come out.
