Survived 1st Predicted cold night!!!

I have been going to post about predictions for 3 nights Sat, Sunday and Monday all from 31-33. And then saw Dawn's post this morning. I'm not posting to her thread so it will stay at the top longer. Our predicted low for this morning was 33. We are 43 currently. They are now saying 31-33 tonight and all but one service has raised Monday and Tuesday nights. Hopefully they will miss tonight also. I will continue to wait to put my big plants out in the garden. Wed they go out regardless. The wind is blowing 20-30 mph. Blew yesterday. I'm almost to the point with my lean to greenhouse as I am with my big one. I need some calm weather to finish. So not sure how much I will get done today. 3 of my 4 Azul Toro potatoes are showing regrowth from the 26 degree dip 2 weeks ago. Nothing on the 4th. And most of the late potatoes are showing growth. Will try to cover them a little with mulch if the wind will let up enough for it too stay on. None of the seeds I planted have germinated yet. So should be fine there. Hope everyone else either avoids or survives the cold nights possible in the next few days. Jay

How in the world were they 10 degrees off on your forecast low? lol You just know if they miss my forecast low by 10 degrees, it means we go 10 degrees colder instead of ten degrees warmer.

I am really glad the cold hasn't materialized there this morning. One night down, two more to go!

I wish you were having our weather this morning as we've had on-and-off rain and high (but not too high!) wind since around 4 a.m. We didn't especially "need" the rain as we still were plenty wet from last week's rain and I know you sure could use it. So far the hail has missed us.

Our greenhouse frame has been up for so long now without its covering that I'm beginning to think it looks normal "naked". Every time it hails, though, I'm glad the greenhouse cover is still in its' box in the garage, where it may stay until autumn, since we're already having some pretty hot days here. We have had the most hail events at our house this year that we've ever had in one year and it is only May 1st.

I don't know when you'll get that calm weather you need in order to finish both greenhouses, but a calm day has to occur sooner or later.

The lower portion of my garden where plants grow at grade level instead of in raised beds is now a pond, but since it has been wet for a couple of weeks now, nothing is planted there yet anyway--and likely won't be for some time. I'm not going to complain about the rain because we need it so badly. I just hope the drier portions of OK, TX and KS get some of this rainfall today too.

Sometimes life just isn't fair. Today I could walk in my garden without sinking over my shoe tops. Although I was working in light rain, I was out covering plants so the cold weather doesn't get them. Since tomorrow is raining also maybe they will just stay covered tomorrow, but then on Tuesday I will have to be quick to get everything uncovered before the sunlight cooks them.

While I was typing the weather radio just alerted to a sever thunder storm in my county. Guess I will go try to cover a few other things. Man, I'm tired of this.

I'm really unsure of the extent of my damage. I checked my apricots and there seemed to be some tiny fruit that was still solid and normal looking. I could open it up but I might as well wait. The plum blossoms and all open peach blossoms were frozen solid in the morning but look normal now. I might as well just wait and see what everything does but I really think my unopen flowers will be fine. Just about 20 miles south of me in Westchester County, NY, there seemed to me no damage and no frozen blossoms at all, even though I arrived at a site there before sun had hit them. And this was a site at the base of a hollow. What pisses me off is I was grafting in Greenwich today and even though they are a zone warmer than me there trees are at exactly the same state of development- what's wrong with my site! The best news is that most of my customers seem to have gotten off scott free.

They should be fine for a short period like 3 days. We're predicted to hit 30F two nights later this week. I'll cover mine at night and expect them to pull through. The soil is pretty warm as it has been 90F the last two days. If soil drops below 60F for long the plants may damp off.

i am inclined to say that it can handle it outside with temps in the 40's. if a freeze is not predicted, why wouldn't it be o.k.? is it a large container; i.e. big enough to offer some insulation space between the roots and container walls? they survive in the ground here with no visible damage during freezes in winter and temps can drop into the upper 20's (but not for extended periods as it usually warms quickly the next morning). brrrrrr! 40 degrees in august - i just can't imagine. we won't be seeing that until late november although, with the heat wave we have experienced lately, it sounds rather refreshing! ;-)

Thanks for the words of encouragement and photo ideas grannybj65, I have a really nice digital camera and plan to take LOTS of photos all along the way as I develop the garden. The photos linked here were taken by a good friend. I have an eye for good snapshots so once I'm down there I'll be taking dozens of photos from all angles and different weather conditions. The joy of digital photography - you never run out of film. LOL One of the things I like to do is take a series of photos from the same angle all day long on a sunny day to get a general idea of where the shady and sunny spots are. Doing that a few times throughout the year as the Earth changes kilter I'll perfect an image in my mind of where best to place different plants based on their light/shade tolerance. Looking at the photo of the front of the house dead-on, I just got a great idea. Facing the house, the living room is on the right side with the single window and the kitchen is on the left side with the double windows. In front of the double windows inside is the kitchen sink, so it is not a spot that will have tremendous "looking out the window" appeal. So, as the cogs turn in this hard head of mine, I'm visualizing lattice from the center pole on the porch going to the left corner, then around to where the porch meets the house. Then cutting a rectangular window out of the center of the front of the lattice and framing it a bit so there is a clear view out to the road from the kitchen window. And then I can visualize the lattice painted white (or more likely light gray as I'm not too fond of white outside) and covered in Scarlet Runner Bean and Clematis with maybe some "Joseph's Coat" (Amaranthus tricolor) in front and some dwarf Cannas with some "Love lies Bleeding" (Amaranthus sp.) along the side. The scarlet, violet, purple and deep reds and burgundys will all be in harmony with one another, at least until I decide on a totally different look down the road. I can have a nice metal frame rocking deck seat out on the porch hidden away behind the wall of vines where I can sit and enjoy the shade - and a good spray from the gardening hose on all the vines will create a nice cooling breeze. Well, it's a thought anyway. :) I saw on eBay this evening someone in San Diego California is selling several batches of Tillandsias (the common T. ionantha). They are offering them as a box of 50 child fist-sized clumps of them for around $20 if I recall - quite cheap. I immediately thought how neat it would be to buy 50 or 100 clumps and then carefully wire them to a wire-frame wreath for a living, blooming front door wreath, especially once the front porch is semi-latticed in and well shaded. A few sprigs of Spanish Moss draping down from the wreath here and there would further kick off the effect. It would live on the wet air, constantly regenerate itself with new growth, and bloom off and on throughout the year. During the colder months I could bring it inside and hang up it in the living room window where it can get plenty of bright indirect light. Ok, I'll shut up now.

We have had intermittent rain, thunder, lightning, wind, etc. on and off all day long. I think the NOAA weather radio went off for the first time around 1:45 a.m. and then periodically once or twice an hour after that. Around 4 a.m. I gave up on trying to sleep and got out of bed.

I feel like I woke up at your house this morning, what with the water standing in the garden (and everywhere else) and the cold temps and on-and-off day-long rainfall. Because of the wind and lightning, I am not going to be able to cover up anything tonight. If I get a chance, I'll cover up stuff tomorrow for tomorrow night.

At least it looks like we'll be cloudy here tonight, so that should keep the temperature from dropping too far below the forecast low (I hope).

I think Jay has a Frost Advisory and Jan has a Freeze Warning. Ugh. Doesn't seem like anyone around these parts can catch a break on the weather lately.

Yes Dawn they are predicting the area Jan lives in a few degrees cooler than us. As you know though I'm like you. I'm in a lower spot so many times I'm a few degrees cooler than the NWS station a mile away on top of the hill. They are saying 32-33 tonight for us. Had snow and light rain earlier today. The rain for tomorrow has been removed so hopefully the front moved through earlier and maybe tomorrow night might be a little warmer than they predicted. Had winds most of the day almost twice as strong as they predicted. Winds are usually something they can hit. Jay
