Yes, I'm afraid. Any that got "replanted" is unlikely to pop up again. If you didn't do this to the majority, you might wait a couple days and see what does come up. Then you could just fill in the empty places. By sharing such experiences you encourage others to try, and, not to be afraid to ask questions.

As George said, the replanted ones likely will not pop up out of the ground again so you may have to reseed those areas with fresh seed.

It is good that you shared this experience so other new veggie growers can learn from your experience.

hahahaha that is a funny story! Last year I kept 'weeding' my corn patch and got so discouraged that it was not coming up. I figured with all the rain the seeds MUST have kept washing away. After a few weeks of replanting and replanting i decided to give up on that corn patch and just let the weeds have it...... so the patch went to weeds and you can imagine my surprise when some of the weeds started having corn stalks on them! I felt soooo stupid.

The first year I lived in this house, I protected a plant for months in the flower bed only to discover it was poke salet. I still have to remove it every year, from every bed, but at least I can identify it a little earlier.

Funny! I imagine we've all done similar things. Just last year, after having grown spinach for years and knowing very well what it looks like, I "weeded" every last bit of it. Doh!

When our kids were little, and our oldest daughter was about four, we would help each to plant their own little garden project. We lived out in the hills in Mexico, in the State of Puebla. The soil was very sandy and loose.

Anyway, we planted carrots in our daughter's garden. I noticed that the carrots were perpetually wilted. I kept trying to figure out what was the matter, as we had LOTS rain. One day, I shadowed our daughter, as she went out to check on her carrots. Sure enough... I discovered the problem! She was talking to her carrots and pulling them up, one by one, to see how they were progressing. Then, she'd shove them back down in their little hole and move on!

these are all such wonderful stories! I am afraid I have done that with one flower bed I have. I planted the seeds, and now that things are sprouting up in there I cannot tell what is a weed and what is the plant! I just have to let them over grow and see what is what!

Nothing like fertilizing weeds...:)...

Actually there is a lesson, there, to be learned: know you weeds (or learn to know them). Once you do, you can even weed beds of plants you don't really know. You just weed out the weeds which you DO know!

The first year we gardened in Ok we tried to convert a Johnson Grass Pasture to a corn patch. NOW we can tell the difference between corn seedlings and sprouting Johnson Grass but not that year. (And now we're smart enough not to plant anything until we get rid of the JG.)
We didn't get much corn out of that patch.

I also have lots of dogwood trees around my house, but never seemed to have any seedlings, unlike a friend with trees. She said, "You're weeding them out." "I wouldn't," I said. "You ARE," she said. So I decided to try planting some seeds in a large pot. The next spring when I saw something coming up in the pot I took a closer look and was dismayed to find the pot full of poke seedlings which come up in my flower beds every year. I had pulled up half of them when I thought, "Wait....what if?" Sure enough the other half of the plants put up the first true leaves of--dogwoods. Now I know, dogwood seedlings look like poke seedlings early on.

I don't do too badly with the veggies, but I have been known to mess up with flowers and 'weeds'.

One of our first years here, and possibly even the year before we moved here....back when we'd come up here on the weekend and work on clearing the future fenceline and putting up a fence around our 14 acres, I kept seeing these ugly dead things in the pastures in the spring. They were dried up and brown and ugly in May and June and obviously had seedheads on them. I was afraid they were some sort of horrible weed, so I pulled them up and threw them on a newly started compost pile. The next year, wildflowers bloomed in those pastures, and that's when I realized I'd pulled up and thrown away the seedheads of all the Indian Paintbrush. Now, when the paintbrush blooms every spring, I'm so happy to see them....and we don't mow down those ugly dead-looking things until they've set seed!

About our third year here, small green weeds kept coming up in the new flower border that ran around the veggie garden on all four sides. I didn't think I had planted anything there that had foliage like that, but thought maybe these little seedlings might be some cool wildflowers....so I left them there. Guess what they were? Ragweed! After I realized my mistake and started pulling them out, I learned they had long running roots everywhere. It took me three years of consistently pulling them out to get rid of all of them, and a stray one still pops up now and then.

Once upon a time....about a decade ago, I planted some pink evening primrose seed alongside the driveway about 100' east of the house and all the cultivated beds. I knew it "could" be invasive, but had no clue how invasive. The first year, they were gorgeous and stayed where I planted them. The next year we had them all over the 3 or 4 acres around the house and garden. I still think they're pretty, but I have to aggressively pull up hundreds of seedlings every spring or they'll take over everything. Hmmmm.....that gives me an idea. I wonder if pink evening primrose would crown out bermuda grass?

Dorothy, We didn't get all the Johnson grass roots out of our first blackberry bed and our first daylily bed. I fought that Johnson grass for years and finally let it win and 'take back' those areas. I still have it trying to pop up in parts of the veggie garden in our 12th year here, but not that much of it compared to the early years. I hate Johnson grass almost as much as bermuda grass.

Business is good, Dawn thanks for asking! We're doing some renovations and changing the name, but we're still around so something must be right. We still want to plant some nice ornamental okra out front, because obviously okra and bbq go hand in hand right? At least in Oklahoma they should. To stay on topic, I planted some Blue Greasy Grit beans(which seem to actually be black) last week and they've popped up all over the place. What is usually the cut-off date for spring-planted pole beans? Can I succession plant?
I also have some Arikara Yellow bush beans I wanted to plant for the fall. If I wanted to use those as dried beans, do I just let them all set beans to dry on the plant? I've grown pole snap beans but have never grown any beans specifically for dried use.

Dale, I am further north than you and I planted pole beans in late July last year, and I got oodles. Go for it. I am glad to hear that your business is doing well. Last time we were in OKC, I told my husband that I wished that I had written down the business address so we could have gone there to check it out.

We were in Joplin today, and he mentioned eating bar-b-q, then quickly said, "Oops, I know you can't do that". I love, love, love bar-b-que, but I am allergic to Red Dye #40 and I have gotten it more than once in bar-b-que sauce. Once before I knew what I was allergic to, I ate at a well known chicken place in the Rocky Mountains. I was traveling with 3 grandchildren, and the oldest was a young teenager. We spent most of the day in a little park where she tended the younger ones while I recovered enough to drive to Oklahoma. I have learned which places are safe for me to eat now, and rarely have a problem.

I assure you that Butler's Smokehouse in OKC does not use any artificial dyes or preservatives in their bbq sauce. :) That's just what I hear of course.

As Carol said, you can plant pole beans throughout the summer. Depending on the heat, you may be harvesting in the fall instead of the summer...it is hard to say what any variety will do in any given year. Some cooler summers, I have harvested beans almost weekly all summer long and in some of the hotter summers I've had a long spell in mid- to late-summer when the bean plants looked magnificent but dropped blooms due to the heat. Once the temperatures dropped, the plants started hanging on to their flowers and making beans again. I always plant a lot of beans throughout the summer, often using succession plantings of bush beans to fill in 'vacant' areas left by the harvest of another type of vegetable.

Yes, just leave the beans on the plants until the pods dry, then harvest and thresh them/shell them.

I'm just getting ready to plant okra in the next few days, but Tim will have to rototill up some soil in an 'overflow' area that I haven't used the last couple of years because the fenced-in garden is full and overflowing. I have several regular okra varieties for us, and two small dwarf ornamental ones for our granddaughter's garden...Little Lucy and Baby Bubba. Many okras are very ornamental, and especially any of the ones that have red in the stalks, stems, leaves and pods.

Glad to hear that business is going so well. I was hoping all the destructive weather missed y'all.

It is great to know there is at least one smokehouse in OKC that doesn't use artificial dyes or preservatives in their BBQ sauce! I'm sure there are lots of people who'd prefer to eat food that doesn't ahve the artificial stuff added to it even if they're not allergic to it like Carol is.

I hope y'all stay safe and out of harm's way. There's been too much severe weather this week....but, heck, it is Oklahoma in May, so that's not exactly a big surprise.

And in case you're wondering why I am awake at 3:30 a.m., after the NOAA Weather Radio went off for the fourth time in less than an hour, I simply gave up on the idea of getting any sleep....and so far all the weather is west of us though maybe getting a bit closer now than it was an hour ago.

So far this week, Love County has had lots of funnel clouds in the air, but not many on the ground, some widely scattered hail, lots of wind, a good amount of thunder and lightning, and very little rain (about a half-inch). For us, as my Dad used to say, the storms so far have been "all blow and no go", but the rain will probably make it here eventually.

I have to sheepishly share my garden faux-pas for the year.

Last nite, right at dusk I was picking the weeds out of the barrels and pots on my back deck. As I came to one lone barrel I inspected the red mum that I have had planted in it for several years. I discovered a rather tall healthy plant intermingled in it. DH thought it was a "stick-tight" so I immediately yanked it!!!! Which was followed by a very strong whiff......of cilantro. Seems I forgot I'd planted some in that barrel last year and they didn't do well......until now.

Guess we'll have soft tacos one night this week!
