Morning glories tend to climb the fence and not sprawl on the ground so much, but, once they grow to the top of the fence, they keep on growing and can sort of hang or sag back down towards the ground. I don't know that they would affect your cutting-grown plant unless they began to shade it.

Other annual vines you might want to consider are moonflower vine (Ipomoea alba--similar growth habit to morning glories), black-eyed-susan vine (Thunbergia alata), cypress vine (Ipomoea quamoclit), spanish flag (Mina lobata, aka as Ipomoea lobata), or cardinal creeper (Ipomoea x multifida). I wouldn't use hyacinth bean vibe (Dolichos lablab) because it is very, very vigorous and might give your small, cutting-grown plant too much competition.

I'm not sure that I'd plant a perennial vine anywhere near the cutting-grown plant until it has had a chance to get a few years of growth because some perennial vines have very vigorous root systems. If you have a lot of space to cover, though, you could plant a perennial vine 6 to 8 feet away from your plant and let the vine grow towards it on the fence without having to worry about the roots competing with your small plant.

You also could plant an annual tropical vine like allamanda or mandeville, but you'd either have to cut it back, dig it and pot it up in the fall and overwinter it indoors in a pot or plant a new one every year.

I forgot about the moonflower. They are lovely. I've never heard of black eyed susan vine. I'll have to google it. I love black eyed susan plants. Thanks for your suggestions.

I hit the jackpot. I went to Ace Hardware and they had the black eyed susan vine, cardinal climber and several varieties of morning glory. I couldn't decide between, so I got them both, Cardinal Climber and Clark's Heavenly Blue Morning Glory. Gorgeous. Would either grow in a container too if I had a stick or something for them to climb on?

Tmel - did you get plants or seeds? Just curious. If they are started plants, I might go over and get some cardinal climber and morning glories, too. There's an Ace right down the street from me but I never remember to go there. I usually hang out at Home Depot and Precure.

They will grow in a container if you give them something to climb. I grow them in 5-gallon buckets all the time.

If they grow anything like as vigorously as mine do it will take much more than a stick or even a stake to hold them. Some kind of trellis is what I always have to have..unless you have a bush large enough for them to climb on and set the planter next to the bush.
But they will grow well in a large container. All of my vine seedlings are in a large planting trough as I call it....it is retangular.
They may be real slow to get going but once the real warmth hits they will go like crazy. Good support will be needed for them then.

I line up my 5-gallon pots near a fence (in an area that has bad clay soil in an area I haven't improved yet) and let them climb the fence.

In a separate area, alongside the dog's fenced-in play yard, I place the 5 gallon buckets in a row about a foot from the fence and put a round wire cylinder tomato cage around each bucket, with the tomato cage resting on the ground. The vines grow and cover the cages and then meander over to the top of the fence, which is more or less even with the tops of the cages. In this way, I can have vines cover the fence and give the dogs some shade.....but the dogs can't destroy the vines, like they did when I tried to grow the vines directly on the fence itself.

I have grown them in 5-gallon buckets with only a 3' tall wooden stake. The stake, though, wasn't meant to be their whole support....but just something for them to climb early on. They went up that stake and onto the fence. By midsummer the stake was completely buried under mounds and mounds of foliage. If all you have is one stake for them to climb, the first vines will climb the stake, and then other tendrils will climb the first vines, and so on and so on. Both Lowe's and Wal-mart usually have some fairly small portable trellises you can stick into a large pot, or into the ground near a large pot.

I found a trellis at Walmart and at Old Time Pottery today that I'll use in a couple of large pots. I've got those seeds for those pots in starter mix. I also direct sowed more seeds by my fence. I am assuming it'll climb a privacy fence ok? I wasn't sure if you guys had chainlink.

Tmelrose, I'm curious about what your cutting is? That may also make a difference in what you grow there. How big, wide, tall, etc.

Its a cutting off a hibiscus bush. Right now its literally smaller than a pencil with a couple of leaves. So I figured its safe for now growing morning glories and cardinal climbers since their annuals and at the rate the hibiscus is growing it may be another 10 years before the hibiscus takes off, lol. If it ever gets going good I can either move it or not replant my MGs.
