My Japanese Beetle Defense Plan

So, I'm already planning my JB defense. I'm going to try a multi-pronged approach this year instead of traps. I'd love to put down nematodes (they eat the grubs), but it'd cost around $500. Whew. Maybe another year.

Here's my plan:

1. Bird feeders and baths. Birds eat JBs, much to my surprise.

2. Remove attractants. A plum tree and the two cr. myrtles are going. Roses stay though.

3. Deadhead ALL blooms and buds on roses late May. Last year I was seeing JBs May 27!

4. Try insecticidal soap to spray directly on JBs instead of Sevin.

5. Accept some damage as just part of life in JB country.

6. Watch closely so I can start my defense as soon as I see the first beetle. Baths and feeders will go up earlier though.
