Why so much lichen on trees?

Easter morning I was heading east across north Arkansas and some place past Harrison started noticing an occasional tree just covered with lichen on the trunk. Some lichen isn't unusual, but by Searcy County it seemed that there was definitely more than normal. The drive back was after dark, so I didn't get a better idea of where the unusual amount started. At Christmas time there didn't seem to be anything out of the ordinary. I understand that lichens grow in the winter, but they are supposed to grow very slowly. Have I just not noticed before? Here's a picture and article.
