Anybody been there?

On another forum, Debra_Boston mentioned a restaurant called the Herb Lyceum in Groton MA. They have a website and it looks wonderful but a bit expensive and not a walk-in place. They have herbs for sale, gardens, antiques, and other things I love. Has anyone been there who can offer some first-hand feedback?

Ginny, Although I live very close by to the Herb Lyceum and have wanted to go there I too have never made it there. Our local paper restaurant review column highly recommended it but I couldn't find the review online for you.

Another Groton, Mass restaurant that is all the rave now is the Gibbet Hill Grill located in a restored barn on several hundred acre dairy farm that is now conservation land.

I'd study their catalog and preorder. That way you won't have a long wait and the hostas will (hopefully) have been in the pots a few days. I always went through the gardens, got ideas, and then shopped, but there's nothing to look at now. The lady told us there are five people to do all the selling, digging, potting, etc., and that they just don't have time to keep the display beds weeded. Very disappointing, seeing the beautiful beds of mature plants was half the reason for the trip. The plants are fine and reasonably priced. Some of the ones I got this year had been freshly dug and needed time to recover, still better than if they'd been shipped.

Deanna, Just by way of conversation, the default possesive pronoun for third person singular is "his", unless you are addressing an entirely female group, when you may use "her". Today, grammar is so often messed up that I hear things like the following all the time: "Does everyone have their book?" instead of "Does everyone have his book?" and "Did anyone lose their pencil?" instead of "Did anyone lose his pencil?" This is even on TV and in movies and on the radio. It's so often used that it's becoming accepted. And you're right to question the use of "there", "their" and "they're". Also the same for "your" and "you're". I have a few pet peeves but it seems nobody cares anyway so it would be a losing battle. Oh and for the record, it should be "I wish there were a gender-neutral term for the third person singular possessive." God I feel like an English teacher! My comments are only made because you were discussing grammar and certainly not intended to be anything more. After all I ain't no expurt! LOL!

The place is about 3 hours east of me. I had e-mailed Cory about a month ago to find out what he does with his potted Hostas over the winter, being that his winters would be like mine. I also wanted to know what his normal prices where, he has a end of season sale, all pots $10.00 each. Cory responded to my e-mail promptly and was very informative. My Grandfather is also 87 years young and I really want to take him there next spring, early summer, although we may have to spend the night at my sisters, because my Grandfather really likes to talk! Hopefully, him and I can make a few road trips next year, Hallson's, Schmid's and maybe even Ken's...since we would be in the area...;-) (just kidding Ken)

As it is just next door... yes. Most famous for its tulips but also other bulb flowers is the "Keukenhof" -- try this link: http://www.keukenhof.nl/ The area in between Amsterdam and Lisse is plastered with bulb producing nurseries, but the Keukenhof is surely the most spectacular to visit. Check out their indoor flower shows, too, like for example "Â·20 April till 25 April Daffodils, Iris, Special Bulbous Plants". Depending on the amount of time and the means of transport which you'll have during your stay, you might find a way to other Narcissus festivals in the neighbour countries, for example the "Fete des Jonquilles" in Gerardmer / France, on 16th / 17th of April (http://www.societe-des-fetes-gerardmer.org/fete2005.htm). Another interesting event is the "Genter Floralien" in Belgium (http://www.floralien.be/DE/index.aspx). Only a short trip over the German border and you can see the beautiful private garden Lucenz-Bender, which is famous for its narcissus collection. (http://lucenz-bender.de/gartenpforte.htm). Sorry, the site is only in German, you can catch an impression with the link "Gartenansichten" > FrÃ¼hling. They open their garden doors on 30th of April / 1st of May. Europe is tiny, you can easily reach many places within a few hours of travelling.

Yes, thanks for those links. In looking up the Herb Lyceum last week, I stumbled upon the Gibbet Hill Grill and have plans to go very soon. It looks gorgeous. Wish it were open earlier in the day to enjoy the scenery. This time of year, it will be dark when we get there. At last, some good restaurants that take advantage of our beautiful New England scenery.

I agree that it would be nice if it were open for lunch. It is open for Thanksgiving dinner earlier in the day. Post back here your experiences there as I'd be interested to hear how you liked it.

Just a correction to my previous post, it is a beef cattle farm (not a dairy farm as I had stated).

Gibbet Hill is AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We went there for Thanksgiving last year and it was superb. And we had a window seat looking out on to rolling hills and black angus cattle. Delightful!

I have been there a half dozen times also since their opening. THe food is terrific. Staff friendly and very competent. And they were like this since day 1. Very impressive. (with prices to match unfortunately)

They do functions too, but haven't been to one yet.

They get sooooo busy, that reservations have to be made way in advance. And Sat nights they don't even take them except for large parties. Maybe its not so bad now that the novelty has worn off a bit.

I went to an herb sale at Herb Lyceum once. no biggie, but I'm not especially into herbs.

I think the website said the cattle are for breeding, not for beef or dairy. And Wendy, that's a good recommendation!
