using wire for support?

just wondering : do you think this area is too hot in the summer time to use cattle panels (wire) to make trellis for cucumbers, green beans, peas and such? seems to me like twine would be a bit flimsey, and i dont like the look of poles stuck all over my garden.

Ceresone, I read on a different forum that the poster was using cattle panels for trellis and that it did not get too hot when it was put in place. Unlike if it was just laying flat in the sun. I too am considering using the panels for my cucumbers this season.

Sounds like a good idea to me. I have used cement reinforcement wire, and had no problems with it.

Autumn Joy does not flop for me either. I use it in many places in my garden, since it is ridiculously easy to propagate it. I do have to be careful where I plant it because most of my garden is too wet for sedums of any sort. AJ is the easiest one for me to use because it will tolerate a bit more moisture than most sedums. Maestro did flop for me just like it did for Jodikay - in conditions very similar to my plantings of Autumn Joy. The first two seasons Maestro stood tall with no problems, but this year it grew about 9 inches taller than in previous years and fell over once it developed flower heads, disappointing. Next year I may have to chop it early in the season.

Either twine or wire will work equally well. Beans climb by spiraling around a vertical object. They don't depend on attachment to a surface. Jim

clematis and plastic chicken wire support

I've never used plastic mesh but wire hardware cloth has been making a good support for clematises in our 'north alley' garden since 2015 when we used it to extend the height of the 4' chainlink fence after a coyote came over the fence and attacked our miniature poodle - fortunately DH heard the noise and chased it off before and damage was done to our dog! The coyotes could still get over the now-6' fence if they wanted to but it would at least discourage them and they'd probably damage the height extension, making their presence more obvious. In the 3+ years since we did the extension in Feb.-Mar. 2015, we've not had any more coyote encounters. The clematises that grew on to chainlink fence raced up the new height extension as soon as they sprouted new growth in 2015! In the spring we cut the clematises back to 3-4' and rip off the higher foliage with no difficulty. So far, the clematises seem to be thriving there - as are other vines that grow on the fence. Some pictures: Making the fence taller in Feb. 2015 - you can see clematis stems in the corner...: Clematises on the fence by mid July 2015: In this picture from 2016 you can see some clematises growing on/through the mesh: July 2017: And these pictures for last month show some of the other vines on the fence too: I'd be inclined to use the wire mesh rather than plastic and support it on a frame of some sort so there is enough room between the mesh and the shed to allow the clematis to go up both sides of the mesh.

Cattle panels work great. All my neighbors use them in rows for tomatoes and pole beans.

My hoop house last year was bent cattle panels. This year I am using the frame of panels with the plastic removed for my pole beans on one side and cucumbers on the other. I think it will work great.

The plants will shade the metal, so they shouldn't heat up significantly.

Let's all check back in at the end of the season and see how we do.

We use cattle panels for the cucumbers and they do fine..no problem with heat.

We use cattle panels as tunnel archways for our gourds. We bend them & secure into an upside down arch...they look really neat & are fun to walk through...Just watch out 'cuz you'll always hit your head on a gourd~

I go to Sears and get their bottom and top packing crate panels, their 4X6, they ship their small garden tractors in them, and they gladly give them away! I use the 'A' frame method and before I put them up I stretch and staple chicken wire in between.

Now is the time to get them as Spring is approaching and they will be selling their tractors(mowers)like crazy, also use them for keeping critters out of the garden, Evan used them to make chicken runs and coops. I still have over 200 in my barn waiting for me to do something else with them.

Their made out of hardwood, a nice coat of paint will keep them for years and years.

The key word here is ((( FREE))).and such a wonderful word it is!!

I've used hog and cattle panels in East Texas,and here in the Ozarks for many years in making tomato cages,cucumber cages,morninglory cages. Have also used them for cantelopes,Sugar baby watermelons,muscadines,climbing roses.Never had any problems,also birds love to sit on them and play in them so you get a little extra fertilizer.Good luck guys! its so good to be back i,ve really missed you.
