What seed companies are you using?

I am getting rejuvenated about gardening hearing you all talk about seeds. I haven't ordered much except from Baker Creek and Pinetree for several year so I wondered who you all are using.

I need to get organized and send for some onion plants and seeds. I will used Dixondale for the onions.

I've used Swallowtail a couple times for flowers but not so far this year. I ordered some native plant seeds from Prairie Moon and another site I can't remember last year. I need to check out what's new on Baker Creek's site. They always have some neat stuff. I'll order some veggie seeds if I manage to finally put in some raised beds like I want to.

So far I have ordered from Swallowtail, Pinetree and Tomatofest. I don't think Tomatofest is the best place for tomato seeds but Okiedawn liked Greek Rose tomato and they have it. Then of course you have to order more to justify the shipping which was about $4. She grows so many kinds and she doesn't get them in the same place. We have a great forecast for this coming week so maybe I won't get so nutty ordering and dreaming of spring.

HI Gardensue - I tried ordering from Baker creek today, but they sold out of orangeglow. Turns out i got them from Seed Savers Exchange. So happy:-) thank you! Farmerdilla - I ordered already when I got your post. I wanted Orangeglow and not many places have it. thank you for your help. I got orangeglow and Cherokee moon & Stars -- if you can give me any info on these I would apprecaite it. I've never grown watermelons before and I know you were really nice and helped with my muskmelon choices.

can you recommend a company to buy Salvia Black and Blue seeds?

From our experience in the last few years, most of the Black & Blue plants sold in the major nursery channels are from tissue cultured plants. It appears that the mother meristem tissue stock has declined, perhaps due to being grown in vitro for too long. The result are plants that grow with far less vigor than one would expect from this clone. This seems to be a nationwide issue. We have sought out alternate sources for new mother stock, but to date are not convinced that any of the these are free from the lack-of-vigor we have documented. So the short answer is no, I don't know right now where a B&B of old can be had. We are still evaluating a few sourced outside the typical channels and may be able to offer advice later in the season. For now we are pointing people to other Salvia guaranitica varieties.

TXU had kept our decade+ non-contract service reasonably competitive until the past couple years or so. Appears they lost some flexibility (willingness?) to price match as they headed into Chapter 11 restructuring with EHF. We switched to Source Power and Gas this year and have been happy so far. The $250 TXU offered us to return was a nice gesture, but was less than six weeks of our warm-month savings from switching to SPG. Annual savings should be at or above $1,200. Comparisons and figures from the PUC powertochoose.org site have matched our experience pretty well so far. They're a small start-up with some deep pocket backing. Doesn't bother us, but expect plans, rates, and possibly ownership will very likely change as they grow. Seed stock...are all created equal (genetically)?

Question is regarding genetics -- assuming that seed supply was not inadvertently pollenated by another variety, should I expect to see different results from different seed suppliers? Generally speaking, no. However from year to year one can expect differences in traits that are influenced by environmental factors such as size and taste. There is also another potential reason, selection preferences. If supplier A and supplier B both received stock of a line at the same time but had been growing out stock seperately for a number of years then it is possible that there could be some selection pressure differences that developed over time. Such as if supplier A tended to cull out lower yielding but larger fruits types and supplier B selected for larger fruits vs higher yielding. If I buy some Delicious seeds, should I expect them all to be the same genetically? Even from a reputable supplier one can expect to see some variation within an open pollinated line. This is more likely when one is growing out larger number of plants. The variation will be from several potential factors including, but not limited too, environment, natural variation within in lot due to missed selection and occassional, though rare, mutations. For the most part they should be relatively the same if the grower for the seed company properly isolated and culled any off types. But again one has the potential for the same issue stated above about inadvertent selection pressure biases influence line selection between different growers/suppliers (ie this is what I think it should be). True hybrids should be highly uniform.

I probably won't make up a order but I like the dark vinca in the Park's catalog that came yesterday. I hope they have that color in the garden centers. Christie I saw a Garden Gate magazine in Sams that had the new plants for 2013. I am bad about looking at magazines in stores and not buying them.

Well, I ordered enough from Swallowtail that I got free shipping....should be enough ornamentals and most vegetables. I still need sweet corn. I think I have enough tomato seeds for this year...then the great clean up of all old seeds...into the trash can.

Drat,Helen, I didn't get vinca! They are very easy from seeds and one of my favorites....may have to order those today.

I ordered tomato seeds from Double Helix Farms because I wanted Stump of the World recommended elsewhere. I like the nice safe bubble envelope protecting the seeds that came yesterday. My last order of seeds from another place which I won't mention was squashed in the mail. I am not saying the name because they responded to my e-mail complaint within hours and are sending more seeds. I think there are still plenty of seeds that will grow anyway. I was happy with Swallowtail and Pinetree also. Tomatofest didn't protect the seeds but there was no evidence of squashing on those.

I think I finished up ordering. I ordered a lot of onions from Dixondale and , though I said I would never order from them again, I ordered some flower seeds from Park. If they take forever this time, I am going to advertise it far and wide!
