Black widow spiders in the garden?

tadasana

The day before yesterday I found a black widow spider in my garden. (The first time I'd ever seen one up close: the red hourglass markings and everything . . . Freaky!)

I smashed it with a brick. But now I'm worried about its kin. My very dear dogs love to lounge in the garden (mostly on a mulch path) and that is my main concern: I don't want them in danger.

The spider was beneath some black weed-blocking material I was removing for the season. But I use that same black stuff beneath the mulch path through the garden. This is an organic flower/vegetable garden so I don't want to nuke it. But I'd be grateful for your advice about keeping black widows out. (For example, is the mulch path a potential Holiday Inn for them?)

Also, is this encounter just a fluke or have others in OK found black widows in gardens lately?

Thanks!
