Tomato experts, a Q about Sweet 100:

Can someone tell me what your Sweet 100 seedlings look like compared to other seedlings? I picked up a three-pack a couple of weeks ago and re-potted them. They were tiny when I bought them, but now are much bigger. The problem is that they do not look like what I would have expected and what I remember of this variety. The ones I have actually look like Patio or similar types. They are very stocky and extremely healthy-looking, like I always remember Patio looking. I am thinking I may have got one that was mis-labeled.

I may need to go out and find another Sweet 100 just to make sure I have a few plants left in late summer with hundreds of cracking, tiny tomatoes that ripen for weeks after I stop caring and stop picking them. It just wouldn't be my normal garden without that.

I guess if I were to say that Sweet 100 seedlings look like a typical cherry tomato seedling to me, would you find that a less than acceptable response? To me, most cherry tomato seedlings look pretty much the same, although Ildi and Riesentrauble have atypical foliage which makes it easy to pick them out of a crowd.

I don't grow Sweet 100, but I do grow Sweet Million. I would look at the plant right now and describe the foliage for you, but it is outside in the thunder and lightning (but no rain) and I am inside sitting at the computer. I did google and find you some photos of Sweet 100 seedlings. When you scroll down the webpage, you'll see some seedlings in peat pots that should give you a good enough view to see if they match what you have now....or what you remember from previous years.

If they are stocky-looking AND they are indeed cherry tomatoes (because, if it is mislabeled, there's no guarantee it's a cherry, is there), then they might be Husky Gold or Husky Red. These are short internode plants and they do sort of have the look of a patio tomato plant.

I'm trying to remember what other varieties were at Atwoods near the Sweet100, but I just can't remember. I think a switch of tags on the shelf is most likely.

I've grown Sweet100 for the last few years, but haven't actually eaten one since I lived in Texas. How weird is that?

I've just brought some upside down tomato plant hangers. Like the topsy turvey. I brought sweet 100's as I wanted a smaller tomato variety so it could still grow given the gravity factors. Having never grown tomato's before I'm quite happy I can avoid staking and bugs. I'm moving into an apartment soon so will hang it by the window and make sure it gets enough air, hopefully it will last ok, given that the apartment is like a greenhouse in summer. In terms of planting the tomato plants into the upside down hanger, I have some soil and fertilizer, but I was wondering how often I need to add fertilizer and seeing as it's growing upside down, will I need to worry about pinching or just do a little here and there? Probably too much water or nitrogen on the one at home. If you see lot's of dark green growth and no flowers you have too much nitrogen. Cut back on the water too as I'll bet it's causing the leaf curl. Trim off all the leaves that touch the soil if there are any! This keeps the plant from getting deseases. It might perk up! Stick it in the sun more if you can! Keep the pots moist but not water logged. Even watering is the key.

hi, thanks for all your help so far. in the month of june the lowes night time temperature was 46* on the first (my plants were covered) ever since then night time low temperatures have remained in the low 60's occasionally dropping to 55* daytime high temperatures have been in the low 70's or upper 60's. the last time I watered my plant was in May this month the 7+" of rain have more then taken care of the plants watering needs. however since the soil in the raised bed is well drain it is only moist not soggy. the fruit are very tiny when they drop maybe 1/2 CM in diamater basicly one blossom setsand then the fruit drops another blossom sets and the fruit drops again etc...... The plant has not set any fruit that havee not dropped. My other plants are well behind the sweet 100 so they don't have blooms yet . I think that the flowers are getting pollinated since there is most certainly a very small fruit that is set before it falls off. there have been a fw blossoms that did not get pollinated and droped but they didn't form baby fruit. thanks, DLF

My Sweet 100s are bigger than previous years. The first question I would ask you is, is the source the same? Same packet of seeds, or seedlings from the same nursery? My first cherry tomatoes this year are labeled Sweet 100 from a local nursery. I bought a few plants at a point where there was some worry about my seedlings, some of which are Sweet 100s. While these first fruits are large in size, they are not as sweet as usual. Perhaps my own Sweet 100s grown from seed will be different. After my first year of growing tomatoes, I always planted at least four types of toms. And tomato volunteer always slowly turn up to fill in spaces where deer ate a plant or blight required an early plant be pulled. You never know what types will do well in a given year. That makes it interesting to some; frustrating to others.

It seems like a lot of cherry tomato plants start out looking a little spindley at first. I planted black cherry last Wednesday night and 4 of the 5 have germinated. I planted 5 of several varities and 10 of Big Bite. I was removing all of those that had germinated and putting them into cups and almost missed the black cherry because the plant was such a dark color. At this stage it just sort of blended in with the potting mix.

The Pepperoncini pepper seeds have had 100 percent germination already. I also planted Chinese Giant and have tried my Burpee Carnival Mix for the 2nd time. It seems to be the only thing that I can't get to germinate this year. I planted them last year and they were just fine. This is a new pack for 2008, but I finally threw the first batch away with zero germination. I know that peppers sometimes take a long time so I am giving it a second chance.

We got a few minutes of wind and rain and it was over. I hope that is all for the night.
