Logees 2007 Tentative Info Needed

Hey, Gang!!

Logee's is very willing to have us back (ya think????) but would like a more definitive number than "somewhere between 5 and 20". Had some very enthusiastic response to my first post, but please let me know if you are even 30% planning on coming. So Far:

Third Sunday in January. Meet in Danielson, CT 9:00am for 9:30 arrival at Logee's. Tour, shopping. Lunch at Vanilla Bean.

If you're not into tropicals, come anyway. The experience is outstanding and given that we're gardeners, the guides took us to places most of the public Never see. Special trip and

Please let me know via this thread if you have any intention of coming so I can set the date with Logee's.

Definitely - looking forward to it. Who couldn't use a shot of green and tropical at the end of January? (Even if it is not of an island sort!)

thanks to everyone for the comments. i posted this original item partially to help some beginners to avoid some of the pitfalls of lawn care (which this website allowed me to do) and partially to get some advice from the experts (i am no expect, me and my lawn are both works in progress). i am simply trying to fine tune my annual maintenance schedule and may post it when it is finalized. as far as chemical vs organic, i do have a 13 month old so am trying to transition to a more organic approach. but for crabgrass and poa control i will likely stay with pendamethalin (halts/dimension) and keep her off the lawn for a week or so. for antifungal, i will try to stay will fine cracked corn, but if major parts of my lawn are dying i reserve the right to treat with a more potent, target specific chemical (i realize then i will lose the option of using cracked corn/corn meal for 2-3 months). in the past i have been too quick to use chemicals for dollar spot/leaf spot when only a few small areas of lawn have been impacted, less than 1ft diam. spots turning brown/melting out.

Christie, Yes, they do. It's about an hour for me but the drive is easy. The thing about Baker Creek is that you'll find things there you definitely won't find elsewhere, especially with heirloom vegetables. But they have garlic, fruit trees, native plants, perennials, annuals, tools, books, soap, food, etc. Lots of fun stuff! Oh... and don't forget the speakers which is the main reason I like to go. Thanks Jay. I look at it this way, whatever going to make it through this winter will probably not going to die anytime soon and this kind of freak weather probably won't occur for another 10 years so there's no where to go but up from here. I'm not too bum about it. I noticed your imbe, their looking good. I also have one too. It is quite cool tolerant. Read somewhere that it is graft compatible with a mangosteen but haven't been able to confirm it yet. Also what is the name of the pineapple your growing there? Red, have you tasted the capulin cherry before? I had some before and wasn't really pleased by it.

I'm considering it. I guess you can put me and DH down as 30% sure. Actually, he is the one who instantly said he wanted to go again when I mentioned it to him. I'm the one who's hesitating. But as winter comes on and things get dreary, I'm sure I'll be up for the trip again. So put 2 people down for me.

I REALLY want to come but one of the difficulties for me is under perfect driving conditions I am going to be about 15 minutes late would it be a problem catching up with the tour? Then again I could always arrive the day before and do a little shopping hmmm. kt

Missed out on this last year so now I absolutely have to come to find out what all the buzz is about. Sounds like a wonderful "mid-winter break"! Count me in -- I'll hope for good weather (or at least, no snow drifts over about five feet!)

Katy, if your timing problem has to do with the ferry, you could always come over the night before and stay at my house. Just let me know if that's the case, because I'll need to start hauling the debris out of the so-called guest room soon. The kids may be gone, but their stuff doesn't seem to be going anywhere ...

Ahh the number one challenge of the empty nester is how to coerce your older children into taking all of their treasures with them when they go. I did however want to share with you that after many years of research I have determined female children are far superior at pack rat and leave behind skills than are male children. All relevant research can be confirmed at www.KatyKnowsItAll.edu. If the relevant research information is not enough to convince you I would then challenge you to try and top a box of troll dolls I found hidden in a corner of the basement. At one time I considered lighting a match to what seems like an ever growing pile but was concerned about toxic emitions. I am now thinking that I have cases of door prizes for the next plant swap and who knows you may be the lucky winner of a box of limbless Barbie dolls with interesting hair cuts!!

Hold up on the thanks, folks :-) You Guys make the trip, I just plan and that's what I do so it's really not a huge thing. Fun, but not huge.

For those who have asked privately, Logee's in January is like walking into another world. Owned privately for more than 100 years, it is the result of the Logee and Martin families sincere love of all plants tropical, tender and different. Logees has been an outstanding member of the mail order plant world since the idea started and has opened its doors to plantspeople from around the world.

They have a website that is easily Googled. Don't want this thread to be considered in any way as a commercial, so won't post a link, but worth a look.

We are very lucky to have this gem close. I'm sure someone has pics from last January to tease you into giving it a try in 2007!

Here is a link to pics from last year's tour. Logees is a tropical paradise, and it is wonderful to see all that color and foliage when everything outside colored in gray, brown and white.
