I plan to order soon from Park's, and maybe T&M which I consider rather high-priced. Last year I ordered from Nichols and J.L. Hudson. I want to try growing some grasses and dahlias from seed for my new garden area. I also may order some tomato seeds from Tomato Grower's Supply this year. I did really large tomato trials the last 2 years and wasn't supposed to try new ones but probably will.:-P

Last year I tried to grow biennials Deerhorn Clarkia and Chinese Houses Collinsia heterophylla, and Clematis stans from seed but didn't get very good results so will have to try again this year. The Clem will need chilling.

I'm running out of room to plant trees so may do a few shrubs this year, or chop some trees to plant others.

I'm hoping to place seed orders with Nindethana Seeds, Wildseed Tasmania, New Zealand Tree Seeds, Chiltern Seeds, rarepalmseeds.com and Mesa Garden in the next couple of months. I'd like to place an order with Sandeman; we'll see if I can scrounge up the cash. I have never ordered from them.

I've saved seeds from a few of my Heronswood plants, some have been sown, a few surprised me by germinating already - makes for an interesting winter without a greenhouse:) Thank god for old tablecloths, plastic totes and accurate weather forecasts

When the holiday hustle slows down, like next week, I'll order from Chilterns and Plant World Devon - I've had good germination with several things from both.

No Burpee orders leaving from here...In fact, I think I've only ordered from them once and I'm ashamed to admit it was they year they first offered white marigolds. Does it help if I say my taste in plants is much more discriminating as I've matured?

Karen, I hope you are good with tiny seed. Do you do the winter-sowing method? Next week after grandkids are gone I will have to try starting Clematis. I have tried putting fine gravel on top of the soil to provide some non-drying environment for small seeds with some success.

Thanks for the replies, despite the hissing. It's fun to see who is ordering what. Besides my Raintree fruit tree order, I've only ordered from Thompson and Morgan, but as I said, they get the lion's share of my seed order.

I also ordered many, many other seeds that I'll spare you, though some interesting ones are variegated sunflower (I grew it last year and LOVED its white-splashed foliage), mixed red-hot pokers (Kniphofia)(as easy as marigolds from seed), plus variegated snapdragons, and monarda, scabiosa, some cosmos, several zonal geraniums (easy from seed, just start them early), the striped-bloom dahlia 'Fireworks mixed' (also as easy as marigolds from seed), and the upright-facing cover-story foxglove 'Candy Mountain', cerinthe (honeywort), cobea, achillea 'Summer berries' and several types of California poppies.

There was more of course, but that's all I can remember. The order was large, for seeds. Let's just say that I more than qualified for their black hyacinth which come free (in September 2007!) with seed orders over fifty dollars.

Next up: Select Seeds (as soon as the catalog arrives), McClure and Zimmerman (bulbs (spring, summer and autumn)), and probably roses from Wayside, and yes, some goofball annuals from Burpee, plus JL Hudson too of course.

I will have to look up Nindethantha Seeds and Wildseed Tasmania as I've not heard of them before. I love retail research, heh heh.

Keep the updates coming, both with ordering and starting, your seeds. I grow a ton of perennials and shrubs too, and I know some with limited tastes (lol) dismiss annuals, but I sure like them in moderation. Sometimes I get tired of maintaining/monitoring irises or peonies for 52 weeks a year for two weeks of blooms. I need to tuck in some cheap seeds of powerhouse annuals to get months and months of blooms.

Hi Hemnancy, yes I winter sow most of my seeds. The cyclamen though like to germinate at 60 degrees so I have those indoors in a cool room. What seeds are tiny? I haven't started the rest yet, I was waiting until after the hectic holidays to start my winter sowing. I have grown a lot of clematis from seed. Most like cold treatment before they will germinate. A lot of the hybrid types may take as long as 18 months so don't throw your pots away if you don't see germination this spring. Good luck with your seeds. Karen

Wildseed Tasmania and Nindethana offer Australian native plants. It takes some further research to narrow down what plants are worthy ornamentals, what stands a chance of being growable in our climate (at least through most winters), and how to grow them. But for me that's part of the fun.

I don't think I'll be ordering new seeds this year. I have a number of unplanted seeds on hand, but more than anything, my focus is on approximately 100 brugmansia seeds from 11 different hybridizations, which I'm about to start under fluorescent lights.

And I have to say (altho I'll withhold the hisssss), if there is something I want that can be found only at Burpee ..... I'll live without it!

I placed a huge order with T&M late last summer when they were having a half-price sale. (Lets just say I got free shipping). Then they threw in about half as many packets of free seeds. For flower seeds I'm probably set for life. Fortunately they package everything in airtight foil.
I do need to go through my supply of vegetable seeds and see what I'm out of. I generally order my veg. seeds from Territorial but last year's seeds produced a lot of "off-type" plants--things that didn't come close to resembling the variety they sold me. I may go back to ordering from Johnny's.

Fun to see the updates, so keep them coming. Patrick, are your brugmansia seeds from your own hybridizations, or purchased/traded, or...? I have GREAT luck with daturas, but my track record with brugmansias isn't great, and I've never tried brugs from seed.

Like Molly and the others, I tend to order my veggie seeds from Territorial, even though they're not as northwest focused as they used to be. I'm putting in a small potager type garden in back (put up posts for the picket fence last weekend, good rainy weather for conrete-setting) so I'll have a nice little order for them.

Select seeds came this week too, so I'm excitedly circling various items there too.

I am always so impressed with how quickly Territorial Seeds delivers my orders. It only took five business days to get my big pile-o-seeds. I'm excited. I'm going to start the zonal geraniums (Pelargoniums actually as you all know) pretty soon since it's fun to have sproutlings in the window and because I'll want them to get to a good size before putting them out. Oh, and that Euphorbia longifolia 'Amjilassa' is going in pots this weekend (indoors of course) too since it takes 60-90 days to germinate.

If you're ordering seeds, let us hear what/where/how/who.

Grant, most of my brugs were grown from cuttings. My collection is getting be a scary size, considering the potential size of brugs, but it's hard to resist new cultivars. Brugs take more food & water than daturas, but as long as they're happy, they grow fast & bloom like crazy; it's nothing to to see 70-80 blooms all open at the same time. The fragrance varies a lot (smelling like everything from baby powder to bubble gum), but some really produce a lot of it.

I hope to do some hybridizing this year, but the seeds I've just started all came from Seed Sprout Nursery in Florida. The owner is a member of the brug forum I moderate. She's been doing some great hybridizing work.

I thought that I had just somehow gotten some of my tomatoes, peppers, and eggplants mixed up when I planted out in last years garden but I was perplexed because I always start from seed, keep good records, map the garden, label the plants, etc. But after reading Molly's reference to "off type" results from Territorial I am sitting here wondering whether to send in my order. When I stop to think about it I'm pretty sure that that the ones that seemed to be mixed up were new orders in'06 not saved from the year before. I generally split my veggie order between Territorial and Nichols with a few from Pinetree (great for seeds which only keep 1 year as their packets are small and priced accordingly) and elsewhere.
Anyone else have any thoughts/observations about seeds received from Territorial last year? jwww

Just for fun I stopped at the Ravenna Gardens up in U Village this weekend (I took the bus since my neighborhood's side streets were totally snowed in this weekend). Renee's Garden seeds has packets of rose seeds. I thought it would be fun to give them a try.

It says they've been scarified and pre-treated for somewhat speedy germination (I've grown plenty of roses from my own seeds and always just plant them in autumn and wait until spring so they get variable temps/moisture that they need to sprout in spring (or muuuuuch later)), but this is the first time I've tried from purchased seed.

I thought it would be fun to give them a try. We'll see how they do, but I'm curious. It says they are small growing, small flowering types in various shades of pink with some white. Below is a nice link to the actual seed pack.

Jim, when you start seeds in greenhouse, do you set them under lamp? What month it will be sufficient amount of day light for not to use lamps in greenhouse?
