I am sure this not the appropriate place to post this but I am just learning how to do this. I thought some of you might enjoy this story.

Last summer DH and I spent a month at Port Aransas, Texas at a beach RV resort park. We had our 5th wheel parked right across from a large swimming pool.

One morning I got up before 6 (before sunrise) and went outside since DH was still sleeping. I was sitting outside drinking my coffee when what a sight I saw!

A large raccoon came from around behind the bath house and it went to the pool. It walked right into the area of the pool which had a gradual slope into it like a beach. It took a bath then went straight to one of the lounge chairs, got up on it and lay there drying himself and grooming for a long time. It was hysterical!!!

I ran into the trailer and got my camera so I could take pics. One of the park hosts was there cleaning the bath house so I waited for him to come out and showed the coon to him, as we stood watching it and laughing I heard DH coming out of the trailer so I told him to come over and see. I took pics of it sitting and laying in the lounge chair. He had a small audience of myself, DH, park host, and a couple who happened to be walking their dogs and stopped to watch him. It didn't bother him one bit! He just kept on grooming.

They called animal control and a trap was set for him but DH and I watched the next morning to see if he was caught. As DH and I stood talking to the animal control guy we all saw the coon coming from behind the bath house again that morning. And even with the three of us there he still went right to the pool. The animal control guy checked his trap and all the dog biscuits had been taken without tripping the trap. LOL. That was one smart old coon and I knew they were going to have trouble catching that one. They planned to take him over to one of the islands and release him but he seemed to like it fine just where he was.

I was to see him several more times in the early mornings taking his baths while we were there.

This is one of my most unusual wild life stories so just thought I would share it with all you nature lovers.

Great story! I've never seen a raccoon myself outside of a zoo setting (or dead on the side of the road).

You said you took pictures, right? Post them!

I can't believe you have not had racoon encounters...haha. We were feeding one watermelon at the lake last summer too. They are every where!
My dad used to have one....he kept it from a baby until it got mean and started biting him...lol..then he gave it away. It's name was Boo-Boo.

Not to get into a religious debate... because I'm not the most religious guy you'll ever meet. But, you raised the God issue..., and if I remember my Sunday school from 40 years ago there was a little biblical passage from Genesis that read like this: "And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth." I'd say subduing the weeds in my yard would fall under that category.

I remember writing a rant in 1998 when Paul's Glory was selected hosta of the year for 1999... to all and sundry... how in the heck could PG be hosta of the year when June is so obviously the better plant. Then Sagae got HOTY 2000 and I continued to be upset. The hosta growers finally caught up... June was HOTY in 2001. It didn't take long for June to race up to the top of the popularity poll... trading 1st and 2nd placed back and forth with Sagae. Interesting that with the many thousands of releases since, that those two "oldies" continue to be at the top of the popularity list. I've grown pretty much all the older members of the Halcyon family... so including the siblings and cousins, there is one... only one... that I've had no luck with... Silver Scrolls... dark green, thin white margin... should be as vigorous as Devon Green... just doesn't grow for me... like its permanently dwarfed. Quite the disappointment.

Jo, how true is that!!! after seeing this pic, I was talking about this with my parents. They said, they feel very fresh and energetic after a walk in the garden now and also back in village. You know my dad never been to hospital or taken any medicine so far! Their secret is not to worry about any thing just take it easy, laugh like a kids, enjoy gardening, mom said healthy looking plants makes her more happier and healthier. What a story and what a photo! I laughed out loud when I saw that raccoon on the lounge chair. They are very smart animals. We see coons on a fairly regular basis, but I've never seen one in a lounge chair! Sometimes they will knock or scratch at the door. (Do they really think I am going to open it or feed them???)

My cousin had a raccoon as a pet when we were young. They found it in their yard when it was quite small and decided to keep it. It had a decent sized cage, but I always felt sorry for it.....always thought it would probably rather be free. They released it ater it starting biting them too.

They are very smart animals. My son had a pet one also. I almost croaked when I learned his Dad had paid $50 for it and that OKC swap market thingy that had in OKC. It lived in a cage, but when it was out it would pile on the dog right along with her puppies and she paid no attention to it. The boys would open the door when that went to feed the horses and she would follow them to the barn. We lived near Lake Thunderbird and had a huge metal barn. She would climb up to the center beam and sit there watching from her perch, 30 or so feet up. When they finished, they called her and she came down and followed her back to the house and her cage. Smart animals.
